I was studying Kenpo Karate back in 1967. I lived for Kumite (karate freestyle), and I thought that breaking was a subsection of martial arts reserved for the truly great.

I was excited, then, when I heard that a special board breaking seminar was going to be put on at my school.

On the appointed day we lined up and bowed in. There were about twenty of us, and we stared at the huge pile of boards that were waiting for our hardened fists and excited souls.

The head instructor, a slight fellow name of Rod, came to the head of the class and began telling us the things we needed to know. We learned the theory of how to tighten the fist, how to strike through the board, and how to have total and utter confidence!

One of the fellows, Jeff, raised his hand.

“Sir? Rod? Can you break a board with your head?”

Rod smiled, “Yes, but you need to practice hard, make sure you understand all the things you need to before you try such a thing.”

Shortly afterwards we adjourned to another room to continue the seminar.

Jeff, however, was not with us.

Rod was going over how you have to hold the board, how you have to protect your fingers and brace the arms, when, suddenly, there was a sharp and loud THONK! from the other room.

Nobody said anything, we just held our breath and waited, and, suddenly, Jeff appeared at the doorway.

He was standing slanted. He walked off kilter across the room and knelt at the end of the line. Even his zazen was off kilter.

He was giving his total attention to Rod, however, so the seminar went on.

We broke a lot of boards that day, made a lot of kindling for winter, and at the end, everybody bowing to Rod and talking excitedly, Jeff made his way to the front of the class.

“Sir? Rod? Can you break a board with your head?”

He had no idea that he had ever asked that question before.

Why Did Ed Parker Make Five Styles of Kenpo?

The Five Kenpos of Ed Parker

The first Kenpo of Ed Parker was actually Okinawan Karate. One can see the forms in the string of techniques in his first book. Forms were actually not taught, except, I believe, for Naihanchi and maybe one or two others.

The second version was a blend of Karate and jujitsu. This version was originally taught in a small temple in Japan.

The third Kenpo of Mr. Parker was actually created by James Wing Woo, a kung Fu stylist who taught Ed’s class, and helped him write a book while he lived in Pasadena. This was the version of kenpo from which many of the forms were originated.

The fourth kenpo was a reworking and renaming of the 3rd version.

The fifth and final Kenpo was created by Ed Parker to replace the earlier styles of Kenpo. He was proud of the fact that it actually wasn’t kenpo anymore.

Now, this all stated, one has to ask why there were so many styles. The answer is simple, Ed was trying to simplify and make sense out of the mess.

The fact of the matter is that the martial arts are random sequences of motions. This causes the art to be hard to learn, and hard to apply. It is simply hard to memorize to the point of intuition so much data.

Ed was trying to simplify and make sense out of the thing so that students could learn faster (among other reasons).

Unfortunately, he failed.

He came close, but his efforts were still comprised of random sequences of motion.

Each method he designed or compiled or whatever was built upon the ashes of the previous, tried to include new concepts and theories he had come across, and does not make summation of kenpo, or the martial arts.

Was he wrong for doing what he did? Not at all. His work was ground breaking and innovative, he just lacked the logic and perspective to bring it all together.

Does it mean that the kenpo you are studying is wrong?

Nope.

For Kenpo is a manifestation of knowledge, and each person contains the knowledge in his own unique way.

Though Ed failed to make the art a science, it is still an art, and it is still whatever people make it.

Karate Kicking Drills for REAL Power!

Kicks are one of the best and most powerful martial arts weapons you can ever develop. Not only are kicks extremely good for the cardio, giving an instant sweat during a work out, but they are one of the most powerful weapons you can have if you are ever in a fight. After all, most people in the world don’t don’t have the faintest idea as to how to use their legs, and if you do have an idea…you’ve got an instant advantage.

Of course, kicks take a little extra hard work if they are going to develop into something you can be proud of. But if you take your time, train properly and regularly, and do learn the types of kicks in a certain pattern…you can have power busting kicks of the most magnificent order. That said, let’s go over the proper order of how to develop these kicks.

The first drill is to merely stand in one place and do the kick. You don’t have to have a stance, you can do them at a moderate and easy on the body speed, and you can even put your hand on the wall. The idea here is to look at your body andlearn how to make it move to generate efficient and effective and totally destructive kicks.

The second drill is going to be done from stationary stances. Take a kick like a simple front snap kick, low level to begin, higher as you get better, and learn how to apply it from the rear leg while standing in a front stance. Go through all the stances you know, one by one, kicking with the foot you are not standing on.

