Trying to Shut Down a Karate School..and Getting Shut Down Yourself!

The Black Belt Who Tried to Shut Down Kang Duk Won Karate School

Speaking of Black Belts, I once met one who had actually walked into the Kang Duk Won and tried to shut that Karate School down.

I met him at the place I worked, a plastics factory in Sunnyvale, when I discovered that he knew Karate.

Kang Duk Won karate

The Man who couldn’t be shut down.

We talked, and he told me that he had been made a 3rd degree black belt because he could ‘fight so good.’

I know he knew one form, the horse stance form, but I don’t think he knew any others.

He claimed that he knew the Mu Duk Kwon, or the Oo Duk Kwon, or something like that. It’s been a long time, and we only talked about it briefly.

So he had a black belt, and he said that he and his teacher used to go to karate schools, sign up for a free, introductory class, and then pick a fight with the instructor and beat him up.

True.

He named several karate schools, one of which I knew had gone out of business.

Then he told me about the time he walked into the Kang Duk Won to get a free class and shut it down.

This interested me, because this was my school.

He and his teacher walked in, and were greeted politely. They talked for a few minutes, but the teacher, Bob Babich, didn’t say much, and his eyes started squinting, and he started staring at them.

That’s it, just getting intense. No warning, ‘no howdie do what art ya study,’ just…a look. A look that penetrated right through the two fellows.

The two fellows began to feel uneasy, then downright queasy.

This had never happened to them before, and suddenly, the teacher decided they should leave.

After hearing the story I decided to do some checking of my own, so I went to the top black belt, who had actually been described as present at the time of the confrontation. His name was Ron, and he described the incident, without prompting, exactly as the black belts had.

He said that Bob Babich (the owner of the karate school) had suddenly gotten real tight. Just looked at those two fellows so intently that even Ron wanted to back away. And he was just an onlooker, off to the side.

Now, interestingly, I always remembered that story, and years later I had my own karate school.

One day this fellow came in, walked up to my partner and started talking.

I saw it a mile away. I saw it in the way the guy was twisting himself for the punch. The way he was mentally setting himself. The way he was edging the conversation.

He fully intended to cold cock my partner.

I moved in from the side and took a position. When he punched I was going to hit him. And I could feel this manic glee, and I had a vision of this fellow flying through the wall and into the accounting office next door.

I was about to tap into my art big time.

He started to move, and I shifted.

He looked at me.

Back to my partner, he started to move, and I started to move.

And this happened a couple more times, and the guy gave it up.

I had split his intention, and destroyed his purpose, simply by understanding it, and moving into it.

Not as good as Bob, but it certainly stopped a fight and saved my partner.

Interesting people, these fake black belts, they think it is about fighting, when it is not about fighting at all.

Have you looked into studying the Kang Duk Won yourself? This is simply the best online Karate course in the world, filled with videos, rare books, and some pretty darn amazing instruction.

Using the Karate Stance to Build True Power in the Martial Arts!

Sinking and Screwing to Power Up Your Karate Stance

One of the main differences between art and sport in the arena of the Martial Arts, is the ability to sink and screw, such as in good Karate stance.

This difference, what I refer to as sink and screw in Karate Stances, is drastic. Oddly, almost nobody ever talks about it, or, if they do, they pass it off. Continue reading

The Truth About Martial Arts Belt Ranking

Martial Arts Belt Ranking Made Easy

Martial Arts Belt Ranking does tend to be a little…strange. There are so many colored belts, what does a black belt mean, what is a master, and so on. In this article i will tell you where belt ranks came from, and what they actually mean.

Martial Arts Belt Ranking came from Japan, where it was originally used in swimming classes.

Ed Parker had a good system of Belt Ranking in Kenpo Karate

//

//
Martial Arts like Karate and Judo picked up on them because it made it easier to arrange the karate class, or judo class, and teach it.

Before then people would join a martial arts school and there were junior students and senior students, and the point was to get your Teaching certificate.

Some people didn’t want to go that far, but the serious students did. After all, why do something half way? And, of course, a person who knew enough to teach would certain have sufficient self defense skills to protect himself.

In 1967 I joined a Kenpo Karate school, and the belt ranks were eight to Black Belt, and then eight after one had achieved Dan ranking, which is what a Black Belt is.

The colors were: white, orange, purple, blue, green, three stages of brown, and black. Black belts usually just put a tip, or a strip of white on the end of the belt for each advanced dan ranking.

Later, 1969, I jointed a classical school, and here was where I experienced martial arts belt ranking as it was meant to be. Sort of.

There were three belt ranks to Black Belt. These were white, green, and brown. But, to be honest, these had been subdivided into an eight and eight system.

