The Difference Between Bruce Lee and You

Good morning.
Awesome day for a work out.
Just fantastic.
Enjoy yourselves!

Okay,
so what is the difference between Bruce Lee and yourself?
Let me list some things,
and we will see how you fare.
Remember,
however,
this is to be used only to point you in directions,
to make you think about your work outs,
and what you want to do in the martial arts.
Other than that,
comparisons between people are sort of silly.
We are each unique,
you know?

So,
The Little Dragon studied a classical martial art.
Wing Chun.
Have you studied a classical martial art?
Bruce Lee wasn’t satisfied with that martial art.
Are you satisfied with your martial art?
Bruce found it not as workable as he wished,
found it lacking in conditioning,
and many other things.
Have you isolated your exact dissatisfaction
with your martial art?
Is it conditioning?
Is it too much freestyle, or forms, or…?
You need to know this so you can decide
what you want to do about it.

Bruce researched some 26 different martial arts.
How many martial arts have you researched?
Not just read an article about,
but delved into and found books and videos
and even talked to people from those arts?

Bruce Lee made connections between various Martial Arts.
He was mixing and matching between not just techniques,
but training methods,
and in this way he came up with his own training methods.
Have you gone through a variety of martial arts?
Looked for training methods that you can import
into your own martial art?

The Little Dragon was not politically correct.
He talked the talk,
and he was willing to put it on the line.
Fortunately,
he only had a couple of fights,
but he was willing to mix it up
with any fellow who came into his studio
and had a serious question.
Further,
he was willing to learn from what he observed,
and even to the point of fixing his own system.
This is an important point:
are you willing to let yourself be proved wrong?
And then learn from it?

The Dragon read voraciously
and his library of philosophical volumes
was supposed to number up to 5,000 books.
And he had read,
and could even quote
from those books.
How many books have you read?

Mr. Lee did what he wanted.
He started and stopped teaching,
had schools,
went to Hollywood,
went around the world,
talked to whoever he wanted.

He was,
in a word,
dedicated.
He was dedicated to finding the truth of his art,
and the truth of himself.
He succeeded by incredible willpower.
Are you wiling to make that commitment.

Interesting questions, eh?
And I’ve just touched the surface.

The thing to understand here
is that Bruce wanted matrixing.
Heck,
everybody wants matrixing.
Everybody wants a logic
that will make sense of their lives.
Everybody wants a method
by which they can understand the world.

Look at the ways he was organizing the martial arts.
He would list all the potentials of timing.
He lacked a matrix,
and there are doubtless still holes,
but this can be credited to the fact
that he was slanting himself
towards a certain combat efficiency.

He tried to list all the potentials for ways of attacking,
he developed new ways of training chi sao (sticky hands),
and on and on and on.

And all because he was dedicated,
and dedicated to learning everything he could
about all martial arts.
He just lacked matrixing
to make sure he got it all,
and to make sure the organization was correct.

Here’s an interesting concept,
when I matrixed time on the Matrix Kung Fu course,
I left out split timing
because it was too obvious.
Yet Bruce’s understanding of timing
doesn’t include what is on my matrix
on that course.

I tell you,
I really enjoy going over what Bruce did,
and comparing it to what I did.
Lot of food for thought there.

Anyway,
think about the questions I’ve posed here,
and consider whether you have sufficiently
compared and contrasted
enough martial arts,
and more important,
whether you have a method
by which you can make sure your art is logical,
and fits together as a whole.

It has a matrix for timing
that will totally educate you
as to what timing is,
and how to use it.
The funny thing is,
accept for the fact it is about timing,
it addresses an entirely different subject,
but without that subject
you can’t really understand what timing is.
Odd.
But that’s what matrixing does,
it makes the connections you never would have seen.

The key here is that
his students were able to
correct their own stance and alignment.

Do you get it?
By themselves!

How would you like to be able to take your students
and get them to understand what they were doing,
and why,
so well that they could fix themselves?