The third drill is to use the leg which holds the most weight in your stance. This means you kick with the leg supporting the most weight. Again, go through your stances, do them one at a time, but this time figure out how to hop so that the leg you are standing on executes the kick, and the leg you do not have weight on replaces the leg you are standing on.

The fourth drill is to go through and analyze the various directions you can kick in. This is going to require some quick weight shifts and turns of the body, and the ability to think of your body as very light. Simply do the third kick, as described in the last paragraph, but this time execute the kick first to the south, then go back to your stance and do the kick to the east, then the west, then the north.

Now, there are a few things you should remember as you develop your kicks through these four stages. Don’t be one of these people who do a few kicks per side and then quit. Do a couple of hundred kicks, three hundred, maybe even five hundred kicks per kick per leg.

The idea is to develop your legs so that they are as light and easy to use as your hands. So concentrate on learning how to relax while you do your kicks. Soon your kicks will be second nature, light and easy, marvelous little things of quick flick, and yet able to instantly end any fight.

Go on, Karate kicks, Taekwondo kicks, Kung Fu or even Aikido or Tai Chi or whatever, do what i told you on this page and watch your kicking power grow and grow and GROW!

Let them know what they got them selves into.
Incidentally,
what I am about to tell you
I wrote in a letter to a fellow.
His question was that he wasn’t sure what he was getting,
he was studying,
but matrixing didn’t always make sense.
So I thought he needed an overview.
And here it is for you.

Before we get into it,
however,

concerning an overview of matrixing.

Hi Michael, glad you are having fun with the matrixing…probably an overview would help you out at this point.

The one sticking point for most people is that they have a hard time viewing the body as a machine. This is because if the body is a machine, then what are they? And the answer: they are awareness, a point in space ‘giving off’ light. Or ‘shedding awareness.’

This point, of being a point of awareness, is actually the subject of neutronics. I’ll attach a booklet (prologue) for you to better understand that subject.

The second thing to remember, in this overview, is the example I give of Eddie Rickenbacker (pg 102 of Matrixing: The Master Text).

Eddie visualized his plane on a line through space, and he had to handle incoming forces, so he visualized himself as a center of a sphere, and then came up with solutions for every angle of attack into that sphere.

Doing this for the body (the machine that you occupy, or ‘drive’) you come up with the rules of operation for the body. There are five specific rules for operating the body efficiently. These are:

Breath, relax, sink downward, align the body, coordinate the body in motion

After these five rules for maximizing potential of personal motion of the body, which are applied through the practice of form, you get into analyzing the forces and flows (directions) of incoming ‘objects’ (fists, feet, etc.). This is where you begin to construct matrixes of blocks, matrixes of ranges, and so on.

And this is where you construct specific theories of art. Karate as a defense, or Aikido, or tai chi, and so on. Each art describes a specific range, or angle of motion, and is defined by a specific concept or concepts.

Okay, so that is the overview. But, don’t worry if matrixing doesn’t ‘burst inside your head.’ Some people, a very few people, get a blast of enlightenment, everything makes sense, they see the whole picture, etc. But most people just have to compile the art, piece by piece, and settle for becoming more and more competent, until they just know everything.

There are times when I have had ‘mystical insight,’ where everything was like a message from God, a vision, and I understood everything. That was because I had accumulated enough data, and it suddenly, in a moment, made sense.

But other times I would just work and work for a few years, would experience no enlightenment, but found that I had developed superior abilities in various areas.

In Karate I had a moment of profound vision, the world turned gold, and I understood. But in Pa Kua I never experienced that, but did find, after a few years of walking the circle, that my legs were like oaks, yet filled with a lightening like energy.

So don’t worry if things don’t suddenly open up for you, just keep going, settle for the slow but sure knowledge of abilities gained over time. Just realize that you keep accumulating data, until you have the knowledge, until there are no more questions.

Think of where you were before you started the martial arts, and where you are now, and realize that some day you will be looking back to where you are now, and be somewhere very, very advanced compared to now.

Just remember, the martial arts are a BIG field. But the concepts are simple. And the process is actually one of simply gathering and arranging data until everything makes sense and there isn’t any more mystery; it is a process of isolating the simplicities and then applying them to the larger field of chaos that is the accumulated martial arts.

