And, during the Boxer Rebellion, bullets bounced off bodies. And, over the years, most stories have been proven full of crap.

People died in the Boxer Rebellion, victim to bushwah propaganda and fantasy. And, if there are any fellows out there who would like to blunt the tip of my Cold Steel, send me an e-mail and a release form.

However, bushwah aside, there are very real gains to be made from developing iron bodies, fists of steel, and so on.

We all want more effective blocks and strikes, and some of these methods do have incredible value. The question, of course, is which method works the best?

Chinese Kung Fu preach various iron palm potions, if you soak your hands before and after working out, the tissue remains pliable and yet still retains the value of the work out. Thus, you can pound on beans and sand and pellets of iron until your cup runneth over.

My only problem with this method is that I believe in methods which don’t rely on the body, I prefer methods which use the power of the mind. Tai Chi, for instance, speaks of a pliable body which whipcracks with power, soft on the outside, hard on the inside.

I think this is probably preferable to bruise potions, but one would have to spend a lot of time studying the various Tai Chi arts to attain what one is seeking. Be prepared to study Chen for power, Yang for workable posture, Wu for subtle motions, Sun for twisting effects, and so on.

Now, to be truthful, just doing karate forms is going to give you an ‘iron body.’ The problem is that most people do the forms wrong, the actual technology of doing karate forms the correct way has, for the most part, been lost.

But, if you can find the correct way of doing forms, then you can, within the space of about two years, learn how to maximize energy within your body to withstand a strike, and concentrate energy into your hands for striking.

The best way of developing power, not needing esoteric knowledge or magic potions, is simply to set up a stand which supports a brick, and drop the palm on it.

Place a folded wash cloth over it to protect the palm, and don’t strike too hard, and just drop the palm. The trick is to be willing to do it for an hour at a time.

I know people will have other methods, and I am always fascinated by what people prefer in this matter. The things I have said in this article I have formulated over four decades and through a variety of experiences with a variety of arts. So feel free to respond to this article, or to write your own article and offer your own opinion.

Kicks are one of the best and most powerful martial arts weapons you can ever develop. Not only are kicks extremely good for the cardio, giving an instant sweat during a work out, but they are one of the most powerful weapons you can have if you are ever in a fight. After all, most people in the world don’t don’t have the faintest idea as to how to use their legs, and if you do have an idea…you’ve got an instant advantage.

Of course, kicks take a little extra hard work if they are going to develop into something you can be proud of. But if you take your time, train properly and regularly, and do learn the types of kicks in a certain pattern…you can have power busting kicks of the most magnificent order. That said, let’s go over the proper order of how to develop these kicks.

The first kick is to merely stand in one place and do the kick. You don’t have to have a stance, you can do them at a moderate and easy on the body speed, and you can even put your hand on the wall. The idea here is to look at your body andlearn how to make it move to generate efficient and effective and totally destructive kicks.

The second kick is going to be done from stationary stances. Take a kick like a simple front snap kick, low level to begin, higher as you get better, and learn how to apply it from the rear leg while standing in a front stance. Go through all the stances you know, one by one, kicking with the foot you are not standing on.

The third kick is to use the leg which holds the most weight in your stance. This means you kick with the leg supporting the most weight. Again, go through your stances, do them one at a time, but this time figure out how to hop so that the leg you are standing on executes the kick, and the leg you do not have weight on replaces the leg you are standing on.

The fourth kick is to go through and analyze the various directions you can kick in. This is going to require some quick weight shifts and turns of the body, and the ability to think of your body as very light. Simply do the third kick, as described in the last paragraph, but this time execute the kick first to the south, then go back to your stance and do the kick to the east, then the west, then the north.

Now, there are a few things you should remember as you develop your kicks through these four stages. Don’t be one of these people who do a few kicks per side and then quit. Do a couple of hundred kicks, three hundred, maybe even five hundred kicks per kick per leg.

The idea is to develop your legs so that they are as light and easy to use as your hands. So concentrate on learning how to relax while you do your kicks. Soon your kicks will be second nature, light and easy, marvelous little things of quick flick, and yet able to instantly end any fight.

It’s true, a whole new line of pink martial arts gear, and it’s pretty obvious Chuck Norris is coming out of the closet. At the very least, coming clean about a not so honorable period of his life.