Man,
this simple thing.
So difficult.
Yet…
then you can move your classes into
advanced teaching,
and know that everybody truly understands
what you are saying.

That is the essence of teaching,
you know,
to get the idea out of your head
and into his head.

Used to be
you had to drill a guy for three to four years
before he got it.

But using the methods Craig just used
you can do it easy.
One shot teaching.
No need to repeat yourself endlessly,
waiting for the guy to get it.

Once you have this down,
then you can move into advanced stuff.
Start teaching other arts,
show things like one finger takedowns,
intention throws,
and so on.

I like books.
I haven’t gone to ereading yet,
I know it is the wave of the future,
but I love the feel of a book.
I like to know that I can’t lose it
in one computer blip.

You can read the intro to the book
if you go to the store on Monster.
But,
of course,
there’s more to the story
than what I politely say.

Tong Bei is very well known in China,
not so well known in the US.
The thing that I stress
is that it is a concept.
A bunch of concepts
tied together
and it results in the most
efficient motion possible.

The first time in my life
that I ever moved efficiently,
I was bowling,
and I saw a pencil rolling off one of those slant desks,
and I grabbed it.

Except,
I didn’t lurch forward and flail,
I somehow moved out of my body,
and watched my hand
move faster than it had ever moved before,
and it was lie I was moving outside time,
nothing stopped me,
or slowed me down.
It was me moving my body
without adverse influences effecting me.
An anomaly,
didn’t know how I had done it,
until decades later,
through matrixing and martial arts.

But,
the point here is…
‘Adverse influences.’
Never heard that one,
at least not in this respect.
So here goes.

Your body is prone to influences.
Things that effect it from within and without.

When you’re a kid,
you aren’t effected,
your motion is free,
but your body is not formed
and so you don’t understand how it works.
You grow,
your body matures,
and…it slows down.

The cruel trap is that at the same time
you come into a fully functioning body,
the adverse influences kick in.

So,
what are a few of these adverse influences?

Well,
each muscles connection to each other muscle.
That’s a big adverse influence.
Simply,
you go to physical education class,
and you struggle in contest,
baseball or wrestling or whatever,
and your body learns to resist.
And the exercises are designed to build muscle
and not to work the muscles
as one coordinated unit.

You end up resisting yourself.

That’s a heck of an adverse influence.

Here’s another biggie.
Gravity.
Yes,
you move against gravity,
and the constant repetition of struggle,
of getting tired for exercising
over and over again,
it teaches the body to struggle against gravity,
and it trains it to act in a certain
‘gravity resistant’ mode.

And there are other things.
Perhaps incidents,
like you get clocked in a fight,
and your body doesn’t want to fight again,
so it resists you.

And so on.

So when I finally found out
what some of my roots were,
and came across the tong bei connection,
I was interested.

When I started doing the exercises
I list in the book,
I felt a thrill go through me.

These simple exercises,
they worked directly against
adverse influences.
Not by being complex,
but by being easy.

For instance,
in an exercise I might give a simple instruction
mentioning gravity.
You do it,
and you feel what I’m talking about
and you do the exercise,
and a few weeks later,
bingo,
you are minus one adverse influence.
By addressing gravity in a certain way,
you are suddenly shed of the adverse influence of gravity.

I started doing the exercises,
and within couple of weeks
I found my arms loosening up,
moving at speed.
And I realized that
some of the methods I had used
to achieve freedom of motion,
were bypassed
and made inefficient
by these tong bei exercises.

Look,
major concept here.
As I say in the book,
the body is compacted every day.
Gravity
(and that’s just one influence)
hammers it
so that you are an inch shorter
at the end of the day.
Then you elongate during the night,
while you lay horizontal
and the body stretches back out.
So your intent
is to find exercises
which will undo gravity and other influences,
and return the body to its
more efficient mode,
to when it could move quick and easy
unhindered by things lie gravity.

Okay,
I know I’ve been babbling a bit.
It’s that way when I am trying to put things into words,
that aren’t commonly known,
aren’t currently in
the database of human understanding.

