What Really Happens When You Hit Somebody

That’s almost 700 times
I’ve told you to workout!
Well,
it’s an advice
that is worth the repetition.

Okay, I was reading a collection of sic fi shorts one day,
this was when I was a teenager,
long time ago,
and one story really hit me.

A space ranger has followed a criminal
to a small planet.
There’s nothing on the planet,
more like a large asteroid,
just all bare,
with a couple of boulders here and there.

So the space ranger and the criminal
they get in this gun fight.
And they are shooting away,
and suddenly,
a bullet hits the rock
right next to the ranger.

He spins around,
thinks somebody is behind him.
But there’s nobody,
and then he realizes what has happened.

He shot at the criminal, and missed,
and the bullet went all the way around the planet,
and almost hit him.

The gravity of the planet is just enough,
that bullets don’t fall,
they go into orbit at three feet off the ground,
and they take three or four seconds
to go around the whole planet.

Now,
he’s got one bullet left,
and the criminal knows it,
so he tries a desperate gamble.
He lines up the boulders
he and the criminal are hiding behind,
and shoots directly away from the criminal,
not towards the criminal,
but directly away.

The criminal hears the last shot,
it doesn’t come anywhere near him
and he jumps to his feet to charge,
and the bullet hits him right smack square in the back.
It had traveled around the planet.

Now,
what does this fantastic tale
have to do with the martial arts?

Well,
I realized,
as soon as I read that story,
what it meant.
It meant that if you do something bad,
it will travel all the way around the universe,
and hit you right in the middle of the back.

Karma,
baby.
Payback.
What goes around comes around.
literally.

The thing is this:
You create your life.
If you treat people meanly,
then you will be treated meanly.
If you treat people fairly,
guaranteed,
people will treat you fairly.

Those guys who worked in concentration camps?
They may not know why their lives suck,
this lifetime,
but it is their own doing.

And that guy who lives fat and sassy?
He treats people fairly,
makes sure he pays his workers enough.

Want to know something funny?
I knew this girl who ran a big company.
and the company was a big, fat, rich success.
And I asked her daughter once,
what her mother’s biggest problem
in running this company.

You’d think it would be people who quit,
arguments in the mail room,
a fight or affair,
or something like that.

Nope.
Her biggest problem was remembering when birthdays were.
She was always checking her books,
making sure she didn’t forget a birthday,
a chance to send flowers,
a walk down to shipping and a pat on the back
for a job well done…
and what could she do for her worker?

Do you see how it works?
And it starts with the martial arts.
You learn to fight,
and start choosing not to fight,
and you become aware of compassion,
and the chance to treat people right.

And what’s the alternative?
Being mean.
Treating people badly,
and then wondering why you are always having problems,
man,
its almost like somebody was shooting you in the back.

Don’t turn around, man.
Just look in a mirror.

How to Hit Harder in the Martial Arts!

I had an interesting question today
this from a person who didn’t study the martial arts
He asked me
“How do you break those bricks and boards
and not end up with arthritis
in your hands?”

Good question, eh?
The reason
I told him
is that it is not how hard you hit,
it is hitting gently
and letting the power accumulate
over the years.

I remember my brother
back when Karate first hit the news,
punching a telephone pole
to make his hands tough.
He ended up with bruised and bleeding knuckles
that hurt for months.
And,
sorry to say,
there are schools of martial arts
that do that type of training
to this day.
They believe in
‘no pain no gain,’
which is one of the worst sayings ever.

Look,
pain is a warning,
a signal that you are in danger
that you might get hurt.
You don’t ignore pain.
You learn to edge it,
to use it,
but you never deliberately hurt yourself.
That’s like printing
‘stupid’
on your forehead.

But,
you put up a makiwara,
you tack some rug pads to a tree,
you hang a heavy bag,
and you hit it not hard,
but softly,
gently,
just hard enough to feel it.
Then you don’t bruise your knuckles,
you make your whole arm strong
working out day after day.

You don’t change your body…
you change the way you think about the universe.

And,
that leads us to the second part of this thing.
There are three depths for striking.
Skin deep,
muscle deep,
bone deep.

