Outlaw Karate Training Manual Re-issued!

Outlaw Karate Gets a Face Lift!

‘Outlaw Karate: The Secret of the One Year Black Belt,’ was one of the first books on Matrixing. Actually, it was written before matrixing became ‘officialize.’

This is the first book to put forth the concept that people could actually earn a real Black Belt in Karate in a year of less.

This new edition includes a glossy cover. The original material,  five star rated on Amazon, is intact.

The glory of this book is that it goes belt by belt, describing all the experiences, detailing what the student should be going through, and showing all the forms and applications. Thus, the reader has a much better chance of getting through the material without error; it is actually possible to get to a Black Belt within one year.

The book is based on the author’s synthesis of two martial arts, ‘Kang Duk Won’ and ‘Kwon Bup.’ All duplicate material has been discarded, along with fluff material such as poser techniques, unworkable techniques, and so on.

The result is an extremely hard core, street workable system.

The book includes detailed instructions on such items as:

  • how to create power
  • six ways to translate a block into totally different techniques
  • promotional requirements for every belt
  • what a student goes through on each belt level and why
  • the actual written tests for each belt
  • and TONS more.

The book is 166 pages with 212 images. In includes the complete system, with all the forms, applications, and methods of freestyle.

Home Intrusion on Christmas, and the Martial Arts

Newsletter 844

I was Attacked on Christmas!

HANAKWANMASS!
And a great work out to you!

Yes,
the martial arts killed Christmas.
In fact,
it was me,
with my martial arts
that killed Christmas.
Killed it dead.
Dead a poisoned rat in a trap dropped in a well.
Here’s how it happened.

new martial arts book

click on the cover!

Back in 1974,
I had just gotten my Black Belt.
I was in phenomenal shape,
the martial arts had turned on
all sorts of abilities for me.
I had a sixth sense open up,
I could feel when people were going to do things,
I could sense things around me,
I moved through the world
a warrior unbound.

My wife and I lived in a small house in Redwood City.
There was an upstairs and a downstairs.
It was so compact
that the bathroom was under the stairs.

One night I awoke,
felt the need to relieve myself.
Half asleep,
stumbling through the dark,
I descended the stairs.
I turned through the living room
and headed for the bathroom.

Suddenly,
a shape rushed at me!
It was dark,
but I could feel the motion.
I spun into a classical move,
and chopped with perfect form.
The intruder crashed against the wall.
One chop,
and he was down and out!
Now that’s good martial arts,
I thought,
and I turned on the light.

The Christmas tree lay a ruin.
Every ornament was flung from the tree,
little bulbs lay in shards,
scattered across the floor

The lights,
needless to say,
no longer worked.

The cheery, little angel
that had topped the tree
was smacked against the wall
and lay in ruins.

Half asleep,
I had snagged the Christmas tree cord with a foot,
and pulled the ‘intruder’
down upon myself.

Still,
I had defended myself rather adequately,
don’t you think?

I remember a time in an Aikido class,
when the instructor had talked about
using the sixth sense to protect oneself,
but not being so violent,
that Grandma had to worry,
when she walked up behind you
and tapped you on the shoulder.

Well,
I understood that one.
And I understood that I had a lot more to go,
a lot more to learn,
past black belt.

Heck,
getting a black belt is just the start.
That’s like graduating from high school,
and there’s all sorts of college ahead of you,
advanced studies in rare fields.

A lot to look forward to.

Unfortunately,
there are those that quit the martial arts
after getting their black belt.
They have nothing to look forward to.
Or at least didn’t,
until the Matrixing courses came out.

Now,
even if it’s been a few years
since you worked out,
you can jump back in the game,
study those rare fields of knowledge.
Learn Shaolin,
figure out this ‘chi’ business,
study weapons.

And you can do it logically,
without all the mystical bullstuff
that infects most martial arts.

Well,
up to you.
It is Christmas
(HanaKwanMass)
however,
so you might think about getting yourself
a nice present.
A present like a whole martial art.
How about Shaolin?

And don’t forget to be politically correct.
Don’t say Merry Christmas,
it might offend somebody.
Instead,
be socially responsible and say Happy…

BULLPUCKEY!

Say Merry Christmas if you want!
And the heck with people
who object to a well wishing!