So forgive me,
but get the book.
Good Lard,
it ain’t much more than
the price of a MacDonalds meal.

It isn’t a bunch of egghead stuff,
it is simple instruction.

And,
BTW,
there are a lot of matrixes.
I show a lot of the matrixes I used
to understand motion,
how the body is used,
and especially how I finally broke through
and understood internal power.

Why Did Ed Parker Make Five Styles of Kenpo?

The Five Kenpos of Ed Parker

The first Kenpo of Ed Parker was actually Okinawan Karate. One can see the forms in the string of techniques in his first book. Forms were actually not taught, except, I believe, for Naihanchi and maybe one or two others.

The second version was a blend of Karate and jujitsu. This version was originally taught in a small temple in Japan.

Fiver versions of Kenpo Karate, and which one is the real one?

The third Kenpo of Mr. Parker was actually created by James Wing Woo, a kung Fu stylist who taught Ed’s class, and helped him write a book while he lived in Pasadena. This was the version of kenpo from which many of the forms were originated.

The fourth kenpo was a reworking and renaming of the 3rd version.

The fifth and final Kenpo was created by Ed Parker to replace the earlier styles of Kenpo. He was proud of the fact that it actually wasn’t kenpo anymore.

Now, this all stated, one has to ask why there were so many styles. The answer is simple, Ed was trying to simplify and make sense out of the mess.

The fact of the matter is that the martial arts are random sequences of motions. This causes the art to be hard to learn, and hard to apply. It is simply hard to memorize to the point of intuition so much data.

Ed was trying to simplify and make sense out of the thing so that students could learn faster (among other reasons).

Unfortunately, he failed.

He came close, but his efforts were still comprised of random sequences of motion.

Each method he designed or compiled or whatever was built upon the ashes of the previous, tried to include new concepts and theories he had come across, and does not make summation of kenpo, or the martial arts.

Was he wrong for doing what he did? Not at all. His work was ground breaking and innovative, he just lacked the logic and perspective to bring it all together.

Does it mean that the kenpo you are studying is wrong?

Nope.

For Kenpo is a manifestation of knowledge, and each person contains the knowledge in his own unique way.

Though Ed failed to make the art a science, it is still an art, and it is still whatever people make it.

Interestingly enough, Ed was proud that the last version of his Kenpo wasn’t Kenpo at all. If you want to read that story click on The Man Who Killed Kenpo.

Karate Kicking Drills for REAL Power!

Kicks are one of the best and most powerful martial arts weapons you can ever develop. Not only are kicks extremely good for the cardio, giving an instant sweat during a work out, but they are one of the most powerful weapons you can have if you are ever in a fight. After all, most people in the world don’t don’t have the faintest idea as to how to use their legs, and if you do have an idea…you’ve got an instant advantage.

Of course, kicks take a little extra hard work if they are going to develop into something you can be proud of. But if you take your time, train properly and regularly, and do learn the types of kicks in a certain pattern…you can have power busting kicks of the most magnificent order. That said, let’s go over the proper order of how to develop these kicks.

The first drill is to merely stand in one place and do the kick. You don’t have to have a stance, you can do them at a moderate and easy on the body speed, and you can even put your hand on the wall. The idea here is to look at your body andlearn how to make it move to generate efficient and effective and totally destructive kicks.

The second drill is going to be done from stationary stances. Take a kick like a simple front snap kick, low level to begin, higher as you get better, and learn how to apply it from the rear leg while standing in a front stance. Go through all the stances you know, one by one, kicking with the foot you are not standing on.

The third drill is to use the leg which holds the most weight in your stance. This means you kick with the leg supporting the most weight. Again, go through your stances, do them one at a time, but this time figure out how to hop so that the leg you are standing on executes the kick, and the leg you do not have weight on replaces the leg you are standing on.