To hit the skin never causes a bruise.
It pulls the punch,
and you can strike as hard as you want
nobody gets hurt.

BUT…your punches don’t develop real power.

So you punch a little harder, to the muscle.
This can cause a bruise,
so you have to learn how to tighten your muscles,
or,
how to hit just barely hard enough
to rock the muscle
but not bruise it.

This needs a high degree of control,
but you know what I say,

there is an art to destruction,
but the true art is in control.

Now,
the third depth of striking
is to strike to the bone.
This causes bruises every time,
and puts the bones at risk.
You can,
with a little practice
break bones pretty easily.

This depth of striking
takes a lot of awareness,
not a lot of mindless bashing,
but a lot of concentration
and focus,
and awareness of what,
exactly,
you are hitting.

There’s a great book,
‘Iron and Silk’
by Mark Saltzman.
Got made into a movie.
Guy goes to China and learns Kung Fu.
Well,
the guy who taught him
was famous,
was in movies,
and one of his training regimens was
to strike a piece of metal 2000 times a day.
He would just walk around
holding a little plate of metal,
and punch it.

When they shot the movie
they asked him to hit the plate,
and he did,
and the sound of his knuckles striking metal
made everybody sick.
They had to dub in the sound.

Now,
that is a punch
developed over time.
When you see the movie you realize
he is not hitting the plate hard,
just doing it
over and over and over,
and,
a couple of decades,
and the mere sound of that punch,
makes people sick.

Now,
go read the book,
rent the movie,
really fascinating stuff.

Okay,
so are you working out a lot?
Do you have a sheet of paper hanging on your bedroom door,
so you can see it every day?
Or taped to the mirror in your bathroom,
reminding you to work out?

Think about this punching thing,
about the three levels of striking,
and where you want to be in your martial arts.
Not tomorrow,
but in a couple of decades.

Go on,
make a plan,
stick to it,
and answer the question that guy asked me.

The Evolution from Martial to Art

How the Martial Arts Change…

Man, end of the week coming up,
getting ready,
did two work outs yesterday,
Felt S-O-O-O good.
And it’s just from working out.

Now,
here’s how it happens.
Somebody learns how to kill somebody.
This is using his bare hands.
Maybe it is to fight against bandits,
or as part of a military mission,
or whatever.
Then,
he practices,
and he lives,
maybe he survives,
and maybe he teaches.

Interested in the killing ways,
this fellow keeps his eyes open,
learns all manner of techniques,
and he practices.
And practices and practices.
Eventually,
he accumulates enough data
to realize a truth about himself.
By accumulating pieces of art,
he puts the arts together,
and
in the process
puts himself together.
At this point the killing techniques
become an art.
A matter of self expression.
Enlightenment.

As this fellow passes his art down,
maybe to his sons,
maybe to paying students,
whatever,
the things he learned and taught
become quite methodical
and more and more people
realize the things he did.

His system becomes a CCS
a Closed Combat System.

It has sufficient breadth and depth,
to always work
if people do it as prescribed.

It is a matter of evolution.
It is a matter of generation after generation
honing the material,
figuring out more and more things
to make that system work.

And,
it is a matter of students
not changing the system,
except in ways that bolster the system.

The few students who don’t complete the art,
or leave with improper understanding,
end up without a complete system,
and they are at risk of adding things to that system
that don’t belong.

That brings us to the modern age.
And students who hoped on a plane in Japan as green belts,
and got off the plane in America
as black belts.

That brings us to students who quit their system
and
because they didn’t have enough to teach,
started adding things indiscriminately.

That brings us to people who destroyed
the evolutionary accumulation
that is what we call a Closed Combat System.

That brings us to an age
where there are so many systems,
the glut of information is so much,
and well meaning instructors try to include everything,
swelling their systems
without regard for how everything fits together.

Go on,
learn Aikido,
then introduce a front punch in the middle of every technique.
There goes the concept of harmony.
There goes Aikido,
no longer a CCS.

Or,
how about taking a system of jujitsu,
and altering every technique for tournament play.
There goes jujitsu.