In fact,
say
HANAKWANMASS!
Offend everybody!

It’s the only way to go!

Now,
HanaKwanMass to all,
and to all…
A HAPPY WORKOUT!

Update on Monkey Boxing Video Lessons!

Monkey Boxing Update

Excellent!
You survived Thanksgiving,
now all you have to do is make it through Xmas!
Or,
Hanakwanmass,
as I call it.
Remember,
the best way to make it through anything,
is to work out every single day.
Nobody can beat a guy (or gal)
who is in top condition!

monkey boxing video course

Click on the Monkey to find out about Monkey Boxing!

Okay,
time for an update on Monkey Boxing.

Before I start,
let me say that the main focus of this newsletter
is matrixing.
Monkey Boxing will come up every couple of weeks,
but,
believe it or not,
there are a few people who don’t want personal lessons
from a guy with 50 years experience,
they don’t want to tap into the mind
that created matrixing and neutronics.

And,
believe it or not,
that’s okay,
I have nothing against people
who choose to remain ignorant.
Good people, them,
and future customers.

To them I recommend Matrixing.
Good place to start
before you jump into my world.

So,
that said,
Monkey Boxing is doing excellent!

About 20 videos were released this month.
They deal with the whole spectrum of Monkey Boxing,
from warm ups to kicks
to the incredible ‘Rolling Fists’ exercise,
to techniques and forms…
lots of stuff.

And here’s something to think about…
everything has my stamp on it,
been matrixed up the yin yang,
very scientific,
very thorough,
very intuitive,
but…
nobody has ever seen,
except maybe through a quick mention,
or an obscure video,
such things as
‘The Circle of Blocks’ (Monkey Boxing Style)
Monkey in a Box
Circle of Blocks and attacks
The Flower of Blocks
Grab Hands
The Monkey Blast

Never been seen,
or almost never been seen.

Monkey in a Box will build your shoulder strength
and help flexibility
like gangbusters.

Grab Hands is a VERY heavy zen drill.
BUT…you have to do it right.
Here,
you see it right.

The Flower of Blocks will build hand speed,
and leg strength,
if you do it while in a horse stance,
like nobody’s business.

The Circle of Blocks opens up total new vistas of ability.

These things haven’t been seen,
or only briefly referenced or described.

They are…NEW!

New martial arts.
Stuff developed for Monkey Boxing,
and never been seen in ANY other martial art.

Something to think about.

And,
that all said,
the coming months are going to be fantastic.

I’m writing a complete book,
a freebie for the Monkey Boxers.

Dozens and dozens of unique and original
(which is to say ‘never been seen’)
exercises and drills.

The frustrating thing about all this is that
I am gearing this off a real class I am teaching.
People from the ground up,
very little experience,
so I jump around.

I’m writing a Monkey Boxing book,
(freebie to subscribers)
and the book will help in this.
It will be ready in a month or so,
and provide a massive overview
and work out schedule.

But you will be picking and choosing,
and trying to make sense out of this for a couple of months.

The good news is that in jumping around
I am referencing things
that haven’t been seen for a LONG while.

Grab Hands,
for instance,
you might have actually seen,
but never the martial arts side of it,
never the zen side of it.
And it is TOTAL dynamite.
Calms the mind,
gets rid of twitches and flinches,
and zeroes you in
like a lazier guided rocket!

Okay,
enough of the good news,
let me give you some bonus good news.

Every month will be archived once past.
BUT,
I can’t sell an empty page to somebody
on the first few days of the next month.
So,
the first week of the month,
the videos from last month will remain up.
After the first week,
the previous month will get archived,
but,
for that first week,
if you are smart…
sign up and the previous month is still there.
Watch,
download,
save your own personal copy,
(but, please, don’t give my stuff away).

What this means is that you will have a window,
about 7 days,
when you can actually get two months for the price of one.

Remember,
once a month is archived
you will have to purchase separately.

Subscribers will,
of course,
have access to every month since they began subscribing.

Okay,
that’s it,
back to Matrixing next time,

AND GET READY FOR HANAKWANMASS!

Remember,
a work out every day of the month
is better than anything
Santa can bring you.
So start working out now,
and give yourself the best present ever!