Four Steps to Winning a Karate Fight

Four Simple Martial Arts Fighting Steps

To be victorious in a fight it is necessary to make the decision to win the fight. Without that decision, simply, there is no way you are going to win. Thus, you have to practice making the decision, and then implement a plan so that the decision becomes reality.

kenpo fighting bookThere are five decisions you must make to back up the decision to win a fight. This combat strategy is found in every fight. This is the strategy you must understand and master if you are going to be able to deliver the original decision.

The first decision, and the most important, is that there is going to be a fight. Interestingly, you don’t have to get in a fight if you refuse to make the decision to be in a fight. Even if the other person has made a decision, unless you agree with his decision, you don’t have to fight.

The second decision involves distances involved in the fight. You should understand , at this point, that a fight is going to collapse in distance. And, you must understand that if you can control this distance, and even change collapsation into expansion at will, you can control and win a fight.

The third decision has to do with which side of the bodies the fight is going to occur on. One out of eight people being left handed, a fight will usually occur with right hand, and the bodies will turn to fit the hands, and the fight will be on that side. If you can control that decision, as to which side the fight will be on, then you are going to win that fight.

The fourth decision is going to be whether you are on the inside or the outside. What this means is that if he punches with a right hand, you must block/push/whatever so that his right hand misses you on the outside, and you see the inside of his wrist. And, if he punches with the right, you must block/push/whatever so that his right hand misses you on the inside, and you see the outside of his wrist.

There are other decisions in a fight, there can be millions of decisions, literally. Do you wish the fight to be conducted at a specific distance, such as foot, or fist, or elbow, or whatever. Or, do you wish to control the decisions so that the fight collapses or expands in distance as you wish, from foot to elbow to knee to throw to fist to foot to whatever, your choice, and so on.

The point, however, is that to control all the other decisions, you must control the first four decisions. If you can understand and create drills to back up these decisions, then you can win any fight. Of course, as I said in the beginning, the first decision, that you are going to win that fight, is the most important.

Hey de hi hi! Been just putting in articles for blogs,  but I have the time to do it right, if you have the time to read it right. So uncross your eyes and get ready to rock and unroll.

Been into time lately, realized it ran backwards three decades ago, figured out what it meant the other day.

People who study history are reading what is written by the conqueror. They are getting what the historians feel like blabbin’ about. They are contributing to history by going forward.

When you study the martial arts, however, you are trying to go backwards to the original concepts, find out where the art came from, what part of your soul it tweaks.

Lose your reaction time. Stop thinking. Be.

Easy, eh? Well, it is so easy it is hard. Haven’t seen any schools of martial arts that address this, or try to do it, except in the most by the way method, or through passed down stuff they don’t understand and so can’t really apply.

I, however, obsess on it. To lose your reaction time, to lose your mind, to exist in the now, that is what it is all about.

Master martial arts Instructormartial arts instructorAnd, now that we have put childish attitudes aside, we can ask ourselves the question, how can you tell if a martial arts instructor knows his stuff. Choosing an instructor, after all, is one third the game in becoming a good martial artist ourselves. The other two necessities are whether the system is any good, and whether the student is any good. The first quality is whether he can communicate. Does he stand off and pronounce from on high, or does he grin right into your face and tell you what he thinks. Cheerful is best, but even abrasive is okay, if he is really talking to you. Another quality is whether he can get you to understand what he is saying. When he says square, do you see square, or something else? This is especially important when one attempts to share theory that can get heady and esoteric. Then there is the question of whether he actually knows anything. Yes, he may be a grand poobah, and know a thousand techniques, but can he tell you how and why they work? Is he a monkey see monkey do instructor, or one that knows the real reasons why the martial arts work or don’t work. Now we come to the all important question, can he beat people up. Okay, I don’t mean that the way it sounds. But your instructor should be able to defend himself adequately against real attackers. Now here’s one that’s going to sneak up on you. Is he too willing to defend himself? Unfortunately, many martial arts instructors breed an attitude which pulls in fights, and it is better to teach people how to fight so that they don’t ever have to fight. Okay, that is my take on it all. Argue if you want, but the fact is an instructor should be able to communicate, have something to communicate, and not encourage people to fight no matter what. Confidence, competence, and all the other martial arts related virtues are their own reward. How to Go Beyond Fighting in the Martial Arts

The Point of Martial Arts Fighting

The number one reason people get into the martial arts is fighting. Everybody has had that bully in their background. Everybody would like to feel bigger, stronger, free from the threat of violence.

About the first and only science of the martial arts…matrixing.

