Hey,
one of the biggest,
most frequent questions I get,
when I’m teaching,
is where do you look
when you are free styling.

OR,
and this is really bad,
I get kids who freestyle
while unconscious.

Would you like to fight while unconscious?

Let me explain.
If you were in the middle of a street
and a car came barreling towards you,
would you look at the car?
Or would you look at the driver?

Kids and beginners always say,
‘I’d look at the car.’
I make the noise of somebody being smunched,
run over by a car.
Crunched.

Here’s the thing,
the car has no mind.
It is a piece of metal and machinery.
The car has no direction,
except that which is fed into it by the driver.
So you look at the driver.
You look at the person behind the wheel,
you read his intentions.

Read his intentions.
A car has no intention.
Only a human being has intention.

So you must look at the driver of the car.

AND,
that means,
when you are fighting,
you must look at the eyes.

The eyes are the windows to a man’s soul.

Look at the eyes,
and you can see the intention.
You can see the thoughts.
You can see the intention.

Not at first.
At first you see eyes.
You see flesh and tissue.
But,
with practice,
with dedicated dedication,
you will,
at last,
see the thought behind the body.
The spirit behind the flesh.
The ‘I am’ directing the action.

I know,
I’ve heard all the theories,
even been told to do them,
and even believed them for a while.
Look at the chest.
Use peripheral vision.
See the whole body by unfocusing.
But you’re still looking at the vehicle,
and not seeing who’s driving.

Oh,
eventually,
even without eyes,
you’ll start to perceive
things happening,
but it will be slow and faulty.

Who do you think is looking through those eyes?

Here’s the funny thing,
I was teaching a kid the other day,
and I made him look at me,
really look at me,
the ‘I am,’
and not the body,
and he broke down.
Went into the giggling hysterics.
Couldn’t look at me.

When I was a child and in trouble,
parents lecturing me,
I’d look down,
and immediately got the:
‘Look at me when I’m talking to you!’
They didn’t want me going unconscious.
I had to stay there and take my punishment.
Funny thing,
after a little of that,
I didn’t want to get in trouble.
It was just too hard looking them in the eyes.

So that’s the key,
it will help your martial arts tremendously,
it will help your matrixing fantastically.
Because,
here’s something simple,
if you can’t look at it,
you can’t fight it.
And that means you can’t fight.

Why?
Because if you’re not looking,
then you’re unconscious.

An Overview of Matrixing in the Martial Arts

The Truth about Matrixing

maybe a little blood,

so let me sum up Matrixing.
Let them know what they got them selves into.
Incidentally,
what I am about to tell you
I wrote in a letter to a fellow.
His question was that he wasn’t sure what he was getting,
he was studying,
but matrixing didn’t always make sense.
So I thought he needed an overview.
And here it is for you.

Before we get into it,
however,
I have a special deal

here is the answer I wrote
concerning an overview of matrixing.

Hi Michael, glad you are having fun with the matrixing…probably an overview would help you out at this point.

The one sticking point for most people is that they have a hard time viewing the body as a machine. This is because if the body is a machine, then what are they? And the answer: they are awareness, a point in space ‘giving off’ light. Or ‘shedding awareness.’

This point, of being a point of awareness, is actually the subject of neutronics. I’ll attach a booklet (prologue) for you to better understand that subject.

The second thing to remember, in this overview, is the example I give of Eddie Rickenbacker (pg 102 of Matrixing: The Master Text).

Eddie visualized his plane on a line through space, and he had to handle incoming forces, so he visualized himself as a center of a sphere, and then came up with solutions for every angle of attack into that sphere.

Doing this for the body (the machine that you occupy, or ‘drive’) you come up with the rules of operation for the body. There are five specific rules for operating the body efficiently. These are:

Breath, relax, sink downward, align the body, coordinate the body in motion

After these five rules for maximizing potential of personal motion of the body, which are applied through the practice of form, you get into analyzing the forces and flows (directions) of incoming ‘objects’ (fists, feet, etc.). This is where you begin to construct matrixes of blocks, matrixes of ranges, and so on.

And this is where you construct specific theories of art. Karate as a defense, or Aikido, or tai chi, and so on. Each art describes a specific range, or angle of motion, and is defined by a specific concept or concepts.