Focusing the Eyes in the Martial Arts

Newsletter 841

Blinking Unnaturally in the Martial Arts

Happy Thanksgiving!
I give thanks that I am able
to do Martial Arts.

Click here to go to: MonkeyBoxingNow.com!

I just had a rather interesting conversation.
It took place in the comments section
of the blog site,
alcase.wordpress.com

I don’t usually talk in comments,
I much prefer email,
but this fellow wrote in on an article
that mentioned blinking.
In the article I had described natural methods of blinking,
which is to cleanse the eye,
the body takes care of it,
you don’t do much.
And then there was unnatural blinking,
which is when you blink as part of a flinch,
or the product of some distraction.

This fellow had a really tough time with this concept.
I guess he blinks a lot,
and he suddenly realized all his blinking was unnatural,
but what the heck can he do about it?

He got frustrated,
irritated,
and kept demanding straight answers.

So I gave him the answers,
but he just had more and more tough times.
He wasn’t,
you see,
a martial artist.

No wonder he was having a tough time!
He didn’t have any discipline!
He had no reality,
no way of understanding from experience,
and he was stuck,
blinking and blinking,
and chewing on himself for blinking unnaturally.
And,
of course,
he reached the stage
where he told me I was basically wrong.
No such thing as unnatural blinking.

After the communication ran its course,
I decided I should tell you guys.
Maybe there’s a couple of unnatural blinkers
that I can mess with.
Yes?

So here’s the straight goods.

Blinking is to cleanse the eye.
It moistens it,
washes debris,
and is something the body does naturally.
You don’t have to worry about it,
think about it,
or anything.

Unnatural blinking is not to cleanse the eyes,
but is a reaction to a distraction.
Somebody punches at your face,
you blink.
Heck,
you might flinch and duck.
Instead of cooly and calmly handling the punch.

As you do martial arts
you learn to handle the distraction of the punch,
of the fellow jumping out and screaming boo,
of the mugger who suddenly threatens you.

You don’t blink,
at least not unnaturally,
but rather open your eyes and watch,
assessing the potential impact of the situation.
You don’t turn away,
you become more aware,
and this is what the martial arts does.
It makes you more aware.

All that time staring at an opponent,
waiting for him to make a wrong move,
to blink,
to do something that indicates…
that he has gone unconscious.

Unconscious.
When somebody blinks they are stopping looking out,
and, no matter how momentarily,
looking inwards.

Not facing the situation,
but turning inward,
away,
and therefore unconscious, to a degree,
and potentially running.

Here is the key:
If you are watching, aware,
FOCUSING YOUR ATTENTION OUTWARD,
you will end up blinking naturally.
Hard to fool somebody who is aware like this.

If you blink,
then you are
FOCUSING YOUR ATTENTION INWARD,
and this results in things like unnatural blinks,
or flinches or and so on.

If you are a hunter
you want to watch your prey,
never a blink,
or he gets away.
And if you are not a hunter,
then you are hunted.

That is all there is to it,
are you looking outward?
Watching the world for potential distractions?
Undoing them as they come close to you?
Or are you distracted,
looking inward,
away from the threat,
as if that could make it disappear.

Now,
maybe you understand why this fellow
was having such a rough time.
He was face to face with his unconsciousness,
and had no discipline
to help him handle it.
You,
on the other hand,
should be able to handle it.
You stand in freestyle,
locked gaze,
waiting for the flinch,
the blink,
the momentary unfocusing of the eyes
to indicate that your prey has stopped looking outward,
and is no longer capable of seeing you incoming,
and no way of handling you.

The discipline of the martial arts.
Yes.
A way to be a hunter in a universe.
A way to be more aware.
A way to be in charge,
when everybody else is distracted,
running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Want a great art to help you focus?
Try Blinding Steel.
It is the weapons portion of Monkey Boxing.
There is lots of motion,
and you have to stay focused
to handle the swing of the weapon.
It will really help you stop blinking unnaturally,
and remain focused and aware
in a universe that is so full of mindless distractions.

Indian Silence, Zen and Tai Chi Chuan

Newsletter 834 ~ Subscribe now!

Were the Indians Masters of Their Own Brand of Zen?
part two

What a GREAT day!
Of course,
if you don’t work out,
you probably don’t really know what I mean.
Grin.