The theory (one of the more predominant theories, I should say), was that one started as a white belt, like an unwritten piece of paper. Then one experienced the green of spring, became worn, like autumn, and finally entered winter.

This was an interesting sort of mythos. There was a logic to it, and it did describe the growing process, sort of.

But, what I noticed as the years rolled by was this: Martial Arts belt ranking doesn’t matter to people who have been in the martial arts for a while.

Yes, they are important, if only to spur the beginning student on. And, one should take pride in an achievement. It takes a lot of work, a lot of stick-to-ivity, to progress through the martial arts belt ranking systems.

But the real measure here is whether a person makes it to teacher.

Why do things half way, eh?

And that is the truth about Martial Arts belt ranking.

Here’s a great article on reality martial arts belt ranking. You can get started on Learning Martial Arts right here.

Beat Up a Karate Instructor for Fun, Profit, and World Peace!

Yes, You Can Beat Up a Karate Instructor!

A 37 year old man entered a Fort Wayne Karate school and tried to beat up a karate instructor.

The unnamed man carefully disguised himself before entering the martial arts school. He ripped up a batman tee shirt and arranged it about his face as a mask, then entered the school. A ‘Karate kid’ self defense class was being conducted, but that did not sway the alleged ‘beater upper.’ He strode to the center of the mat, apparently to give a message of world peace.

Are you a socially acclimated, politically correct slave? Or do you study Martial Arts?

The owner of Bowles Karate Academy politely asked the belligerent to leave, but the man refused. Instead, he held out a hand with a secret message on it. The owner refused to take the note, and instead elected to guide the man off the mat and out of the school. The man immediately swung a gnarly fist and punched the sensei in the face.

Big mistake.

The instructor quickly subdued the man. It was not stated whether the karate instructor used a simple jointlock, threw the man down and sat on him, or kicked him in the, uh…juncture at the top of and between the legs.

At any rate, the man was subdued, and the sensei and one of his assistants held the man in place while the police were called. It is unknown whether the martial artssensei lectured the children on proper jointlocks, holds, and submission techniques while he perched aboard the intruder.

The police shortly arrived, and the man was passed over to them to be handcuffed. When the police asked the man why he had come into the school, the man passed them the secret message. The note said, ‘Stop the Violence.’

The police began laughing, then everybody in the school was laughing, and the attacker hung his head in shame.

The man was arrested on misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal trespass.

The teacher was cheered, and so goes the attempt to beat up a karate instructor.

How to Rob a Karate School!

If there was ever a proof that drugs make one stupid, a man in Bucaramanga, Columbia attempted to rob a Karate School.

Check out the video, then I’ll tell you about the ‘Karate robber.’

Apparently the man entered the martial arts school with a gun and demanded money. Dozens of students looked at each other, probably a little confused at their training being interrupted. But, within split seconds, the looks of confusion were no doubt replaced by broad grins.

Chops, punches and takedowns. Once the pistol was out of the man’s hands, it is no doubt that the karate students took turns  practicing their disarms and striking techniques, letting the man up only so that another student could take a turn. Within a short time the man was whimpering and crying for mercy.

The police finally arrived at the self defense extravaganze, much to the robber’s relief. They toted the man to the local hospital where he was treated for bruises. Lots of bruises. His whole body was a bruise. Grin.

I lost A Karate School to Sex

I lost one Karate School to Sex. Mind you, I had had schools in a number of places, usually they did pretty well, and i loved teaching, so I was sort of stunned when one self destructed.

This was up in Santa Rosa in the eighties. I had a dozen students, things were growing, and suddenly, within the space of a month, I had nothing.

A couple of months later I happened across one of my errant students and got the story.

There was a fellow who was using the school as a dating service. He moved from female student to female student, dated them, dumped them, and the girls didn’t want to come to class anymore.

And, this cancer seemed to infect even the male students. I guess they just felt the down curve of the whole thing and left. And, the source of his prey destroyed, the sex fiend moved on. And I hadn’t even a clue as to what had happened. Grrr.

I am reminded of the Zen parable wherein an attractive nun keeps getting notes from a secret admirer asking her to meet him some dark night. She stands up in front of the nuns and monks and reads the note aloud, then asks whoever wrote the note to come embrace her in daylight.

Secrets. Secrets of the soul.

Why is something a secret? Because somebody is hiding something they should be ashamed of.

Have you ever considered the root of the word Hell? It means something that is hidden. Have a nasty secret and you are opening the door to hell, and right here on good old planet earth.

I am more aware these days, and I make it public and certain knowledge that if you’ve signed up in my karate school, then you’re there to learn martial arts. I don’t run a dating club, and anybody who disagrees is quickly and without hesitation shown the door.

I teach more than just Karate at Monster Martial Arts.