Apparently, many years ago, before he became more famous than Rock Hudson, Chuck used to tend bar. He would wear a pink apron and pick fights with anybody who made a remark.

He was young, and he excused such behavior by saying, ‘I just want to rid the world of bigots.’ On the side he would say he was just looking for ways to practice his martial arts.

And, you can believe the above is true because…I read it on the net!

Actually, a fellow wrote into a forum I was on and wanted to read an article on this thing he had heard about Chuck Norris wearing pink and picking fights with drunks, so I thought I would oblige him.

The fact of the matter is that I was learning martial arts, I was a new instructor at the local Kenpo school, when Chuck was making  a name for himself on the martial arts tournament scene.

Every week, it seemed, Chuck was winning a tournament, taking down some of the biggest names, taking home the biggest trophies.

Then, a couple of years later, when I was a black belt and out teaching at my own martial arts school, he became a movie star!

Man, we would flock to the movies, watch him beat holy heck out of uunsavory charcters, and we would cheer!

My particular favorite fight scene of his, more even than the battle with Bruce Lee in ‘The Way of the Dragon,’ is in the martial arts/horror flick ‘Silent Rage.’ There is a reality in the barroom fight with the bikers that is so darn nifty it takes the breath away.

Now, over all the years of Chuck Norris, all the movies and the TV show, I have never heard anything scurrilous said concerning him. In fact, people would always remark how he was the most polite fellow they had ever met, how he went out of his way to be kind to people.

Tough guy? Maybe. Certainly a tough karate fighter.

Bad guy? Not to my knowledge.

Wear pink and beat up drunks? Negative.

In spite of all research, in spite of my sleazy talents as a yellow journalist, I could find no mention of Chuck Norris wearing pink and beating up bigots.

All I heard was good things.

And, the Chuck Norris line of pink Martial Arts gear? Made it up.

Karate, Kung Fu and Aikido Against Voodoo Martial Arts

 Martial Arts: a Destructive Method as Opposed to a Real Method

What you are really trying to do, in martial arts such as Karate and Aikido, and the various types of Kung Fu, is to increase observation while decreasing distance. This is not an exactitude of martial arts practice, but it is the accurate analysis of what we are trying to do.

So you have a beginning martial arts student from one of these classical disciplines, and you launch a slow attack from six feet away. And, as a the months go on, you speed up the attack, and the student gets better and better, faster and faster, and once he reaches a certain point of comfort – that it is comfort is very important, you shorten the distance.

So you launch the attack from three feet away, and you do it slowly, and again, you speed it up over the months. The student gets ‘comfortable’ – remember that word – and you shorten the distance again.

And, you keep shortening the distances until the student is able to stand and observe, not flinch back, and see what is happening, and he is simply becoming more aware.

It’s funny, the martial arts, such as aikido, kung fu, karate, especially the classical ones, are one of the few methods for increasing awareness on this planet. Things like school actually decrease awareness. They jam facts and figures into the head, and it is a rare student, probably a non-existent student, who comes out smarter than when he went in.

But that’s because education doesn’t deal in the real world, except for the sciences, which most people shy away from, and which schools, to remain viable, allow them to. Poor, little darlings (keep writing the check Mommie!)  we’ll get them through something tough, like music appreciation.

Anyway, sorry for that aside, but it is important that you understand the importance of the martial arts on this planet and in your life, so let’s get back to time and distance and awareness.

Awareness is how much of the world you see. And in the martial arts you present a motion, make the student look at it until he is comfortable, then cut the time and make him see more. Cutting the time will enable him to see more.

Now, here is the trick, some of the more modern martial arts, arts based on reality training and so forth, don’t take the time to go through this method, or any other similar working method for increasing awareness.

What they do is increase reaction time.

Now, the student may become more aware in a certain realm, but it is out of his control, he is not able to summon awareness at will, and his body and senses are at risk.

It is the procedure of going to war and depending upon the fact that you are in deathly danger to raise your awareness. It is not a tried and true and scientific method.

It works, but how are you going to teach it without hurting people?

