In the first four articles
we have discussed how and why the American Indian
was possibly the finest light infantry in the world.

I know that I lost a few people with the last article.
Logical,
real,
and yet some people are so out of tune with themselves,
of who they really are,
that they pounded on the back button
once they read my last article.

That said,
I want to sum up
and mention a few odds and ends.

First,
the American Indian was possibly the finest light infantry in the world.
And when the European introduced the horse,
he became possibly the finest light cavalry in the world.
I haven’t mentioned this before,
but it is true.

The reason the Indian was so good
was because if he wasn’t…he starved.
In fact,
he wasn’t beaten in combat by the white man,
so much as infected with disease.

The Indian was raised to be a warrior.
At the age of six he was turned over to the braves,
and he was taught,
under the strictest circumstances,
how to be silent,
how to walk and hunt with extreme silence.
This teaching included a profound respect
for the spirituality of the world.

Here’s a few things I didn’t mention.

Watch your posture.
From the tips of your toes throughout your entire body,
there is a correct way to move.
Find the way.
(Hint: The Master Instructor Course)

And,
another hint,
when I was a wee lad,
back in the dark ages,
my grandmother would not let me slouch.
When sitting it was demanded
that I sit with my back straight.
Proper posture,
no slouching allowed.
Period.
Take this attitude towards every part of your body.

You need more leg strength.
In a society filled with chairs and slouches,
you need to cultivate your ability to move,
and this means,
starts with,
strong legs.

Breath deeply,
but silently.
Breath so that every cell in your body benefits.

Cultivate the ability to be still.
When you are still you can better emanate
(and learn to focus)
awareness.

Dress with an eye to blending with the environment.
Wouldn’t you love to see a camouflage dress suit?

Be aware of where you stand.
Don’t create a shadow,
blend with the shadows.
Take advantage of light.

Check the wind.

Here is a not so funny story.
I read of a fellow in Viet Nam
who claimed he could smell the enemy.
He insisted on basing his motion in the bush
on what he could smell.
The members of his squad quickly learned to trust him totally.
He was always right,
always spotted the enemy,
and he and his squad (those who followed his nose)
came home.

Others
who had no sense of smell,
didn’t come home.

To be truthful,
I think there is more to a sense of smell
than just smell.
It is said a shark can smell blood in the steer
from a mile away.
But a bit of blood
CANNOT travel a mile through water.
So what is the shark sensing?
Might this not be an ability we know nothing about?
A ‘spiritual’ sensing of energy
in spite of water?

And there are other examples of this thing
that might be smell,
but might be something else,
in nature.

Matrixing the Thought of Combat

Man!
It is BEEYOUTIFUL out.
Time for a BEEYOUTIFUL workout!

A quick word:
Google is suppressing newsletter,

Bruce Lee did a good job of analyzing the motion of combat.
He took apart when,
for instance,
during the opponent’s punch,
you should attack.
You can find out more about this if you dig around at
FreeBruceLee.com.

BUT,
nobody’s ever really tried to figure out
what happens at the moment of combat.
Not the moment of launch,
but the thought that must occur
before the launch.

And,
to be honest,
nobody’s ever had the neutronics data,
so it is no wonder that nobody has ever done this.

SO…

the one thing to remember is that you have a thought,
and energy, and body,
follow it.
The odd thing in all this
is that thoughts go in only two directions.

Thoughts go out.
Thoughts go in.

This can be made complex,
if you stick on analyzing emotion,
emotion disguises what you are doing,
and so on.

So,
the exact moment of attack,
should be when the opponent is,
for whatever reason,
not thinking out,
towards you,
but inwards,
towards himself.

If you understand this,
you understand the purpose of meditation:
sitting (or moving) and never allowing thoughts to invert,
to come back towards yourself.
In other words,
to watch the world
without having internal thoughts.

Here are the ways you can take advantage
of this momentary lapse of awareness.
The most important is distraction.

Distraction is when you point the opponent’s attention elsewhere.

He blinks because of a fly.
He looks because of a motion to the side.
He thinks when you tell him there is someone behind him.
He thinks because you trash talk.
He gets mad,
or otherwise falls to emotion.
And so on.

You can attack when any of these,
or other,
distractions occur.

You can attack after the thought of attack,
but that is not a good idea,
unless you are immaculate in your strategy and tactics.
The reason is attacks will collide,
mistakes can be made once you let him go into motion,
and so on.

BUT…
the best time to attack a person?
Before he has the thought.