Or,
or…or…or…
There are actually very few Closed Combat Systems left.
There are actually very few teachers
who understand what has been done to their art.

Think of it like software.
You are learning algebra through a software program,
then,
7th lesson,
you are handed all sorts of material
having to do with growing watermelons.

Man,
would you shake your head or what?

You might obsess on watermelons,
or you might give up algebra,
or you might start teaching people
the necessary algebra
that you just made up
to grow watermelons.

Weird, eh?

Here’s the thing.
There is martial,
which is war,
which is how to kill somebody.

Then,
if a person learns enough,
if he learns enough stuff
so that the whole thing makes sense,
then it becomes an art.

If you know a single art,
you only know one viewpoint,
and you have little chance of learning the whole.

If you learn an art that is corrupted,
bereft of unified concepts,
then you will degrade the art to martial.
You will go from learning to express yourself as a human being
and devolve to espousing tricks to kill people.

So what is the value of being a human being?
Well,
if you are learning tricks to kill,
then you don’t know,
and all I can say is…
learning to express yourself
is higher on the evolutionary chain
than killing people.

Don’t Take a Gun to a Martial Arts Fight!

Gunfighters Take Second Place to Martial Arts Fighter!

I get all sorts of emags, having to do with martial arts, of course, and prepping, and that includes a lot of knife and gun mags.

Hey, guns ARE (regardless of what I am about to say) Martial Arts weapons.

But, the point I read in the latest emag I received was that most people, during frantic panic, will miss the target if that target is over 10 or 12 feet away.

gunfighters and martial artistsNow, jump up and run across the room as fast as you can. That’s the distance you have to worry about in a gunfight, and you covered it in a second and a half, and now the weapon is somewhat negated and you are into the down and dirty, close combat, kill with your bare hands before he kills you!

Now, don’t go crazy on me, I know there are all sorts of what ifs right here, but this scenario does have enough truth to it that it should be considered. And, considered, I come up with one definite truth: a person, regardless of all factors, needs fast reactions, strength, and a mad ‘alpha’ dog attitude towards life and fighting.

Here’s the sad truth, most guys who preach guns do not spend time on the mat, do not hone their reflexes and reactions so they are razor sharp, are not in the best shape of their lives.

They will lose hand to hand.

But, they believe in guns.

And, before anybody goes mad ‘alpha’ dog on me, my compliments to you if you have seen to your physical shape and shoot guns.

But I see too many fellows at the gun shows who have large bellies and start wheezing if they have to do more than turn a wrench.

So, there is a basic unfairness here, it seems like I am attacking gunsters, and just because I love martial arts, but the truth is that I just believe that if you are going to hold a hunk of metal that is going to pop out a life ending punch with the twitch of a trigger finger, you should also make sure that you have your muscles lean and mean.

So ease up on the beer and pretzels, head down to the Karate dojo or the Taekwondo dojang.

Get a course on the internet for tai chi chuan, if you are in really bad shape. Or just start doing some squats and push ups, even if you need to hold on to something or do them from your knees. Heck, go take a darned Yoga class if you have to!

The point here is that guns are great, but you need fast reactions, if you are going to use them efficiently, and you need to be in good shape for that.

How to Find a Martial Arts Pressure Point

Martial Arts Pressure Points

Good goldurn morning!
Or evening,
or whenever it is!
But you know that whenever it is…
all you have to do is work out.
Work out,
and the mysteries of the universe
unfold before you.
Mysteries,
such as…
pressure points.

in it was a question about pressure points,
and I get this question every once in a while,
when am I going to do a book/course on pressure points.

Heck,
why write a whole book
when I can explain pressure points right here?

To understand pressure points
think electricity.

Points are like wall sockets,
for instance,
there is a pressure point
on the elbow.
It is called the funny bone,
but it’s not a bone,
its just where the nerves pass close to the surface,
and you can strike that point,
or grip it,
and cause some pain.

Then there are nerve clusters,
like switchboards.
For instance,
there is a cluster of nerves right near the armpit.
Stick a finger in there,
and you cause a severe reaction.

Now,
we could get into energy,
electricity is an analogy for electricity,
and where the lines of energy run,
and which way they go,
and so on and so on.