And this method, of forcing increased awareness, of a sort that can be erroneously compared to a real discipline, by putting people in harm’s way usually relies on such terms ‘adrenaline dumping,’ or builds a terminology that is scientific in nature, but psychological in fact. And, the sad thing, psychology is not a science, but merely a voodoo accumulation of whimsical tricks and that sometimes work, if you blunder along long enough. The simple fact of the matter is that psychology, while it has enabled some people under mental stress to go on with their lives, it has never gotten to the bottom of why they weere under stress int he first place, except in the most superficial manner, i.e., some bizarre explanation of wanting to have sex with their mother or father, it’s some one else’s fault, and so on.

The real key here is in the concept of ‘comfort’ under stress.

If your martial art, if  your karate or aikido or kung fu, or even your eclectic discipline, is causing you to relax, to be ‘comfortable,’ when the fist flies towards your face, it is a true art.

And, if you are relying on adrenaline dumping, or touting the fact that you must, simply must try it all out in reality, in a real situation or real fight, to make sure it works, then you are practicing one more savage method, thought up by savages, to retain their savagery.

Savage methods, voodoo training theory, they are a poor excuse for increasing awareness by relaxing, for seeing more of the world simply by applying yourself and making yourself grow through hard work and forcing yourself, I say ‘forcing yourself,’ to see more of the world by learning how to relax under stress.

While the martial arts theory  presented here is pure, it is not practical to apply except in specific exercises; the process of matrixing is the accumulation of many of these specific, and scientific, methods. Further, by being an actual science, and by addressing the actual fact of increasing awareness through such theory as described above, matrixing increases speed of learning by up to ten times, and this in ANY martial art, be it karate, kung fu, aikido, or whatever.

Now,
this is going to be a fun newsletter,
those guys who get tired
of me talking about the zen and the mind
and the neutronics and all that…
here you go,
the ultimate guide to kicking testicles.
I tell ya,
you can go nuts on this one…
(sorry, I had to)

Okay,
you want to end the fight fast.
He’s big,
he’s strong,
he’s mean…
and you need to put him down.
So kick him in the testicles.

The testicles weigh 3 – 5 ounces.
Your leg weighs 20% of your body.
So if you weigh 160 pounds,
a 32 pound leg
could send those little golf balls a long way.
And if you have managed to learn
how to hit with your whole weight…
zowie!

Now,
when you hit those little dainties,
the problem is that they will be smashed up
against the pubic area,
which is to say
the body will absorb the shock.
So you need to kick them
so that they absorb the impact,
and the impact is not absorbed
by the body area around them.

It sounds horrific,
man’s testicles smashed between your foot and his own body,
but most men can actually shake off the pain
and keep coming.

So you use a snap kick.
A snap kick hits and retracts,
relying on speed,
so that the impact is not pushed into the body,
and so that the force stays in the marbles.

But,
we have the problem of mass and speed.
The larger something is,
the more energy it takes to start it in motion,
the slower it is,
and so on.
So you have to practice making your body one unit,
this will increase speed.
And,
you have to ‘empty’ your mind.
This means that you focus your awareness
on your technique so thoroughly,
that no mental distractions
get in the way of the motion.

You are standing,
you snap the foot,
you are standing.
Thousands of times.
Tens of thousands of time.
Eventually the foot snaps like a whip,
the ball of the foot dings the little fellers,
all the weight of the leg stays in them,
and the guy will fall,
turn white,
puke,
and maybe even pass out.

Now,
just make sure that your attacker
isn’t a girl.

The Evolution from Martial to Art

How the Martial Arts Change…

Man, end of the week coming up,
getting ready,

Now,
here’s how it happens.
Somebody learns how to kill somebody.
This is using his bare hands.
Maybe it is to fight against bandits,
or as part of a military mission,
or whatever.
Then,
he practices,
and he lives,
maybe he survives,
and maybe he teaches.

Interested in the killing ways,
this fellow keeps his eyes open,
learns all manner of techniques,
and he practices.
And practices and practices.
Eventually,
he accumulates enough data
to realize a truth about himself.
By accumulating pieces of art,
he puts the arts together,
and
in the process
puts himself together.
At this point the killing techniques
become an art.
A matter of self expression.
Enlightenment.

As this fellow passes his art down,
maybe to his sons,
maybe to paying students,
whatever,
the things he learned and taught
become quite methodical
and more and more people
realize the things he did.