Okay, so that is the overview. But, don’t worry if matrixing doesn’t ‘burst inside your head.’ Some people, a very few people, get a blast of enlightenment, everything makes sense, they see the whole picture, etc. But most people just have to compile the art, piece by piece, and settle for becoming more and more competent, until they just know everything.

There are times when I have had ‘mystical insight,’ where everything was like a message from God, a vision, and I understood everything. That was because I had accumulated enough data, and it suddenly, in a moment, made sense.

But other times I would just work and work for a few years, would experience no enlightenment, but found that I had developed superior abilities in various areas.

In Karate I had a moment of profound vision, the world turned gold, and I understood. But in Pa Kua I never experienced that, but did find, after a few years of walking the circle, that my legs were like oaks, yet filled with a lightening like energy.

So don’t worry if things don’t suddenly open up for you, just keep going, settle for the slow but sure knowledge of abilities gained over time. Just realize that you keep accumulating data, until you have the knowledge, until there are no more questions.

Think of where you were before you started the martial arts, and where you are now, and realize that some day you will be looking back to where you are now, and be somewhere very, very advanced compared to now.

Just remember, the martial arts are a BIG field. But the concepts are simple. And the process is actually one of simply gathering and arranging data until everything makes sense and there isn’t any more mystery; it is a process of isolating the simplicities and then applying them to the larger field of chaos that is the accumulated martial arts.

Four Steps to Winning a Karate Fight

Four Simple Martial Arts Fighting Steps

To be victorious in a fight it is necessary to make the decision to win the fight. Without that decision, simply, there is no way you are going to win. Thus, you have to practice making the decision, and then implement a plan so that the decision becomes reality.

kenpo fighting bookThere are five decisions you must make to back up the decision to win a fight. This combat strategy is found in every fight. This is the strategy you must understand and master if you are going to be able to deliver the original decision.

The first decision, and the most important, is that there is going to be a fight. Interestingly, you don’t have to get in a fight if you refuse to make the decision to be in a fight. Even if the other person has made a decision, unless you agree with his decision, you don’t have to fight.

The second decision involves distances involved in the fight. You should understand , at this point, that a fight is going to collapse in distance. And, you must understand that if you can control this distance, and even change collapsation into expansion at will, you can control and win a fight.

The third decision has to do with which side of the bodies the fight is going to occur on. One out of eight people being left handed, a fight will usually occur with right hand, and the bodies will turn to fit the hands, and the fight will be on that side. If you can control that decision, as to which side the fight will be on, then you are going to win that fight.

The fourth decision is going to be whether you are on the inside or the outside. What this means is that if he punches with a right hand, you must block/push/whatever so that his right hand misses you on the outside, and you see the inside of his wrist. And, if he punches with the right, you must block/push/whatever so that his right hand misses you on the inside, and you see the outside of his wrist.

There are other decisions in a fight, there can be millions of decisions, literally. Do you wish the fight to be conducted at a specific distance, such as foot, or fist, or elbow, or whatever. Or, do you wish to control the decisions so that the fight collapses or expands in distance as you wish, from foot to elbow to knee to throw to fist to foot to whatever, your choice, and so on.

The point, however, is that to control all the other decisions, you must control the first four decisions. If you can understand and create drills to back up these decisions, then you can win any fight. Of course, as I said in the beginning, the first decision, that you are going to win that fight, is the most important.

There is No First Strike in Karate

Hitting First in Karate

There is no first strike in Karate is an old saying. It s also, as plain as it seems, very misunderstood. To explain it people always say things like, ‘you have to let the other guy strike first,’ or, ‘we believe in non-aggressive behavior,’ or something like that. So here is the truth about ‘there is no first strike in Karate.’

Let’s say you’re driving your car home from work every day, and you learn what the community driving patterns are. There’s always a traffic jam at the Main Street light. Kids let out of school late onThursday on 4th street. If you turn left at Town street it is one way with almost no lights.

In other words, you learn to ‘know’ what the driving patterns are in your town, and you adjust your driving to take advantage of those patterns. In the martial arts, such as Karate, or for that matter, Taekwondo or Aikido or whatever, the same holds true.