Doesn’t matter when he makes a decision,
or for what reason,
you simply attack before his thought.
At that point he has become victim,
as he is going to be responding to your attack,
instead of creating an original one of his own.

Here’s the thing,
people think you can’t see a thought.
But you can.
It takes an immense amount of discipline in classical martial arts.
It takes less time in matrixed martial arts.
Logic just allows you to study,
and therefore learn,
faster.

Heck,
you see people thinking all the time.
You see the look in their eyes,
you read their bodies,
you feel their energy.
If you are good you actually perceive the thought.
But that level of good
depends upon how effective and sincere your training has been.

The lesson here?
Train hard,
train long,
matrix (make logical)
everything you do.
Make yourself a perceptive person
by looking out at the world,
and not inward to your own thoughts,
troubles,
emotions,
etc.

A Few Fixes for the Martial Arts this Year

Martial Arts Mastery the Right Way

Great morning to you!
A great work out to you.
A year full of great work outs to you!

Here’s a few martial arts thoughts to start off 2016

I asked this question last year, and I’m going to ask it again.
Where do you want to be at the end of 2016?
What martial arts do you want to be expert in?
How far do you want to go?

Mastery comes from two factors,
hard hard you work,
and how scientifically correct is your art.

To make yourself work hard,
put notes up around the house.
Make yourself do fifty punches before you open the frig.
Do two forms before you go outside.
And inside.
Practice your applications as you walk
to the bathroom.
And so on.

Heck,
do your forms before you eat,
before you sleep,
and upon waking.

If you want to make it this year,
if you want mastery,
you need to be dedicated.

And,
here’s something to think about.
I was talking to somebody about the difference between
fighting and the martial arts.

You can be a fighter but not a martial artist.
You can’t be a martial artist without being a fighter.
You can’t be a good martial artist without giving up fighting.
It’s true.

It’s also true that
in a sport you attempt to defeat the other person.
In a martial art you attempt to control yourself.

You should know a minimum of two martial arts.
One with lots of force,
one with lots of flow.
Do that and your mind won’t be trapped by
being compelled to move in only one direction.

To win a fight the first thing you must do is control the distance.
While there is an art to fighting,
the true art is in control.

When it comes to augmenting your studies…
Some people learn best from a video.
Some people learn best from a book.
The best people learn from both.

One thing you should do,
if you really want to make it to mastery this year,
is sit down and make a list of polite things you can do.
Fighting is easy,
being polite,
especially when somebody wants to fight,
is not always so easy.
But it is the way to the true martial art.

Okey dogley.
That’s enough for now,
but think about spending a whole year doing nothing
but accumulating wisdom.
That’s going to give your martial art real legs.

The Truth About the Martial Arts

The Truth!

Good morning!
Every work out you do
produces more of you.

Well, well.
I’m going to tell you the truth today.
and there is a question in it for you.
It’s funny,
only about 50 people will read this.
I’ve got over 1600 on the newsletter list,
but only about 50 of them open their email.
The rest just wanted the free books,
and then consigned my newsletter to the junk lists.
That’s the internet,
you know.
Guaranteed anonymity.
A chance to ghost through life
without any commitment.
And,
I’ll be honest,
I do the same thing.
I’ve got different reasons,
but I do the same thing.
Oh, well.
Are you ready for the truth?
(Quote Jack: ‘You can’t HANDLE the truth!’)
Okay,
here it is.

I was reading the Patanjali,
this was some time ago,
and the point was made:
we are bound by our desires.
Which is to say:
We are trapped by our fantasies.
We are imprisoned by what we want…
and have lost sight of reality.

Sounds like I’m going egghead on you,
eh?
Well, not really.

When you do the martial arts
you are training to defeat hordes of home invaders,
slaughter gangs of street thugs,
maybe even defeat the government
which came to take away your 2nd amendment.

How many of us have used the martial arts?
In that sense the number is low, low, low.

So the martial arts are good for discipline.
For lifestyle and health.
And all of us get that,
in spite of our fantasies.

So let’s look a little deeper.
Let’s go spiritually egghead.

According to the Patanjali
you made this universe to have a place to exist.
Heck,
look at the universe,
it’s mostly nothing.
But you made it a long time ago,
so long ago that when you did
you could imagine anything,
and make it real.

Nowadays,
except for a lousy novel or painting,
you can make almost nothing real.
You wish you had a fast car,
a beautiful woman,
a job where you traveled the world
and made zillions of dollars.
Yet,
you don’t have the power of imagination,
you don’t have the discipline behind the imagination,
to make this happen.