Now, to be truthful, if you just want to fight, I recommend going to a boxing club for a few months. You’ll get in shape, you’ll learn what it feels like to get hit, and you’ll learn how to hit back.

If you think there is something more than fighting, however, then you must look to the martial arts. You must believe that the world isn’t just a struggle for survival, but that there is a point to it all. You must believe in yourself as a human being, and that you can actually ascend to higher levels of awareness.

First you must build a structure for containing the knowledge in the martial arts. This is why you do forms; this is something that boxing does not have. This is the mechanism which will elevate you.

Second, you must achieve discipline. I don’t mean the discipline where you get a belt on the bottom as punishment. I mean the discipline of doing something every day because you love doing it, and for no other reason.

Third, you must study a system that has logic. The reason for this is one of expedience. You don’t want to spend decades sorting through the bushwah. You want to get there while you are still young.

Fourth, you must not stop. Drill those basics patiently, open your eyes and look. You must not just work out, you must invest awareness into your art.

The Martial arts, you see, are a manifestation of the spirit. It is your awareness filtered through your own logic and spread across the heavens. Life is heaven, you know, but only if you can isolate the art of your soul and show it to the universe.

How to See Behind Your Head with Karate Head Trick!

A Karate trick to see behind your head. Hmmm. Are you ready? you’re gonna have to change the way you think to get this one. And, I hate to say it, there are going to be a lot of people that scoff and turn away. They just can’t grasp it, and it even frightens them.

And, I should say, this trick works for most karate, kung fu, aikido, tai chi, or other martial arts systems.

It doesn’t work for MMA, or systems that take their joy and training methods from street fighting motivations. Sorry. Just doesn’t work.

So you do your forms. That’s the trick. But let me explain.

To understand you must have awareness.

Awareness is an interesting fellow.

Perception, you see, is observing something through the body. Through the eyes or the ears, the skin touch or the nose smell.

Perception can’t tell you what is behind your head. Eyes point in the wrong direction. Ears tilted forward. Nose on front. Got it?

But, you can be aware behind your head. It is like a sense of radar. You just feel.

But the trick is in realizing that you aren’t eyes and ears, you are awareness. Awareness is what looks through the eyes and ears and other perceptic tools.

Awareness, and here is where a few people are going by by, is a point in all directions. It radiates.

It tends to group of the eyes, however, and the ears, and other points of body sensation.

But it is not body. It is…that which is you.

Cut off your arms and you are still you. Cut off your body, you are still you. Cut off your head…you are still you. An awareness. An awareness without a body, mind you, but still an awareness.

So you do your form, and here’s the interesting thing: you can do your form until you are moving it without muscular exertion. In other words, you think and it moves. You become aware and it moves.

Unfortunately, most systems don’t practice this. They build the muscles, increase reaction time, and never realize that moving the body has nothing to do with those things. Moving the body has to do with the Awareness that owns it having a thought about the body moving.

So most martial arts never tap into the true potential. They build muscles, but not awareness. What a heresy. What a sacrilege. What a waste.

Anyway, if you go to monstermartialarts.com, start looking into the matrixing thing, especially the Master Instructor Course, you will come across the rules for using the body the right way, the way that uses awareness, and therefore liberates awareness.

If you don’t, then you can spend a lifetime and never access the real you.

Revenge of the Karate Ball Kickers!

I had been learning karate for a few months, and one day a girl showed up.
Okay, that’s fine with me. This was back in the sixties, it was the stone age of Karate in America, and a time of serious bra burning.
So this girl matches up, and the first thing she does is kick a guy between the legs.
That’s cool. Except it was a little hard.
Guy fell over, turned white. He was wearing a cup, but it still hurt. I mean, she really kicked hard.
So, next time she matches up, first technique out of the shoot, she kicks her partner in the groin.

And, a third guy falls, and the rest of us got it.
For several matches we dodged, backed up, tried to avoid her lightening kick.
Some of us made it, and some of us didn’t.
Then, an interesting thing happened.
One of the guys kicked back.
Bang!
Right between the legs.
I know, girls don’t have anything, right?
But doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt. We are talking about a sensitive area.
And, suddenly, it was open season.
Snap kick! Kiai!
And that poor girl didn’t know what hit her.
She had to have gone home bruised and sore.
She didn’t cry, but she suddenly learned a lesson.
Be gentle.
Later classes she was. Got to be real fun to fight with her.
And, what is the lesson here?
Use your weapons gently.