His system becomes a CCS
a Closed Combat System.

It has sufficient breadth and depth,
to always work
if people do it as prescribed.

It is a matter of evolution.
It is a matter of generation after generation
honing the material,
figuring out more and more things
to make that system work.

And,
it is a matter of students
not changing the system,
except in ways that bolster the system.

The few students who don’t complete the art,
or leave with improper understanding,
end up without a complete system,
and they are at risk of adding things to that system
that don’t belong.

That brings us to the modern age.
And students who hoped on a plane in Japan as green belts,
and got off the plane in America
as black belts.

That brings us to students who quit their system
and
because they didn’t have enough to teach,
started adding things indiscriminately.

That brings us to people who destroyed
the evolutionary accumulation
that is what we call a Closed Combat System.

That brings us to an age
where there are so many systems,
the glut of information is so much,
and well meaning instructors try to include everything,
swelling their systems
without regard for how everything fits together.

Go on,
learn Aikido,
then introduce a front punch in the middle of every technique.
There goes the concept of harmony.
There goes Aikido,
no longer a CCS.

Or,
how about taking a system of jujitsu,
and altering every technique for tournament play.
There goes jujitsu.

Or,
or…or…or…
There are actually very few Closed Combat Systems left.
There are actually very few teachers
who understand what has been done to their art.

Think of it like software.
You are learning algebra through a software program,
then,
7th lesson,
you are handed all sorts of material
having to do with growing watermelons.

Man,
would you shake your head or what?

You might obsess on watermelons,
or you might give up algebra,
or you might start teaching people
the necessary algebra
that you just made up
to grow watermelons.

Weird, eh?

Here’s the thing.
There is martial,
which is war,
which is how to kill somebody.

Then,
if a person learns enough,
if he learns enough stuff
so that the whole thing makes sense,
then it becomes an art.

If you know a single art,
you only know one viewpoint,
and you have little chance of learning the whole.

If you learn an art that is corrupted,
bereft of unified concepts,
then you will degrade the art to martial.
You will go from learning to express yourself as a human being
and devolve to espousing tricks to kill people.

So what is the value of being a human being?
Well,
if you are learning tricks to kill,
then you don’t know,
and all I can say is…
learning to express yourself
is higher on the evolutionary chain
than killing people.

Barack Obama to Sign Black Belt Certificate!

How Politics Ruins the Martial Arts

So how would you like your black belt certificate signed by Barack Obama? Cool, eh? I mean, the president signing your black belt certificate!

Except, you see, the president doesn’t know Karate. Or AIkido. Or Tai Chi Chuan or Krav Maga or…he doesn’t know ANY martial Art! He merely signed your martial arts promotion so you woujld vote for him!

Now, we know this is satire, except, let’s look at a little history behind the martial arts satire.

In Korea, back in the forties and fifties, the martial arts flourished. Some of the most powerful Karate int he world came out of that era. Then a fellow name of Choi Hong Hi decided that Korea needed its own martial art. So he invented Taekwondo. It wasnt’ very good, as evidenced by three facts.

One, the forms were changed after that, better forms were made.

Two, a lot of people wouldn’t go with the new system, they felt that it wasn’t as good as the old.

Three, in Korea Taekwondo is taught to people as sort of a baby system, and the real martial arts are taught later on, and, I hate to say it, in a lot of cases, only to people of the Korean race.

It’s true. A rank form of racism. In the martial arts.

But you will have a hard time proving it, the Koreans certainly won’t opt to it.

But, that is just one instance of a martial art being changed for political reasons. Something that really worked being thrown out (or reserved, in this case) while a lesser art is foisted upon people to create ‘nationalistic pride,’ among other things.

In communist countries, a few decades ago, only the military, or communist party officials and their family, were allowed to learn Martial Arts. Another instance of martial arts by politics.

Let me make a point here: in this country there a LOT of people who think martial arts should be regulated, and this goes down even to the selection of techniques that is taught.

And, here is the cruelty behind this bonehead reasoning…these people propose regulation so that the government won’t regulate us.