This is the second of a five parts series.
Subscribe to this newsletter to get all five parts.

Last newsletter I made the point
that the American Indian
was probably the finest warrior in the world.
To back this up,
simply consider their attitude towards that great zen concept…
silence.

In zen you create a silence so absolute
that your spirit can manifest,
that the truth of you becomes apparent.

Indians had this zen attitude towards silence.

The mere fact of walking,
as described in the first part of this series,
can be used to create silence.
But that is only the first stage.
Perhaps some of you remember an old adage
that only fools whistle?
A bit harsh,
a happy person should whistle,
but when you are hunting game,
or sneaking up to a battle,
you can’t whistle.

Instead,
you have to master the sounds of nature,
the tweet of a bird,
the call of a wolf,
the actual sound of shifting sand,
or wind in the rushes.

To master such sounds requires an appreciation of silence itself.

Consider this bit of zen:
it is not the sound you must hear,
but the silence.

Or,
as I am fond of telling students,
a candle in a coal mine
is brighter than the sun at noon.

Consider this when you are doing Tai Chi,
and don’t make a sound.

Consider this in Aikido,
and don’t let your circles make a sound.

Consider this in Karate,
or Tai Chi,
or other arts,
and quell the sound of your motion,
of your technique,
it is not just wasted energy,
but it distracts the mind
from the silence necessary
to manifest the spirit.

Here’s a link to Tai Chi,
which is a great art for pursuing silence.

The Actual Logic Behind the Martial Arts

Newsletter 830

Martial Arts More than a Gimmick

martial arts system

A complete Martial Arts System! ~ Click on the cover!

Happy Heat Wave!
Happy Work out!
The only way to beat the heat
is to work out,
get so hot
that reality is cool.
It’s true.

I remember when scientists
tested Koichi Tohei
and he sped up and slowed down his heart.
Just sat there and thought about it,
and the scientist couldn’t believe their instruments.

So why not convince yourself it’s cool?

Let’s talk about matrixing.

I often say I invented matrixing,
but the truth is
I stumbled across it.
Another way of saying it is
I made so many mistakes,
there was nothing left
but the right way.
True.

Initially,
I used a truth table
out of Boolean algebra.
Lot of fun.
Lot of work.
Made everything fit.
Analyzed motion
until there was logic.

But you won’t see all the hoops I jumped through
when you order a course.
The martial arts are separated in specific geometries.
So you just order a course,
and the data is perfectly laid out,
and you go through a few arts,
and you have it.
All the geometries.

I have provided a few records of what I did.
One record,
for instance,
is
‘Matrixing: The Master Text.’

http://monstermartialarts.com/martial-arts/2f-matrixing-the-master-text/

This shows a few of the matrixes I drew,
and you can see the exact progression of steps I took.

Still,
if you want the absolutely nut
that grew the mighty oak,
you have to read Neutronics.
Philosophy, you see.

And here is where it really all came from.

One day I was sitting in my back yard,
tapping a piece of rebar on the cement,
Ting, ting, ting.
And,
suddenly…
TONG
it was like a giant gong went off.
I could see all reality.
I understood reality,
and a simple phrase jumped into my head.

‘For something to be true,
the opposite must also be true.’

That was it.
From that simple realization
and verbalization,
I grew neutronics,
which manifested in Matrixing.
But you would have to read
some books on Neutronics
to understand that process.

Okay.
the reason I tell you all this
is that there’s a lot of newbies to the newsletter.
And I know I’ve sort of said it in a quick nutshell,
but they need to understand
that there is more to this stuff than a gimmick.

When somebody says,
‘Oh,
that Al Case,
he’s a quack…’

Ask if they’ve read the testimonials at
MonsterMartialArts.com

When somebody says it’s a trick,
‘you can’t learn the martial arts that fast,’
Ask if they’ve ever seen me take a guy to black belt.
I do it in three months,
and the thing was recorded on
The Three Month Black Belt Course

http://monstermartialarts.com/martial-arts/black-belt-course/

And so on.
Really,
only believe your own eyes and ears.
Make your own decision.
If a guy says I am junk,
and he has never done my courses,
you better think about whether you should listen to him.

I’ve got 50 years experience,
I’ve written dozens of books
and produced many video courses.