The fourth drill is to go through and analyze the various directions you can kick in. This is going to require some quick weight shifts and turns of the body, and the ability to think of your body as very light. Simply do the third kick, as described in the last paragraph, but this time execute the kick first to the south, then go back to your stance and do the kick to the east, then the west, then the north.

Now, there are a few things you should remember as you develop your kicks through these four stages. Don’t be one of these people who do a few kicks per side and then quit. Do a couple of hundred kicks, three hundred, maybe even five hundred kicks per kick per leg.

The idea is to develop your legs so that they are as light and easy to use as your hands. So concentrate on learning how to relax while you do your kicks. Soon your kicks will be second nature, light and easy, marvelous little things of quick flick, and yet able to instantly end any fight.

Go on, Karate kicks, Taekwondo kicks, Kung Fu or even Aikido or Tai Chi or whatever, do what i told you on this page and watch your kicking power grow and grow and GROW!

Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan Decide Who is the Best Martial Artist!

Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan fight to the Finish!

What many people don’t know is that Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan got together to decide who was the best martial artist of all time.

You think I’m gonna get fat, my friend?

bruce lee kenpo trainingI know, you think this is a crock, that Bruce Lee is dead, so this couldn’t happen.

But the truth is that Bruce Lee is actually alive, his death was faked, and he has been living in a government compound with other people who have gone into hiding. This compound houses such entities as Judge Crater, Jimmy Hoffa, Elvis, Jim Morrison, Marylyn Monroe, and so on.

You know, people who have become so big, so iconic, that they pose a threat to the government.

So just last month, because of concerns raised in an article written by Al Case in his FreeMartialArts website, ‘Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li: Who is the Best Martial Artist?’ Bruce, Jet and Jackie came together to decide, with fists, who was the best Kung Fu fighter.

Mind you, the fact that they were so willing to come together in the first place proves that these three legends have thought about this on their own.

To be honest, they respect each other, this was obvious to this writer, who was the only invited spectator, but they also have a bit of disdain for each other. After all, they have all seen each others movies, and they all have their legion of fans calling them the best, all of which stokes their personal ego

Jet Li arrived first at the Chinatown warehouse selected for this one of a kind Martial Arts tournament. He sauntered in, swathed in sunglasses and a fancy, white scarf. Every inch the movie star, the youngest of the trio, he puffed on a thin cheroot and had a babe on each arm.

Jackie arrived second. He is the second youngest, or oldest, depending on whether you are half empty or half full, and he hobbled in on a pair of crutches with both of his arms in casts.

With a friendly sneer Jet stood up and helped him to a seat.

“Thanks, Jet,” murmured Jackie. “Did you know I have broken every bone in my body? I’ve got so much arthritis I could bottle it.” He struggled to bend his knees and sat down in a chair, wiping his brow and trying to shrug off the pain.

Then he pulled out a quart bottle of whiskey and drank the whole thing. Canadian Mist, I believe.

Then the grand old man, the Little Dragon himself, Bruce Lee was rolled into the room. His chin overlapped another chin, which overlapped another chin, and it was fortunate that he had his own motorized wheel chair, for he couldn’t get up if he had to.

“Hi guys,” He wheeled to a position facing Jet and Jackie. “Elvis has been cooking for me. He makes these great peanut butter and banana and bacon sandwiches. He slathers them with mayo, first, then slices up cubes of butter, and he makes sure he soaks the white bread with the bacon juice. I tell ya, man, nothing goes to waste with E. Sort of makes up for all those years of drinking that stupid vegetable juice i did.”

He moped the sweat off his forehead.

“Okay, so we gonna fight, or what?” asked Jackie, ending the pleasantries.

“I sorta thought we’d talk about it, first,” said Bruce, reaching for an oxygen mask he kept hanging over the back of the wheelchair.

“You’d like that, wouldn’t you, old man,” snapped Jet.

“Jet, baby, can we go back to the hotel room?” whined one of the babes on his arms.

And, at this point, this writer must point out that it didn’t look like Jet had his arms out for the girls to hold, rather, it looked like they were holding him up by the arms!