Well, you know my opinion. As the owner of Monster Martial Arts I believe in going to a flesh smacking dojo and eschewing ALL politics. And, when you have your basics in, heck, as soon as you start, you should start exploring other options, and ordering a course from me, testing in the martial arts by video with me, is ABSO-FRIGGIN-LUTELY free of politics.

It’s the knowledge that’s important here, not who signs your certificate, or whetehre you have filled in the forms in triplicate, or whether you show proper depth of bow to some bonehead who stopped learning martial arts a decade ago, when he figured out he could get people to bow down and throw money at him.

Just my opinion of course. You’re certainly free to go get your black belt certificate signed by BarackObama…heck, it’s not like politics could really hurt the martial arts, right?

The Real Truth of Kiai in Martial Arts

Is Kiai really just ‘Spirit Shout?’

All too often people describe it as a “spirit yell”, but this only scratches the surface, and it is a horrible translation. If we look at the word in kanji, you will see that it is made up 2 characters.  The first is Ki ( 気 ), this is the character for energy, whether you call it chi, qi, or prana.  The second is Ai ( 合 ) meaning harmony. Some of you may notice something here, those are the same 2 character as Aikido ( 合気道 ) but in a different order.  Thus “fighting yell” doesn’t enter into a proper translation.

So, a kiai, isn’t a fighting scream, but rather any sound that brings your energy into harmony with the situation.  Nobody ever talks about it anymore but this could be a sob, a laugh, a sigh, or scream to bring all your force to bear in a fight.

Since nobody ever has to explain how to laugh or cry, let us turn our attention to the application of “bringing the force to bear in a fight” or spirit yell.

If you visit enough other places you will no doubt see people, saying the word “kiai” or “kiup” (the Korean pronunciation) with no more enthusiasm than a yawn.  This is useless, utterly useless.

Kenpo says there are 5 reasons to do a Kiai

1. make sure you are breathing when you are executing a technique
2. distract your opponent
3. attract attention
4. tighten your muscles, thus protecting your body.
5. bring power to your technique.

Numbers 2, 3, and 5 will not work AT ALL if you are wimpy and quiet.

When you watch the old martial arts movies, you don’t see people giving a kiai, like a child who is in trouble being asked to confess.  It is loud, bold and proud.

More than once  people tell me “it is embarrassing to scream”, to which my response is “SO WHAT!  If I have to defend myself, I will give a kiai, and if the bad guy laughs at me, I don’t care.  Regardless how they respond, whether it is shock, laughter, or they turn to run, that is going to give me my opening”.

Did Bruce Lee care about what people thought? No!  He said (paraphrasing here) “every technique should have a life of its own, part of that is giving it a unique sound.”  This is why he was making sounds, that even other martial artists thought, were weird.

A good kiai comes from the Dan Tien (Tanden), if it helps, think of it as coming from the diaphragm. In theater, they call this “projecting” so the people in the nosebleed seats can hear you.  To go along with what Bruce said, it can be any sound, but “kiai” is not an Onomatopoeia, so please don’t use that as your sound.  Even the 1970s corny movie “hi-ya” is less annoying than “kiai”.

My Sensei says “if a Kiai is done correctly, you don’t go horse”.  This is true, but if you aren’t doing a proper kiai now, it will likely take a bit of practice to figure out how to be all “heavy metal concert” on it, without hurting your voice.

Was Shaolin the Original Art?

I had some spare time
so I wrote a website.
It’s about Shaolin.
The point about it being…
was Shaolin the original art?

Now,
every country has its art,
but they are mostly based on Shaolin.

And,
before Shaolin there was fighting,
but Shaolin elevated it to art,
to enlightenment.

So,
maybe Shaolin wasn’t the first,
but it was probably the most important.

I was pretty lucky in my selection of Karate,
I happened upon a very pure art,
from before Funakoshi.
And,
the interesting thing is,
I was pretty lucky in my study of Shaolin.

I explain a bit about it.

Now,
here’s the thing.
I did Karate,
and I matrixed it,
and it was pretty messed up.
But you do matrixing first,
and then it all makes sense,
and then the classical stuff starts to really make sense.
Becomes advanced studies.
I found the same thing happened in Shaolin.