All the proof is here.
You just have to want the truth.

It’s Quick and Easy…if you are willing to learn.

Okey dokey,
enough for you newbies.
Hope I’ve enlightened,
and not frightened.

I’m going to write about
MONKEYLAND!
in the next newsletter or two.
That’s a whole mother trip.

You guys and gals…

have a great work out!

The Best Three Martial Arts Forms

Newsletter 827

Which Three Martial Arts Forms Should You Study?

Again, thanks to all
who have purchased the
Tiger and Butterfly Martial Arts System.
It’s available on Amazon.

martial arts system

A complete Martial Arts System! ~ Click on the cover!

Now,
got an interesting email.
The question was,
If I could only study three forms,
which three forms would you recommend?

Quite interesting.
I mean,
I’m always telling everybody
study as much as you can,
there’s no end to knowledge,
learn as many arts as you can.

BUT…
if you could only study three forms…?

I recommended
Sanchin,
Seisan,
Sanseirui.

Those are out of the Pan Gai Noon course.

http://monstermartialarts.com/martial-arts/evolution-of-a-martial-art/

Why would I recommend those?
Because those three forms
focus on grounding,
and dedicated hand motion.
All three forms teach one how to move in any direction,
and yet keep your ground,
and use that ground in your hand techniques.
There is a tremendous swirl of energy
up the body in those three forms.
And,
the energy is easily manifest in the hands,
and the hands,
almost perfectly fit the ‘slap-grab’ concepts
which are outlined in Binary Matrixing.

This is not to say the forms of classical Karate aren’t good,
they are,
but they are ten,
and the request was for three.

And,
this doesn’t mean Shaolin isn’t good,
but Shaolin spreads out over a number of concepts.

And,
why not Matrixing?
There are three forms in Matrixing?
Because the purpose of matrixing
is to put logic in the martial arts.
What good is all that knowledge
if you can’t apply it to a variety of martial arts,
to more than three forms?

So I was sort of caught,
hoist with my own petard,
I believe it is called.
I wanted to say matrixing more than anything,
but if you only had three forms,
then those are the three.
They give more internal energy,
contain more face to face,
hand to hand combat.

And,
I can’t resist,
I would recommend the iron horse
(kima shodan/tekki 1)
as a fourth form.
Just because it causes
oodles and oodles of pure energy.

Anyway,
that all said,
the reason the question was so good,
so appropriate,
was because when I write a book
I always think it is the best.
You have to, or why write?
So I think a book is the best,
but it may or may not be,
I have to wait to see what people say.

And the idea that one could study only three forms,
aligned with my purpose
in the Tiger/Butterfly book.
My purpose,
as always,
is to put together
a better martial arts system.
Each time I sit down to write,
I am thinking,
how can I make this better,
how can I formulate what I’ve done,
into better and better art.

How can I give people the purest information
to cause them the quickest progress,
and the most profound experience
in the martial arts.

So if the question had been,
what seven forms,
then I would have rejoiced mightily.

But…
three forms.
Zowie.
What a question.
You guys feel free to consider your choices.

Tiger and Butterfly Martial Arts Book

The new Martial Arts book is called
‘Tiger and Butterfly,’
and it’s pretty darned good.

If you look at the title,
and you have done any matrixing,
then you can see that I have used
portions of the Matrix Karate course,
and portions of the Shaolin Butterfly.

This was interesting,
because I didn’t want to fall into the trap
of having systems disagree.
I wanted the concepts to build on each other,
not work against each other.

In a way,
there is a certain similarity
between Tiger and Butterfly
and the MCMAP books I wrote.

The similarity is in the arrangement of material.
This had to be,
because when you make a system,
certain things have to be done,
certain rules have to be followed,
certain principles have to be included,
and all the way up the belt levels.

One of the reasons I wrote this book
is because I visited a few schools,
and I saw how the modern schools
have let forms and techniques fall by the way.
They work on freestyle,
on fighting.
The students get better,
but they can’t do certain things.
For instance,
they don’t understand how to take a punch.
And,
they have limited knowledge
concerning what happens
when you complete the circle (cycle) of a technique.