“Are you all right?” this concerned and solicitous writer asked Mr. Li.

“Yeah, man. Just a little tired,” he sagged in the girls’ grip, and this writer knew the cause: Jet had been exhausted by the two girls prior to coming to this meeting!

Jackie responded with, “I think we could do without the physicality if we just counted fans, people who have seen our movies, that sort of thing.

“You’ve got more movies!” protested the Little Dragon.

“You’ve had longer for people to see your movies,” countered Jackie.

Jet laughed. “A communist, and he wants to vote!”

“Hey!” protested Jackie. “No need to insult! you got a better idea?”

“You guys could get wheel chairs and we could have a race,” gasped Bruce, then drawing deeply on his oxygen tank.

This writer, observing that these three men were too old, too out of shape to really fight, said, “Maybe we should forget about a fight. I don’t want anybody to get hurt.”

“Don’t be an idiot!” rasped Bruce.

“You idiot!” shouted Jackie.

“Guy’s not very smart,” opined Jet.

“You stupid,” said Bruce with a look of disgust.

Then they began to really insult your faithful correspondent. They called him a dope, said he sat on his brains, and would flunk as a paperweight.

That he was a bad writer and a lousy martial artist.

That he voted for Barack Obama.

And Bruce said, again, “You stupid.”

Finally, outraged all, these three incredible martial artists, Bruce Lee,Jet Li and Jackie Chan, shoved this writer out of the door.

Jet snapped, “We’ll have our own fight, and you aren’t invited!”

Jackie chimed in with, “We’ll let you know who wins!”

And Bruce merely rolled his head back and forth on his huge and blubber laden frame and said, “You stupid.”

Hey! What about me? don’t I count for something?

The two girls who had escorted Jet into the warehouse held my arms, their lithe but momentous frames immobilizing me, and I could not get free to return to the warehouse. I struggled, I sear I struggled, but they must have known jujitsu, or MMA, or something, for they held me firm, and even giggled as they did so.

And there I stood, outside the door to the secret warehouse, chagrined and disappointed. Held in place by pulchritudinous and bodacious females, one of which whispered in my ear “Wanna go to our hotel room? and who I could smell whiskey on her breath, and the other who chewed and snapped gum and looked bored.

Silence stared back at me, and then, suddenly, sounds exploded from the warehouse.

“AIEEE!” Bruce whooped.

The sound of furniture breaking.

“You fat—“ more furniture, sounding like it wasn’t just breaking, but actually exploding.

“Call me a commie you capitalistic warpig!”

“AIEEEE! AIEEEE!”

I swear, in my mind, I could see what was happening. Jet turning a somersault, Bruce rolling his wheel chair into Jackie’s chins, Jackie yelling “Ow!”

Jackie rolling across the floor, holding his groin, saying, “Oh, my arthritis hurts!”

For long minutes, at least twenty minutes, the fight went on, the damage must have been incredible, the amount of pain these three warriors could inflict, and take, must have been incredible.

It was a fight that only Wong Jack Man could have survived.

Finally, however, it was over. Whatever had happened had happened, and the damage had been done.

It took a few minutes – this author had to threaten Dim Mak to the bodies of his gorgeous captors – but finally I broke free and pulled open the door to the warehouse.

Every single stick of furniture had been broken. Rugs that had been nailed down were now overturned, and even the paint on the wall was bruised. Doubtless from the massive amounts of secret chi that had been generated by these three superheroes.

Jet sauntered past this writer and into the hallway, my head turned, my eyes wide, to follow him.

A sound from inside the warehouse, and I quickly looked back. Jackie brushed by, quick on his crutches.

My gaze followed him, and Bruce rolled his wheel chair over my toes.

I turned and stared at the three iconic and even legendary martial artists. They stood…well, Bruce sat…and stared at me.

Jet sneered, his arms supported…uh, supporting his babes.

Jackie breathed hard and was bent double and even moaning a little.

Bruce merely looked at my toes and grinned.