This is the truth.
I didn’t say it would make you comfortable.
In fact,
it’s guaranteed to do the opposite.

So you live a life where you have little money and desire more,
where you have a lousy job and desire a good one,
where you are low man on the totem pole.
You pay rent,
you pay tickets,
you listen to the Bushwah coming from your politicians,
and nothing changes.
Death and taxes, baby.

The secret isn’t to have all those things,
it is to have personal responsibility.
You see…
it is not those things that are your prison,
but your desire to have them.
And a lot of other desires, too.

Now,
here is the trick,
if you can give up your desires,
all those things will come to you easily.
You can have anything you want,
you can make anything in the universe real,
if you can just relax,
and find the truth of yourself.

This is the truth.

But how do you give up desires?

Colleges tell you you must desire a position
in a high paying company.

Welfare institutions pay you money
to stifle your initiative,
and to keep your desires strong.

Police give you tickets to keep you
enslaved to the judicial system.

And,
here is the truth…
everybody is in cahoots to keep you…desiring.

Heck,
you can’t turn on the TV,
or the internet,
or even drive down the street,
without being overwhelmed
by ads that feed your desire.

Ads pouring liquor,
inflating your groin with beautiful women,
offering counseling for addictions,
advising you to fight other races,
threatening you with poverty
and disease
and loneliness.

All designed to keep you in the rut,
in the ratrace,
desiring things,
trapping you
even while offering
enlightenment.

The truth is that you won’t become enlightened,
you won’t break free of your desires,
through ANY of these methods.

You will only become enlightened
by achieving personal responsibility.

Here is the question I promised you:
are you the kind of person who seeks
to be entertained?
Or are you the kind of person that seeks?

To be entertained
is to be victim,
to be victim to your desires,
to be manipulated by those who would entertain.

Many people who study the martial arts
do so to be entertained,
to be titillated in their desire
to be tough.
To be unbeatable.
To have a swagger in their walk
to know they can slaughter hordes,
even if that knowledge
is a fantasy.

You can recognize them
because they earn their black belt,
and quit.
They just wanted the belt,
the symbol,
the fantasy.
They desired a meal with no meat.

Here’s the sad thing:
even if a person is a true seeker,
desiring to break free of desire,
he is trapped in inefficient systems.

Here is the truth.
I studied the martial arts in the sixties.
Back then you could tell the difference
between the belts.
Green belts actually had the tools to defeat white belts.
Brown belts actually had the tools to defeat green belts.
Black Belts actually had the tools to defeat brown belts.

But,
as time passed,
other arts came along,
some good…some bad.
the original teachings of karate were diluted.
Tournaments became a key to promotion,
as did ‘how good you could fight.’

When I pass schools these days,
when I look in the windows,
perhaps sit and talk with teachers,
I don’t see the same principles.
People are doing the kicks mindlessly,
or concentrating on how hard they can kick,
instead of what is required for perfecting the kick.

They do the exercise with no idea
of searching for the correct angle, tilt, line of thrust,
and so on.

The forms are no longer repositories of working techniques.
I can’t tell you how many people have told me
they had no idea there were even techniques in the forms.

So how can you achieve enlightenment
if you can’t seek perfection of character
because the method has become so imperfect?

So the truth is that what I am doing
is trying to bring perfection to the martial arts,
by offering education
as to perfection of form,
of motion,
of the mental apparatus behind motion.

And the truth is that the fifty people
who actually read this,
have already ordered courses,
have already started their path to perfection,
are already breaking through the fantasy
and achieving the personal responsibility
that is at the core of enlightenment.

What I would really like,
what I desire,
is for 5,000 people to matrix.
For 50,000,
and more,
to matrix.

Not for the money.
Money doesn’t mean much.
It is just the coin of desire.
But for a better world.
A world not confined by desire,
not ruled by people who sell desire,
who imprison by desire.

The most capable person in the world
the happiest person in the world
is that person who is free
from all desires
but the desire for personal responsibility.

Okey dokey,

Now,
a simple word…
we’re all going to desire some turkey next week,
and then we will make deals with our mind
to go on a diet,
or some other such frivolity.
And,
right after that,
we will stuff ourselves for Christmas,
or some other holiday,
like a pygmy trying to eat The Hulk.

And that is when I start shouting
Hanakwanmass!

Merry Christmas
Happy Hanukah
and Krazy Kwanza

A chance to say howdy and good wishes
to everybody.
Or,
at least insult everybody equally.