The system has eight belts,
white
yellow
orange
purple
blue
green
brown
black

There are no degrees.
Each belt is designed to be done
in about three months.
Brown belt might take longer,
but the material on the brown level
is pretty advanced.

When done,
the student will have those liquid kicks,
those floating kicks that look so light,
but knock down a elephant.
They should be able to take any kind of a punch.
They will be able to freestyle with authority,
and make a grab art out of any technique.
They will have knowledge.
Real knowledge.
Not just the fast reflexes of freestyle,
but a complete body knowledge,
how the body is constructed,
how to tweak it for more energy,
how to construct it for total effectiveness.

I want you to think about something.
When you study matrixing,
there are several courses,
and I recommend that you do them all,
that you get the complete picture,
from striking to locking
to guiding to manipulating
to predicting to taking down…
and more.

But,
I can’t reach everybody,
and some people don’t understand
just how big the martial arts are,
and that you have to understand them as a science.
They are locked in ‘hit and punch,’
‘ground and pound,’
and don’t see or understand the bigger picture.

This book is for those people.
Hopefully it will get them excited for the big picture.
But even if it doesn’t,
it will afford a massive education,
and do a lot towards bringing these people
who are studying arts that have degraded over time
into the real art.
They will appreciate it as science.

And,
even if they don’t,
if they do the book,
not just read it and say…
‘oh, I knew that,’
or…
‘we have that in our system,’
but actually do the book,
all the drills and techniques,
all the forms and fighting drills,
then they will be doing the true art.
Whether they were stupid and didn’t even understand
what I am talking about,
if they do the drills and exercises,
they will end up doing the true art.

For instance,
at a certain point,
a certain belt,
I teach a type of kick.
It’s a floating kick,
then you turn the hips over and slam the energy
down into the ground
as you strike.
The point is…
you can’t do that kick
unless you use the tan tien
in a certain way.
You simply can’t.
So they will practice it,
get it,
and stumble over the concept,
whether they understand what is happening or not,
and they will end up with classical power
in a certain mode.
And the whole system is constructed
so that one mode leads to the next.

Okay,
spoken enough.
Simply go to Amazon and enter

or

or something like that,
and watch it pop up.

Remember
it is unique,
matrixing brought one more step forward,
and it is REALLY potent!
It is a COMPLETE martial arts system.

The Greatest Strategy in the Martial Arts

Newsletter 821 ~ sign up now!

What’s with All the Bowing Stuff in the Martial Arts?

“Politeness is the greatest strategy.”
Al Case

The most polite man i have ever met
was my instructor in the Kang Duk Won.
He was also the best martial artist I ever saw,
which leads to an interesting possibility:

Politeness goes hand in hand with competence.

Think about it,
if you are polite,
honestly polite,
then you won’t be scared,
you won’t have hidden demons driving you,
the martial arts will have expunged you of all that.
You will be honestly competent.

So practice politeness
as well as seek competence.

Now,
with that in mind,
what is the purpose of bowing in the martial arts?
Aside from my little diatribe on politeness,
why should people keep bowing and bowing all the time?

On one level,
it is a sign of respect.
I respect the work you’ve done,
the level you’ve reached.
And under that is the implied question:
will you teach me.
And the teacher bows to show respect
to those who have come seeking his instruction.

On another level,
it is merely saying hi.
hi to everybody in the school.
Hi to everybody who contributed to the school,
even if they are passed on,
a simple greeting to your friends.

With those two viewpoints in mind,
here are the times you would bow.

Bow when entering the school.
Bow to senior classmates.
Bow to junior classmates.
Bow when stepping onto the mat.
Bow to the instructor,
especially when asking a question.
Bow after receiving instruction.
Bow at the beginning of class.
Bow at the end of class.
Bow before you engage in any drill,
be it sparring, form, etc.
Immediately disengage and bow
if an injury has occurred
as a result of something you’ve done.

AND,
bow to a classmate outside of school,
or,
if not considered appropriate,
give him/her some sign of greeting.

AND,
whenever entering another school,
always bow,
show that you have studied the martial arts,
and that you are aware of martial etiquette.

Sounds like a lot of bowing,
yes?
Well, it is,
but let me offer an insight.
I can’t imagine not bowing,
I strive to bow the most,
to set the best example of being polite.
I am constantly running into students
who are surprised when I bow to them.
But,
it encourages them to bow.
And,
it makes you feel good.