But you don’t need all that stuff.
And,
if you think about energy the way I am describing it here,
and what I am going to tell you to do,
then you will learn about pressure points faster
and with better result
than if you spent twenty years
examining how the meridians effect the kidney
if you strike the second toe
of your left foot
twice at midnight.

You must learn to look with your hands.

I spent about three years at the Kang Duk Won,
and during that time I hit people,
and I got hit.
Nice,
perfectly controlled strikes.
A few bruises,
a cut lip or a mouse,
but,
generally speaking,
we were practicing pretty darned fine control.
And,
we were learning to look through our fists.

Listen,
if somebody gave you a box
and asked what was in it,
you might shake it.
You could tell if what is inside is hard or soft,
liquid or solid,
and,
if you shook it long enough,
swear to god,
you could probably tell the color
of whatever is inside the box.

I know,
sounds weird.

But I kept hitting people,
and,
like most,
I could tell when I was hitting bones or muscle,
soft tissue or hard,
and I could gauge the reaction of people to these strikes.
And I could tell by my reaction
when people struck me
what was inside the body.

It’s like radar.
consider this analogy…
You come up to a house and knock on the door,
you listen.
You can hear the echo of your knock
resounding through the house.
Now,
knock so that you get the best echo,
you get that really hollow pitch
that reaches all-l-l-l the way
through the house.
Now,
knock on your partner’s chest.
Listen.
Listen to the reverberations.

Listen to the changes as you knock
on different parts of the body.
What does it sound like
listen to your fist
when you knock on a bone?
What do the lungs sound like?
Heck,
it’s like a doctor’s stethoscope,
except that you are using your own enhanced senses.
And you can tell what is in the other person’s body.

Now,
it is just a quick jump to pressure points.
Take a look at this…

I am working a pressure point.
Now I don’t know where this point came from.
I’ve never studied pressure points,
but I find that I can feel the body
and the points are ALL over the place.
Almost anywhere you touch the body
you can cause a reaction.

So let me explain something.
I just touch the body,
using the ‘listening’ I learned to do with the fist.
I listen with my fingertips,
extend my senses inside his body,
touch with authority,
and,
zingo bingo
we have a pressure point.

Is it a real pressure point?
I don’t know.
Doesn’t matter.
All that matters is this…
practice your techniques and listen with your fists.
Feel the effects as you strike your partner.
Be gentle,
for you can hear more if you are gentle
than if you are distracting yourself with a loud yell
or a huge force of radiating energy.

It’s a matter of focused awareness,
that is all…and nothing more.

But how do you focus your awareness?
Through control.
Through learning control.

and,
sorry to say,
sorry if i step on toes here,
but not through boxing or MMA,
for the purpose in those sports
is to smash and destroy.

Look,
I love to watch MMA,
and there are instances of high control in some of those games
but they are the gladiatorial games of Rome
brought to modern times,
and they don’t teach pressure points
or how to increase your awareness.

Only the classical martial arts teach that,
and those only rarely,
because most of the stuff taught today
is not aligned.
Doesn’t make sense.
Are random sequences of techniques,
and not a step by step journey
to increased awareness.

And with increased awareness
comes a knowledge of pressure points.

So my advice
to anybody who wants to learn pressure points
is this.

Work out.
Do the classical.
Align the classical with matrixing,
so that you actually understand what you are doing
and are on a step by step procedure to awareness.

Do your forms and techniques,
do them with sincerity,
do them with lots of energy,
and do them silently,
learn to listen with your fists.

Do that
and you need no further instruction.
The secret isn’t a secret,
it is just a matter of your learning to focus awareness
in a rather unique manner.

you start your matrixing journey on,
all that matters is that you start,
and that you persist,
and that you learn to focus

The Size of the Bullet…the Size of…the Fist?

ANSWERING QUESTIONS OF FORCE IN THE MARTIAL ARTS

The following is a quest editorial by Alaric Dailey

Why is it, that karateka punch with 2 knuckles? why is it, that boxers punch with heavily padded gloves? And why was it unfortunate for Art Jimmerson (the boxer) in the first UFC to wear a single glove. Furthermore, why do big slow bullets have a reputation for stopping power vs smaller faster bullets (specifically the .45 vs 9mm argument).