“We had our fight,” stated Jet Li.

“And we know who’s best,” said Jackie, straightening up to speak, but immediately bending back over and gasping.

“But we aren’t going to tell you,” said Bruce. And then he added. “You stupid.”

And then they walked…Bruce rolled…away. Into the legends of time, into the myth of history, to hide in government sponsored warehouses to await a time when the world was ready to be influenced by their glory.

And this writer was left with one, and only one, conclusion.

The author, age 25, 1974. We were all young once, hopefully, we will all grow old.

There are two type of people in this world.

First, there are those who think their art is best, and everybody else is a loser; who take umbrage at this article as being disrespectful to the greatest martial artists of all time; who probably didn’t even finish reading the article before mouthing their opinion as the nefarious and scurrilous nature of the author of this piece to the world.

Bruce Lee, the Little Dragon, was born on November 27, 1940. He would have been 74 at the time of this article, and he has been missed by EVERY martial artist in the world.

Jet Li was born on April 26th, 1963, and he was 51 at the time of this article.

Jackie Chan was born April 7, 1954, and he was 60 at the time of this article.

Both Jet and Jackie have stated that they were inspired by Bruce Lee.

Hey de hi hi! Been just putting in articles for blogs,  but I have the time to do it right, if you have the time to read it right. So uncross your eyes and get ready to rock and unroll.

Been into time lately, realized it ran backwards three decades ago, figured out what it meant the other day.

People who study history are reading what is written by the conqueror. They are getting what the historians feel like blabbin’ about. They are contributing to history by going forward.

When you study the martial arts, however, you are trying to go backwards to the original concepts, find out where the art came from, what part of your soul it tweaks.

Lose your reaction time. Stop thinking. Be.

Easy, eh? Well, it is so easy it is hard. Haven’t seen any schools of martial arts that address this, or try to do it, except in the most by the way method, or through passed down stuff they don’t understand and so can’t really apply.

I, however, obsess on it. To lose your reaction time, to lose your mind, to exist in the now, that is what it is all about.

The Truth of Chi and Pa Kua Chang

Do enough Pa Kua Chang and something really weird happens…

Pa Kua, as many people know, is that martial art where you walk in a circle endlessly. Circles where you find loops within spirals within circles.

Circlepa kua chang instructorTo explain this really weird thing that happens in Pa Kua Chang, let me explain a couple of things first. Understand these things, and you will find that weird is normal in this universe, and normal is weird. Okey dokey?

The circle must consist of eight steps from beginning to end. This is about one good leg sweep, or six feet in diameter. And, of course, the beginning is the end, and the end is the beginning, and so on.

Long time Pa Kua students claim that if you explore various positions of the palms as you walk the circle, that the positions stand for various phenomena. Fire palms, water palms, lightening palms, thunder palms, and so on. By following this analogy they have created a separate and entire universe. While this universe can occupy a student for a lifetime, there hasn’t been a good explanation for what is happening, up till now.

When you create this Pa Kua universe, you should understand that the body is a machine. Just like alternating current, power goes down and up the legs. You should confirm it with a good dictionary, at this point, that power is energy, and energy is the capacity for work, and the capacity for work is how much weight you can lift.

Energy of the body is credited with being created by the tan tien. The tan tien is a point a couple of inches below the navel. The tan tien sends the energy down and up and the legs and back into the tan tien. What happens is that the body becomes a capacitor, a storage device, and the energy can be stored for later use.

But also, and most interesting, is that after walking the circle sufficient with the idea I’ve detailed here, you will experience actual lightening going up and down your legs. You will also, as you explore the potential of the palms in conjunction with the storing of the energy, experience a barber pole type energy swirl up and down your arms.

Pa Kua is not mystical, it is common sense physics, but it does take a dedicated practitioner and a calm mind to experience what I have explained here. For the body to start acting as a capacitor one must tell the body to do so enough times and with enough sincerity, and this while walking the circle enough times. If one learns to believe that this universe is not a trap, but a journey, what I have told you here is not only possible, but even easy.