Think about this,
if you don’t do something for the fellow
who’s family sits down for a can of beans,
then someday
you will find yourself
in reversed positions.
You will be eating from a can
while those with more ability
will be ignoring you
as they cut into succulent dishes.

So do something.
Toys for tots,
boxes of food to your fire station,
or just helping out the family down the street.

Change the way this world has trained itself.

Fascinating book on how to align keno and make it more powerful.

Thank you for sending me the Master Instructor course so promptly. Below I touch upon some of the things I’ve learned from it, and other observations…

I joined a school of Wing Chun about six months ago, and dropped out two months ago. The reason for this was that the three forms were just rushed through at break-neck speed at the start of each class, and we were expected to learn them with a single glance. It was a definite case of ‘monkey see monkey do,’ but with one of the monkeys being on amphetamines. Thank God that wasn’t the first style I had ever done or I would have walked away from the Martial Arts in disgust, but fortunately I already had good chunks of Karate, various interpretations of Tae Kwon Do, Krav Maga and even Capoeira under my belt, as well as being a TKD instructor myself.

I understand the importance of teaching in small increments that build on one another. I have been doing this since I began teaching in 1987.

I am lucky to have many ‘ideal students’. The main reason I did this course was so that I don’t let them down. And I believe I have learned much from you in this respect.

Each time I show a sequence, I always follow it with an application. In some of the later Hyung, the movements are slightly stylized, so I teach the “Art” and then the real world tweaking that makes it workable.

After teaching students a new move I already usually ask them if they can think of an application. I myself have actually learned from students in doing so.

Due to current class numbers and the range of grades I often leave students to work on small snippets of techniques alone or paired up for a while. It’s more of a logistical necessity than strategy though, but I have taken what you have written about letting students work alone on board.

The four principles are already adhered to in our style of TKD (Australian Freestyle Tae Kwon Do Academy – ‘AFTA’) but currently in a haphazard manner and are rarely, and differently,  named. The same can be said of The Four Powers. They are treated as things students are meant to intuitively learn through practice and experience. This is another thing I will be focusing on more in future as you lay it out in a very logical manner, and I don’t want to keep my students in the dark.

Thank you for your words on introducing Freestyle sparring. This is something else I have now taken on board.

I was dumbfounded at your explanation of the ‘perfect strike’. The few times I have pulled this off, I too felt no impact, and have actually puzzled over why my opponents were lying on the ground. I thought I was unusual in that sense and couldn’t explain it.

Thank you for the elucidation of the principles of physics in relation to the Martial Arts. It is something I have never come across before, but makes a lot of sense. Much food for thought and reflection (and experimentation). The DVDs really drove it home as well.

Look,
the course is easy,
it is filled with things you have not come across,
or,
if you have,
the principles are firmed up and stated correctly,
and ready for you to actually use.

Not a bit of wisdom,
like a line from the Tao,
obscure but…how do you use it?

Rather,
a solid piece of data
related to the real world,
backed by physics,
so you can use and understand
and actually teach!

I tell you,
without the data on this course,
a person is not really a teacher,
he is a money see monkey do-er.

And the real point here is as Jamie says…

I don’t want to keep my students in the dark.

Isn’t that really the point of it all?
Do you want to just monkey seeing and monkey doing?
OR do you want to teach,
to pass on the real martial arts
and really help your students,
and improve the world?

A Strange Martial Arts Fear

What are You Really Afraid Of!

A fellow wrote me a couple of weeks ago,
and told me of an interesting situation.
He has a friend,
and the friend practices martial arts.
Day after day he goes to the dojo,
and receives the lessons of pain and bruises.

Martial Arts are the monkey on his back,
and he firmly convinced
that without pain,
there is no gain.

Interesting viewpoint.
Pain is a warning sign,
means some part of your body is in danger,
change what you are doing.

Of course,
there is the good pain,
going through fatigue,
pushing yourself through hard work outs,
risking a few bruises or a bloody nose
just to learn a little extra.
But…be careful.
Pain is definitely a warning bell.

Now,
that understood,
the fellow who wrote me,
who studies matrixing,
sat down with his friend
and explained the facts of life.
He explained that pain is a warning sign,
and he told this fellow
about how to use energy,
how to move without risking the body,
and all sorts of things.

The fellow was blown away.
It made sense,
and he really started examining what he was doing,
and then he made a rather bizarre statement.
He was afraid that matrixing
would undo what he was learning,
and he was afraid that his instructor
wouldn’t like what he was learning.