It all has to do with penetration vs dissipation, when it comes to force, a martial artist must put as much weight and power into as small of area as possible to maximize its effect. Making the chosen weapon as small as possible, increases its penetration.

Pads dissipate the force, spreading it out over a wide area, and adding a nice soft surface. In the old days people did bare-knuckle boxing, and hitting the head with bare-knuckles is extremely dangerous, and can cause major damage, this is why boxing added gloves. Boxing gloves are huge and bulky, and they still manage to knock each others brains silly, that gives you some idea of how hard they are hitting.

When sparring in the martial arts, we will often wear pads, to dissipate the force, so that we wiggle the persons nose, rather than smearing it all over their face.

Thus when Art Jimmerson went into the first UFC with a boxing glove on, he went in taking away power off his punches and eliminating his ability to grab.

A really great demonstration of this can be seen with an sewing pin and a balloon. Sewing pins have that nice round end, and you can press pretty darn hard with the round end and never pop the balloon, but turn it around and use the sharp end, and it penetrates immediately popping the balloon. The round end dissipates the force, the sharp end penetrates!!! Easy as that to see.

As a related note, bullets travel SO fast that they have the opposite problem, they have a tendency to go directly through the target, rather than imparting that energy and stopping. At subsonic speeds the .45 has the larger diameter and slower speed to impart more of that force into the FIRST thing it hits, where the 9mm has a tendency to got right through the first thing and second. The faster and smaller bullets can pass right through and do LESS damage. This is why you use hollow-points for self-defense, they open up, causing them to slow and impart that energy, or at least more of it. This tendency for over penetration is something to think about when choosing a home-defense round, so when you shoot the bad guy, it doesn’t go through him and harm someone else.

Okay, if you’re a politically correct soccer mom, go away. The girls are pulling your precious Johnny’s pants down and laughing at him.

BUT, if you’re not too delicate of heart, let me ask you a question. Here’s the build up…

You’re on an elevator. You are staring at your cell phone. There is a picture of a terrorist, and he is the fellow standing next to you!

Your heartbeat escalates, sweat bursts out on your forehead.

He isn’t holding a dead man’s switch, but you know, from the bulge of his belly that he is wearing a vest with explosives!

If you give him a chance, he’ll grab that switch, and that elevator will be on the fast track to hell!

He glances over at you, sees his picture on the cell, and now you know you must move. You know who he is…and he knows you know!

…so there it is. You have time for one, and only one technique. It has got to be a fight ender. You can’t risk him falling down half aware and reaching into his pocket for the dead man’s switch. You have to take him out now!

All the way out!

No second chances!

So what technique are you going to use? Describe it in detail, tell us where it comes from.

It can be from any martial art, or not from a martial art. You can only use weapons that a person might carry on his person and not get busted, and which you, yourself, normally carry.

He can have similar weapons, cause that’s only fair, right?

And, be careful, anything you say will be dissected endlessly, and you just know that some of them cruel Beavis and Butthead types are just waiting to mock you all the way to Bullshido!

Now,
a few words about what Kwon Bup is.

When I went to the Kang Duk Won
it was pretty unique.
The owner,
Bob Babich,
had walked on on tournaments,
caused a ruckus that did,
everybody wanted to push the tournament,
a lot of community spirit,
and Bob just stood up and walked out,
and all his students followed him.
Why?
Because it was bogus.
Not real.
Decisions made by favoritism,
decisions made by people
who wouldn’t know a real technique if they saw it.

And,
because of this and other things,
such as the fact that Bob taught outlaw bikers,
gave him a ‘bad’ rep.

And outlaw school.
a rogue school.
Only bad people go there.
Yet,
on any good day,
you would see people from other martial arts schools
come down to see the class.
I was shocked,
one day,
when Ralphie Vallederez (sp, sorry)
the guy who had won the California Karate Tournament one year,
and who happened to be the big gun at my Kenpo school,
showed up to watch a class.