On Creating Your Own Martial Art

You Have to Create Your Own Martial Art…

or you don’t really know the martial arts.

A True Martial Art is an act of creation. A simple statement with far reaching effects.

Art is the break down and synthesis of the old into the new.

The funny thing is that most instructors frown on the act of creating anything new. The most popular method of teaching is to have the student copycat, exactly and without deviation, what the teacher says and does. But a fight is always new and original, and requires creativity to win.

creation of martial artThus, if you are going to win a fight, it behooves you to learn how to be creative. Interestingly, nobody has ever written a course or book on how to be creative. Isn’t that interesting, a whole art that has no creativity in it?

To be creative one has to break apart the current method of teaching one is engaged in. Thus, one method for being creative would be to simply take the moves of the forms and interchange them. Take a sequence from classical karate, say the first set of specific movements in pinan three, and then do the second specific set of movements from pinan four, then the third set of specific movements from pinan five…and so on.

The first thing you will learn is that these things don’t fit together. So, how can you make them fit together? How can you adjust the footwork, and the geometry of the arms, so that the movements fit together and even make sense?

Another thing you are going to learn is that things don’t always work. Doing the blocks in this order would never fit a normal attack. So, explore not normal attacks, and, tweak your movements until they do fit a normal attack.

Another thing you will find is the impulse to do different things. Simply, you are going to start to create. Your mind is going to start exploring channels that normally would have been closed to you.

As I said in the first paragraph, art is the fact of creation. Honestly, people should drill you to death, help you make every movement your own, instill art in you. But, even more honestly, if you don’t start taking the movements apart and reconfiguring them, all that drilling is going to be about as good as a death knell, so you’d best seriously consider this concept of Creating your own Martial Art.

What Really Happened at the Shaolin Temple

The Real Shaolin History That Nobody Tells You!

The real Shaolin History is one of those animals that’s difficult to pin down. One reason for this is that the communist regime controls all history, and rewrites it to suit the state. Another reason is that the current history is of an oral tradition, and therefore quite open to mythicizing.

The real history starts with Bodhidharma taking the long journey to China to see the emperor. This tends to build up Bodhidharma at the expense of the emperor, and this isn’t right. The Chinese ruler, you see, was encouraging Buddhist monks to translate texts from sanskrit to Chinese.

The emperor believed that if he saw to the translation of these religious texts the general public would be enabled to study this religion. He believed this would allow him to enter nirvana. Bodhidharma told the emperor otherwise, which gained him nothing but a swift kick in the pants right out the emperor’s doors.

Bodhidharma then sought refuge at a local temple to meet up with other monks, and was turned away. The head abbot apparently thought him a trouble maker, or maybe he just didn’t want to rub elbows with somebody the emperor found wanting.

The temple he was refused entrance to was constructed in an area which had been razed, or burned down, and the emperor’s gardeners had planted new trees. Thus, the temple was named Shaolin (young forest). Nowhere to go, Bodhidharma began living in a cave.

Eventually Bodhidharma gained admittance to the temple, and legends have it that it took nine years, he bored a hole in the cave with his eyesight, he cut off his eyelids and planted them, and all sorts of other rather ludicrous legends. No one knows why he was admitted to the temple, but it was a good thing he was. The monks were in bad physical shape.

The Shaolin monks spent all their time hunched over books (scrolls, etc.) and were a sickly lot. So Bodhidharma taught them a series of movements based on hatha yoga and raja yoga. These movements were based on the 18 main animals of Chinese-Indian iconography, and this was doubtless the source of the five Shaolin animals.

This was the true origin of shaolin kung fu, though it is difficult to say when body conditioning was transformed into actual martial arts. The region was preyed upon by bandits, and it can be safely assumed that somebody whose body is in good physical condition is going to stand a better chance of survival than somebody whose body is not. At any rate this real Shaolin history has more legitimate sources than the various myths and legends which currently abound.