You face enough students you learn that a shoulder dip presages a kick; a blink is an attempt to hide an attack; a subtle breathing inwards is a prep for a rushing attack. In other words, you learn to ‘know’ what your opponent is going to do.

The beginner, of course, doesn’t know anything. But he faces enough people, pays attention long enough, and these fighting patterns become obvious, and he learns to ‘know’ his opponent.

There are many things that can get in the way of learning to know your opponent. If you let emotion cloud your perceptions then you can’t see clearly enough to ‘know’ your opponent. If you study a system that believes in fighting, instead of developing awareness, you won’t ‘know’ your opponent. If you practice a system that preaches things like ‘adrenaline dumping,’ then you won’t learn to ‘know’ your opponent.

Things like emotion, the joy of combat, using adrenaline in your strategy and practice, these things all interfere with looking at what is happening, and being able to learn to know your opponent.

You see to know somebody you have to look at them, and the looking must not be distracted, and that means cultivating a stillness within, a stillness without such things as emotion or other errant thoughts or occurrences in the awareness.

If you learn how to achieve stillness within, which is to say if you learn to pay attention without being distracted, by emotion, by other things, then you look, and you learn to know.

Now, let me ask you a question: if you can look at your opponent, and if you ‘know’ that he is going to attack, would you striking first really be a first strike?

I hope you see the obviousness of the answer. But if you don’t, then simply continue with your practice. Look at your opponent, learn how to recognize, and to act, upon the twitches, the broken breathing pattern, the dip of the shoulder or the turn of the hip, and you will learn how to know your opponent, and then there will be no first strike in Karate.

A New Way of Fighting with Martial Arts!

There are many modes of freestyle,

and I want to tell you about one,

 it’s one of my favorites,

and I use it when I want to make a point,

make a student think,

or just to end the contest

in a way that is so unspectacular

that it is spectacular

and everybody goes  ‘ooh!’

It is simply so short and sweet,

so quick,

so concept oriented.

First,

there are only four blocks.

The back of the wrist horizontal.

The palm horizontal.

The back of the wrist vertical.

The palm vertical.

I’ll leave it to you

and a little practice

as to how to use these blocks.

Now,

the strike is a simple vertical punch.

You start it with the hand held open

 in front of the body

fingers pointed towards your opponent.

you simply block,

then punch.

That’s it.

A little practice,

and you would be shocked

at how well this works.

And,

it works in freestyle.

Now,

there is more to it.

I figured this out

from doing Pan Gai Noon.

That’s one of the three complete arts

offered on

Evolution of an Art.

I did Pan Gai Noon,

analyzed the blocks and figured how the matrix of the art,

and saw what was possible.

But,

in doing the Pan Gai Noon,

I learned how to drop my weight

fix myself to the ground

without appreciable change in stance.

The most I do is point the feet in,

sink an inch,

and that’s it.

And,

I learned different things about

the tightness of the fist.

I had been doing the finger touching close the fist punch thing

for a long time.

Now i had to do it out of palm blocks and back wrists.

Most of all,

I learned different things about timing.

See, here’s the thing,

every art has different modes of timing

you have to figure out what each mode is,

and,

you do enough modes,

you enter mushin no shin.

Cool, eh?

never thought it would be so simple.

But it makes sense.

Mushin no shin means mind of no mind.

But the mind is memory,

memory is time.

And that’s why I frequently refer to mushin no shin

as ‘Time of no time.’

Do without the memotyr,

and you are doing without time

and pereceiving things directly

as awareness

as they are happening

with no memory filters.

Now,

here is the kicker.

It takes time to accumulate enough techniques,

enough arts,

especially if they are going to have

different modes of timing.

So you matrix.

you pick up karate.

You pick up kung fu and blinding steel,

whatever you happen to like,

the timing modes are different

so mushin no shin happens faster.

The courses are logical,

easier to do,

faster to make intuitive,

faster to know.

So somewhere in there,

sooner than later,

you’re going to mushin no shin.

These guys with LOTS of experience,

all they have to do

is read the data,

they already have the arts.

The arts get made logical,

everything makes sense,

and

zingo bingo,

they are there.

New guys have to start from the beginning.