And,
for those who think we were crazies,
unwashed and disrespectful,
Bob studied with Don Buck,
who happened to be Mas Oyama’s favorite American student.
And when you walked into the dojo,
you bowed,
you were polite,
and you never lost your temper,
period.

It was quite the sight,
to see all these Hell’s Angeles,
standing so polite,
talking to Bob.

Not because he was a brutal a-hole who would knock the crap out of you.
But because when he started getting more polite,
you perked up,
something was wrong.
When Bob was upset
(almost never)
he would speak softer and softer,
almost whispering,
could’t hear him,
but you suddenly felt like your bowels were going to loose.

I remember one time
I was on the left side of Bob
during a class,
and Mud Car was ont he right.
Mud Car was our resident crazy.
He was just loopy,
looney tunes.
I’ll tell you about what a wacko he was some time,
but
during that class,
Bob really into it,
pushing,
and every feeling the push,
getting the pure art
worked into their bones,
really in heaven,
and suddenly Mud Car says,
“Hey Bob,
I have a pain right here,
on my shin.
Doesn’t hurt a lot,
but it comes and goes,
pinches,
really.
Do you know what I can do about that?”

POOF!
The magic evaporated,
everything went.
The plug was pulled and the intensity disappeared.

And,
believe me,
this really was a spiritual moment crushed.

And Bob turns to me and snarls,
“You could hit it with a lead pipe!”

He didn’t say it to Mud Car,
because it would have been wasted,
and maybe because Mud Car deserved to be knocked down,
and Bob wasn’t that kind of guy.

But I,
feeling the rage of that moment,
was absolutely frozen.
Couldn’t move.
Not terrified,
just so stunned I was incapable.

Bob continued,
and I managed to somehow move,
after everybody,
not even knowing what I was doing,
just copying somebody,
stunned and brain dead.

I never wanted to see him mad,
ever.

And,
that was the only time I ever saw the tip of that iceberg.
I saw him talk soft,
and that wasn’t so bad.

One time I used poor control,
after class he came up and spoke softly to me,
“Your control wasn’t good.”

Man,
I turned into a blithering idiot,
I could feel the weight of the world on me.
“I’m sorry,
I got excited, I–”
He stopped me with,
“Don’t worry. Just watch yourself.”

I have watched myself for forty years because of that whisper.

Anyway,
I could go on and on,
really golden times,
but…

After I left the Kang Duk Won
I started a project
of recording the art.
But,
after teaching for a while,
and realizing certain things,
and coming across variations of the Kang Duk Won,
I realized that I had been learning two arts.
One was the Kang Duk Won.
The other I called Kwon Bup.
It was the art practiced by Bob,
developed by Bob,
and put into the Kang Duk Won.

Now,
it is said that only a person with several decades experience
can hope to make an art.
And then,
that person has to be of rare quality.

Bingo and bingo.
Aside from a politeness
that made gentlemen out of Hell’s Angels,
Bob had the most immaculate technique I have ever seen
and I have seen a lot in nearly fifty years of studying
every martial art I could.

So I wrote the Kwon Bup book.
It is the forms and techniques
of the best martial artist I have ever seen.
This is a guy who could thrust his finger through a board,
and not break it,
but leave a hole.

Very few people have ever done that,
and I don’t know of any in America.

So,
now you know what I am pushing,
higher abilities,
politeness,
a very rarified realm of Martial Arts.

And,
I’ve got a few more books coming out
in the next couple of months.
The ones I’m working on right now,
however,
are in the vein of evolution of an art.

Pan Gai Noon for the china to Okinawan connection
Kang Duk Won for the pure Karate pre-Funakoshi
Kwon Bup for the American translation
Outlaw Karate for work I did on synthesizing KDW and KB,

Breakthrough Karate Training Manual!

Buddha Crane Karate is a unique Martial Arts book, and probably one of the most important martial arts books ever written.

It was actually put together back in the nineties, and it was the culmination of several years of some of the most original research ever done in the martial arts.

The author, Al Case, had spent decades researching material, was a writer for the martial arts magazines, and was on the cusp of his Matrixing discoveries. Matrixing is a form of logic unique to the martial arts.