He’s being taught to take a good kick in the balls,
but he’s afraid that getting out of the way
will end the experience of being kicked in the balls.
And he’s afraid that the guy who is kicking him in the balls
won’t like that he is learning not to be kicked in the balls.
Think about it.

The Chinese did not have logic,
nor did any of the Asian Martial Arts.
Over the millennium
they devised amazing systems,
systems based on the memorizing of random strings of data.
Sort of like running a two mile maze
to get from A to B,
which,
in truth,
was only a 100 yards apart.

These systems really are amazing,
but,
they are easily replaced by this thing called logic.
Good logic,
interestingly enough,
looks like common sense.
But,
you know common sense,
it’s not common.

Anyway,
the point here is that when you matrix
you are supposed to unlearn things.
You are supposed to take apart these random strings of data,
and put them together in a more logical format.

To be afraid that you aren’t unlearning,
is to be afraid of learning (logic).
Is to be trapped by mysticism.

And,
what is going to happen if you actually unlearn illogic,
and learn real logic?
Are you going to turn to stone?
Is your instructor going to take away your belt?
(you didn’t really learn anything, you fool!)
What?

Anyway,
i wish I had a good end to this tale I have just told you,
but my understanding is that the fellow
went back to systems of pain and randomity.
He didn’t pursue matrixing,
and you know what happens now…
in a few months or years
he will start figuring some of the stuff out
that he was told,
and he will say the incredible
‘We have that in our system.’
He won’t associate what he was told,
with what pops up in his head
in a few months or years.

Heck,
people will probably even be in awe of him,
such brilliance.

Ah, well,
that’s life.

But,

who have the ability to take things apart,
and simply fix them,

Hello again Al,
-I have a story to share with you. One if my close friends has been training in kajukenbo for the past couple years. Every week he goes and literally gets the crap beat out of himself all in the name if “body conditioning”. A week ago he and I were talking and I told him “there is a better way”. I began explaining to him the concept of matrixing and he was intrigued. I worked with him for about an hour and he was amazed at how much easier it was when I explained it (using the principles in the master instructor course). But here is the kicker, after all that he said that he is hesitant to use matrixing because it might undermine his “certified” instructors teachings. Lol. Needless to say I was dumbfounded. Al, I know you offer video testing for the individual courses, but how does the master instructor testing work? What do I need to submit? Please let me know. It would be nice to have some type of “certificate” so people like my buddy Josh will know “it’s ok to listen”. Lol.

Before I get to the qualifications
for the master instructor testing
let me talk about his friend.

The largest problem I have
is people who are blind.
Literally blind.
They have eyes,
but they can’t see.
They have minds,
but they can’t think.

Consider his friend’s position,
‘I am afraid to learn matrixing
because it might threaten what I have already learned.’
And,
even worse,
he’s afraid because,
possibly,
it might ‘offend,’
or undermine his ‘official’ instructor.

Two things come to mind.
Political correctness,
and
fear.

Political correctness because
he is afraid to go against his group,
his leader,
whatever.
Fear because
he says he is afraid.

Can you call yourself a martial artist
if you are afraid?

No.
You can’t.
You haven’t made it yet.

But the thing here is this:
he is afraid to learn.
No matter what the reason,
he is afraid.
And he is going to an ‘official’ school,
and getting beaten up every week.
Which sort of tells you
what schools are really all about.
Beating up people,
instilling fear,
so they can make money.

Go on,
think about that.
There’s gonna be some weird stuff in that thought,
but there is a lot of truth in it, too.

The fact of the matter is
if you are a martial artist,
you should be possessed of a sort of
humble arrogance.

You walk the walk,
but you’re careful in your words,
because you’re walking around people
who are in fear,
who are scared,
and you don’t want to frighten them.

Go on,
think about it.
If you gave a good, ripping
kiai (spirit shout)
in the middle of the mall,
you would have women screaming,
men dropping the pavement,
children crying,
and security would run to arrest you.

Don’t believe me?
I dare you to try it.
I’ve done it,
and that’s EXACTLY what happened.

Simply,
we are living in the midst
of a society that is scared.
Where fake martial artists bully people,
and the true art isn’t much to be seen.

So that is why I congrat to Matthew,
and to all the others
who had the courage to sidestep fear
and actually look at a new thought.
Matrixing.
A way to organize the martial arts,
and jump out of all the BS
and get to where they are going.

Think about it,
here’s a guy getting beat up every week,
and suddenly he finds a better way,
because a Master Instructor takes the time
to sit down and explain the simple facts of life.
And now we have to wait for his friend
to outlast his fear
and take a course himself.

Sigh.