Imagine walking into a school gymnasium,
or an auditorium,
with 500 people present.
Imagine yelling out…
HI EVERYBODY!
And having them all yell to you…
HI, AL!

After near 50 years in the arts,
that’s what it feels like to me
when I bow.

And I like to think
that maybe I’m as competent as I am polite.
One can hope.

Here’s a link to the martial arts
I have been studying for near 50 years.
Take a look,
and see if I’ve made any inroads,
if the changes i have made from the classical
have value.

True Martial Arts Training Methods

Newsletter 816

Relaxing is the only way to find the True Martial Arts

I remember reading of Koichi Tohei,
many years ago,
and some scientists asked if they could test his ki.
Like, on machines.

Now this isn’t a smart idea.
Ki is an energy motivated by thought,
sometimes the energy can be registered,
but the thought never can,
so science often proves there is no such thing as ki.
Can’t be measured…doesn’t exist.
Which is the same reasoning
that kept the world flat for so many centuries.
They just don’t what to measure,
and there isn’t a machine in existence
that can measure thought.

That said,
the test went round and round,
they couldn’t explain what Koichi was doing,
and they couldn’t figure out the readings they were getting,
and he,
probably with a diabolical sense of humor,
told them he could slow his heart down.

They said nonsense,
a human being couldn’t control the nervous system in that way.
So he did it.
He dropped it some 30 beats,
then sped it up again,
then slowed it down.
And the scientists were really confused.

So let’s talk about what you are supposed to do
with your mind in the martial arts.

First,
forget it.
It’s just a bunch of memories.
Get rid of the past,
at least ignore it,
and you are more in the present,
and then you can better control your body.
Logical, right?
But too simple.
People have a hard time buying into this simplicity.

So,
in Karate,
we trained so that the mind
didn’t become excited,
and so that we kept looking,
and ignored emotion.
Ignored the emotion of fighting.
Didn’t feel the anxiety,
or panic,
or sudden beating of the heart
as the world devolved to chaos.

Note that I am moving at the same time.

When somebody throws a punch at me
I actually slow down.
My mind looks right past any memories,
and I focus on the moment.
I stop reacting,
even to my own training,
and start moving with the person.
In real time.

Now,
there are MANY examples of this in the world.
The baseball player,
for instance,
the guy way out in the field,
takes off…AT THE CRACK OF THE BAT!
Not before it,
not after it,
but at the same time.
AND,
he moves intuitively to where the ball is going.
He attempts to ‘meet’ the ball,
at some specified time and place.

But how did he know where the ball was going…
at THE CRACK OF THE BAT!

There are other examples,
but this is my favorite,
probably because everybody knows what I am talking about.
Especially if they have played baseball.

If you have ever had a sixth sense,
known when something was going to happen before it happened,
felt somebody walk behind you (hairs on end),
that is you,
putting aside memories,
and perceiving directly.

In Karate,
it happened about the time I got to Black Belt.
When I got there I began to focus,
without excitement or distraction,
on what was happening.
And it really screwed people up,
when I displayed no reaction time.

Reaction comes from ‘react’
which means you are so immersed in memories (or training)
that you can’t perceive directly.

Signals have to travel through the body to create motion,
instead of you,
apart from your body,
just creating motion.

Okay,
I’ve talked long enough,
probably left as much confusion as enlightenment.
But here’s the trick…
You have to train with people
in a system which understands this.
In which the techniques support this,
the forms are aligned and orderly.
The freestyle is not a fight,
but a procedure of learning how to look.
Not getting excited,
not getting distracted by emotions,
but calming yourself
so that you don’t get excited.

I’ve done the best I could
to give you a good system.
In fact…systemS.

Here are the systems…
http://monstermartialarts.com/courses/

But you have to work,
and work hard.
You have to get the idea that I’m talking about in your mind.
You have to force yourself to calm,
to put aside excitement,
and become cool and machinelike in your actions.

Good luck with this,
in spite of all the simplicity of my systems,
it is still hard.

It’s hard to restrain emotion,
put aside memories,
memories that you sometimes don’t even recognize as existing,
and function on a high level.

But it is possible.
Good work out to you.