He wrote Buddha Crane Karate, and began the process of putting down matrixing materials on paper. This involved discarding useless martial arts, poser techniques, techniques that just plain didn’t work, and assembling what was left, the heart and guts of real martial arts, into workable systems.

Buddha Crane was the first of the books.

Unfortunately, technology of the time made it impossible to make and distribute the Buddha Crane. Personal computers were still in their infancy, and it was impossible to translate the graphics into printable form.

The graphics, you see, are bodies described solely by lines and arcs of an early Appleworks program. Real caveman.

Indeed, modern Kindle platforms are unable to translate the graphics.

Thus, up until this publication, the book was seen only as an addition to the ‘Create Your Own Art,’ course crafted by Mr. Case.

The Create Your Art Course was a break through in itself. It consists of original material filmed in the eighties! Though it is unfortunately blurry and sound impaired, it is understandable, and it does stand as one of the most unique martial arts courses ever produced. And Buddha Crane Karate is appended almost an afterthought.

One of the most incredible breakthroughs of the martial arts as an afterthought! how odd.

The One Thing That P’s Me Off About Martial Artists

The Stopping Point for Martial Arts Knowledge

‘Just one thing p’s you off about Martial Artists, Al?’ you ask.

Yeah, really, just one thing.

Do you remember back when you were first starting, and you would encounter the attitude that ‘my school is best/my art is best.’

angry martial artsNow, after having done a few martial arts you have the overall picture, and you know that not one art is best.

And, if you are pretty savvy, you understand that people need to think their art is best, at least in the beginning. It is a mark of loyalty, of fanaticism that is necessary to truly immerse yourself in your studies.

You need that degree of commitment if you are really going to learn anything.

Martial Arts are tough, and it takes a person with zeal to make it through them.

Now, having said that, what is the one thing that p’s me off about Martial Artists?

Well, interestingly enough, it is an extrapolation of that stupidity of which we are all necessarily guilty.

It is an attitude that, since we have done martial arts we know everything.

It is a stopping point that happens after somebody has learned something significant, and then doesn’t know how to proceed, and thus doesn’t want to proceed, and falls back on, here it is, ‘I know that/we have that in our system.’

Yep, it is the refusal to move, the inability to learn more, and simply because we think we know it all.

But if you knew it all you could make an orange appear in your hand. Out of nothing.

Or vaporize a rock, into nothing, without the pesky atomic explosion that might accomplish such folderol.

Now, I encounter that attitude more than most, and this because I have gone past it. There is a residue, you see, which accumulates. And this residue of which I speak insulates those who wish to know, but don’t know how, who have succumbed to the one thing that pisses me off about martial artists.

So, you don’t know everything, and I say, ‘Look, here is this matrixing thing, and it can show you what you don’t know! Doesn’t matter if you don’t know what you don’t know, it works for everybody, and it finds out what you don’t know, even if it is different from what everybody else doesn’t know!’

Most people are polite, think I am just drumming up a little internet business with an internet gimmick, and they simply slide over my claims of a science…and the fact that I have over 600 pages of testimonials, and almost no detractors.

Well, I have a few detractors, but the odd thing–every one of those detractors has never taken one of my courses!

But to return to the sane ones, most martial artists smile, relax in their hard won competence, and say, ‘Oh, yeah, I understand what he’s saying, so I must have that in my art. No need to look.’

But if asked if they have ever seen a matrix graph? Whether they have ever come across something called a matrix of blocks? Whether they have seen the martial arts listed as a geometrical arrangement? They can’t say that they have.

Or, sad, if they have, the graph or arrangement is wrong. It is just a compilation of kenpo (or other) techniques that, given enough techniques, will invariably slide one to the other.

Not a logic, but a happenstance when one has information overload.

Not a slim, streamlined way of understanding all arts, of accessing all arts, but a jumble of everything piled in a bucket so you can’t see the bottom.

Well, there you go, that’s the one thing that pisses me off about Martial Artists. The fact that they have reached the top, and don’t understand it is a beginning for a whole new thing. A relaxation into self-satisfaction, and the end of the climb.

An inability to learn because they think they know it all.