And,

the terrible misfortune with new guys,

they don’t have the platform of experience

to understand what I am saying,

so they read about

instead of do.

Old guys have already done.

New guys tie into the old ways,

but that’s okay,

I’ll see them in twenty years,

and we’ll make sense of their arts then.

Too bad.

They could have done it in a year or two.

Instead…twenty years.

But,

what you gonna do, eh?

Anyway,

that’s about it.

I’m not really pushing mushin no shin this week,

that just sort of snuck in there,

popped out while I wasn’t looking.

I was more interested

in people accumulating more arts.

Controlling Martial Arts Freestyle with Neutronics

When it comes to martial arts freestyle, and we are talking karate kumite, kung fu sparing, or whatever, there is simple scientific formula. Here is where the control of the fight starts…

While there is an art to destruction,

the true art is in control.

The idea here is that everybody tries to engage rage, meet with heat, build themselves to a frothy pitch and do mindless batle.

But if you want to learn real freestyle, as opposed to just animalistic rage, you need to learn how to control the fight. The problem, while there is much talk about ‘controlling a fight,’ nobody really tells you the real facts on how to do this. Neutronics provides the real strategy and philosophy behind martial arts freestyle.

One of the main theories of neutronics is that everything in the universe is a motor. A motor is defined as two poles between which there is tension (push/pull). To control freestyle you need merely control the distance between the poles.

If the poles collapse in distance, the motor is in danger of self destruction.

If the poles increase in distance, there may be no fight…but that doesn’t resolve the fact of a motor bent on destruction; it doesn’t solve the animosity between combatants.

So, you control the distance so that it stays the same at all times, neither collapsing nor growing greater.

When he attacks, you retreat, when he retreats, you attack. The trick is to choose the correct distance, which means choosing the distance at which you are stronger, and he is weaker.

It is easy to establish the correct distance, just move in and out and see which weapon your opponent prefers. Feet? Knees? Fists? Do this with a few opponents, and you will soon grow to recognize what distance any opponent prefers and sets up for.

Now, one crucial goal to reach when you practice neutronics in this fashion. Search for the distance at which harmony occurs. This is the distance at which you can defeat an attack using the flow of the attack. Not the hard levers of ju jitsu, or a specific range of strikes, but a flowing range.

Karate Kumite…Emotion And Mad Dog Survival

Karate Kumite and Clint Eastwood, I never thought I’d say those two things in a sentence. In the movie ‘The Outlaw Josie Wales,’ Clint lectures some sissy pioneers about how to get mad dog mean when you’re fighting for survival. There is truth in his statement, but there is, especially if you are involved in classical martial arts training, a lie.

martial artsThe truth is that you have to raise up your desire to survive. You have to be willing to do more than you have ever done before. You have to be willing to fight harder and never give up.

The lie is that emotion increases your desire to win. To understand this, and other things concerning emotion and the martial arts, we have to define what, exactly, emotion is. The odd thing is that if you look in a dictionary you will not find a good definition.

Emotion isn’t ‘mood,’ or an ‘instinctive state of mind,’ except in the vaguest of terms. When somebody is unable to accept reality he/she creates a mental turmoil that is labeled emotion. That’s a good definition, and I know because I made it up myself, but we have to look deeper if we are really going to understand emotion and how to use it.

The Neutronic way of defining emotion is: ‘Motion inside the mind.’ You feel rage, and in your mind you want to make motion towards somebody (hit them in the face with a baseball bat). But it is all in your mind, and it is not really real.

When you punch somebody, would you put energy into your knee? That would be a waste of energy, right? What you want to strive for, as a martial artist, is to put energy only into the fist.

When you direct energy into body parts other than the one(s) being used you are not being efficient in your motions. This same idea holds true in the subject of emotion. Energy put into emotion is not energy put into the desire to win; to win it is best if we get mad dog cool and determined, not extra angry.

Emotion is not to be discouraged, for emotion is something we can use to read others, vent our feelings, experience love, and that sort of thing. However, emotion in a fight can stultify a person’s desire to fight. When it comes to Karate Kumite , or any other type of classical martial arts freestyle, you must increase your desire to win without falling into emotion, or trying to use emotion in any way.