Man,
I tried to figure it all out,
studied Wing chun,
Ton Toi,
a bunch of other stuff,
but it didn’t seem to come together for me.
Then I met a fellow name of Richard Armington.
Richard had studied with Arthur Lee in Hawaii,
and it was real old school.
So we went through the forms,
and,
tell the truth,
everything was really spread out,
didn’t make sense.
But I could feel the power of it.
But,
you know me,
I didn’t want to spend a dozen years,
so I looked for the one thing that would grab me,
that would make sense.
Look,
it’s like when you walk into a room,
you look for a rack to hang your coat on.

Without that rack,
everything goes on the floor.
Gets tangled up.
So I was looking for something,
a concept,
a technique,
a way to twist the whole thing
so it would matrix in my mind.
So it would fall into order,
would make sense.

In one of the forms,
I think it was called ‘jing mu,’
though i am hazy on translations and spelling and such,
but i think it meant butterfly.

And it was light and flitting,
covered directions in a very matrix way,
and I had found my rack.
I started hanging concepts off it.
All the concepts that were spread out
all over the place in Fut Ga,
and I could now make sense out of them.
And,
odd thing,
I found that,
as I explored the form in directions,
that for every different direction I stepped,
a concept worked.
Well,
that made sense.
Different geometries – different concepts.

So I reworked the Fut Ga
in a more methodical and logical way.

The forms fit two different footworks,
they emulated a bunch of different animals,
and the techniques,
as you go through the forms,
advance logically.

So instead of the Shaolin concepts radiating all over the place,
they could be done one, two, three fashion.

Made it REALLY easy to learn.

And,
some of the bad habits Shaolin picked up over the years,
I was able to delete them.

For instance,
just to mention one,
have you ever noticed how,
in the back stance,
the back ankle is scrunched,
and the front foot is way out there,
the heel lifted up?
That stance doesn’t work.
There is no mobility,
and the front foot isn’t able to kick,
and the thing just doesn’t work.
So I raised the stance slightly,
turned the foot in slightly,
and the thing works.

Is it Shaolin like you see?
With the guy all scrunched down and looking…Shaolin-y?
No.
But it works,
and I care about workability MUCH more
than I care about looks.
And,
I question whether,
several hundred years ago,
the founders of Shaolin did their stances that way.
Heck,
they had to fight,
not pose.
And here’s something to think about,
the Shaolin was destroy more than once.
So the art was rebuilt more than once.
Who’s to say it was rebuilt correctly?

The current Shaolin,
I am talking PRC
(People’s Republic of China)
killed off or chased out
all the Shaolin stylists
as part of their great cultural revolution.
Then,
when they realized they could make money,
they rebuilt it.
But they didn’t use martial artists,
they used physical education coaches.
And you can see mistakes.
You can see physical education,
but mistakes in body alignment.
You can see frantic workmanship,
beautiful workmanship,
but not an art that is based on function,
on self defense.

Hope i didn’t step on two many feet out there,

if I did,

Practicality of Combat Style Karate Kata, and…

…What a Modern Classical Karate Kata Looks Like

With the advent of Krav Maga, Systema, Sanshou, Jeet Kune Do and MMA people don’t fight like they used to, and one has to examine the functionality of Combat Karate Katas.

People are faster, more vicious, more likely to use power base kicks rather than simple jab type front kicks, and worse they like to go to the ground.

What does this mean for the traditional combat style kata?  Does this mean they are useless?

Personally, I don’t think so.  However, other people do.

While I do not suppose I can speak for him,  Kancho Joko Ninomiya, the founder of Enshin appears to feel that kata are necessary but the old ones don’t quite cut it in the modern world.

If you are unfamiliar with Enshin, here is a quick run down on it.  Kancho Joko Ninomiya won the 1974 All Japan Karate Championships (a Kyokushin bare-knuckle full contact championship).  Then he moved to America and founded his own karate style, using his own bare-knuckle tournament to evolve the style.

When he started to create his own kata, he kept the traditions of kata, but made them fit the new style.  He also didn’t bother with fancy names, instead the names are things like “shiro obi no kata”, or “ao obi no kata”, literally they are “white belt kata” and “blue belt kata” respectively.  However, they include things that were heavily used in Kyokushin, but don’t exist in the original katas like Sanchin and Seisan, things like boxing style jab/cross combinations.

So, this is what a modern kata looks like, and following that are its bunkai (application).
