The Rundown on the Rhonda Defeat!

Happy Thanksgiving!
I give thanks for many things,
I give thanks for working out,
and what working out does for me.

Who would have thought,
in these robotic,
wartorn,
poverty stricken times,
there would be such a unique and fun way
to find personal responsibility
and martial excellence?

Before we talk martial arts,
I want to share a thought.
I was sitting somewhere,
working on my laptop,
and I had this thought.
So I emailed it to myself,
and it’s been sitting there,
and thanksgiving is a good time to share it. Here we go:

Your duty is to observe the universe, to listen to both sides, to never take a stand against one side or the other, until the truth pops out. The truth is not a viewpoint or opinion, it is merely what is.

Now,
let’s talk martial arts.

It was a shock when Rhonda got knocked out.
And I don’t understand why it was a shock,
because it was inevitable.
It was inevitable as soon as Joe Rogan claimed that
Rhonda wasn’t once in a lifetime,
she was once in history.
It seems that we finally got the ultimate ‘adjective.’
Not star,
not superstar,
not once in a lifetime,
but once…ever.

As soon as I heard that I knew Rhonda was going to lose.
I just knew.

Part of it is that when you listen to fighters
and they describe what they are going to do to their opponent,
they are living in a fantasy.

‘I’m going to do this.’
‘My striking is superior and he can’t match my grappling.’
‘I’m going to pound his face into the floor.’
I know,
when I hear this sort of thing,
that the fighter is in his own mind,
trying to psyche himself up,
but it is a lost cause.

There is just a hollow feeling,
a ‘spirit-less’ feeling,
to such words said before a fight.

The winner,
on the other hand,
doesn’t boast about what he is going to do.
He is serious.
He has no fantasy distracting him.

Here’s the weird thing:
Rhonda didn’t say such a thing,
it was Joe Rogan.
But it was so unique,
and everybody was so pro-Rhonda,
I just knew she about to fall.

Now,
here’s the thing:
when people think they are the best,
there is no place to go but down.
When they are serious,
and look at each fight as a challenge,
a mountain to climb,
there is no where to go but up.

Rogan,
with his statement,
left Rhonda no where to go but down.

I don’t say Rogan made her lose,
there was just a predict in his words.
There was a summation
of the position that the world put Rhonda in.

Tell the truth,
she is probably going to be more alive,
more determined now,
than she was before.
Now she can climb again.
Now she can go up.

Now,
the fight itself.

Rhonda tried to box a better boxer.
Holly is a champion boxer,
Rhonda apparently had a fantasy of trying to outbox a boxer,
so she didn’t go to the ground.

I think everybody agrees,
Rhonda would beat Holly on the ground.

What a miscalculation on Rhonda’s part.

And,
what will she do next time?
Will she work on her boxing game?
Of course.
But the heart of her strategy
should be her ground game.
How to avoid Holly’s fist
get under it,
and take that girl down.

Truth,
I watched Rhonda simply run into Holly’s fat fist time after time,
and I cringed with each impact.

Man,
Rhonda can take it.
But it was not smart.
It would have been a lot smarter to assess the distances involved,
and respect Holly as a champ in her own right.

Here’s the truth:
we all strive to be the best we can be.
To strive to beat somebody else,
however,
is only a partial proof,
for it comes at the cost of another human being.
The true art is being the best you can be
without beating somebody else.

Weird,
eh?

That said,
I watch the fights,
I learn from them,
and I appreciate them.
With all my talk,
one has to appreciate the measuring stick.

A New Master Instructor!

I’ve recently completed my study of the Master Instructor Course and would like to share with you some of the wins I got and also what I’ve learned and gotten from the course…
…while training at a local gym lately I had opportunity to get a practical example of and put to use  one of the Three Rules and the Greatest Strategy from your Master instructor Course
I was practicing my Karate Kata and also Training in some techniques of striking on the heavy bag keeping myself to myself, in walks a pumped up MMA stylist. I can feel his eyes burning into the back of my head, but I chose to pay him no attention until he eventually asks “What is it you do?” meaning what style do I practice. To which I reply Karate he goes on to tell me how Karate is a useless martial art and how much better MMA is and how much tougher MMA fighters are compared to traditional martial arts practitioners.
I could sense he was just looking for an argument, or maybe even a contest of martial skill, as he was rather aggressive and pumped up in tone and attitude. So I decided to put the Greatest Strategy to work.
I began to talk to the guy in a relaxed and calm soothing tone of voice and began to talk to him about martial arts in general and how I like to train mainly as a hobby and for enjoyment and also that it keeps me reasonably fit and healthy and that in no way could I do what he does in the cage that he must be very brave and tough, and that I admire him for his devotion to his art. As we began to talk I noticed how his demeanor changed from confrontational to now a more relaxed open friendly talkative one I could see that he no longer saw me as any threat to his ego or toughness, and that he could see I’m a really calm peaceful friendly kinda guy with no ego. We began to talk about the fact he had trained in Karate when younger and other things, and we parted as friends.
Later on in the day I was going thru the Master Instructor Course when I came across the The Three Rules and The Greatest Strategy and it Hit Me that was what I had learned today by being egoless and calm and relaxed and being of a friendly manner I had avoided a confrontational argument or any kind of macho showdown or contest of ability and instead made a friend that day and that to me was a Win 🙂
I’ve learned so much from this course and know it will be a part of my own study and practice and teaching of the martial arts for many years to come, again AL I give you a big thank you for such great instruction all your books courses etc have helped me in being the best I can be thank you.

There was more to his win,
but I really wanted to emphasize what he had done.
He used the greatest strategy and
defused a potential fight,
and made a potential friend.

All by not responding the fear
that was in some other fellow.

That’s right,
FEAR!

The reason people pick fights is because they are scared.
But here’s the trick,
if you’re not scared back,
which is to say,
if you don’t respond to their fear,
and their aggression,
and their attempt to fight,
everything fritters out
and communication can take place.

Now,
instead of Danny or the other fellow
going home with bruises and breaks,
they have a chance to work out together,
to sample each others martial arts.

How the heck do you think I learned so many arts?
Not by going and paying monthlies for years,
but by meeting people,
by sharing freely what I knew,
and picking up whatever they offered me.

That is the secret,
and super kudos to Danny.

may your fists always be gentle.

Now,
before I close,
I want to say one thing.

The only thing you have of value
in this whole entire world
is…

INTEGRITY

Integrity means being honest,
having good principles.

But it means more.

When you practice CBM
(Coordinated Body Motion),
you make your body into an integral unit.
The more whole and unified you become,
the more awareness there is,
the more energy there is,
the more spirituality you exude.

I suggest you get a good dictionary,
look up integrity,
find out where it came from,
and figure out how
it can become the cornerstone of your martial arts.

How you can hold to your principles,
but never compromise.
How you can exchange and trade,
and never shred your integrity.

And,
of course,
learning the Master Instructor Course,
(and other matrixing courses)
will teach you
how to unify your body
in a mechanical and energetical sense.
It (they) will make you whole.

Release of New Martial Arts Book on Matrixing!

Release of New Martial Arts Book

Happy Halloween!
And happy work out to you!

Okay dokay!
The new book on the martial arts is done,
should be on amazon.
It is called
‘How to Matrix The Martial Arts…
and the universe and life and everything.’

The first section deals with the theory of matrixing.

The second section shows the actual mathematics
(geometries) used in matrixing.

The third section deals with the structure of the body and energy.

The fourth section gives the exact methods I used
when I matrixed the various arts.

The fifth section has to do with the effects of Matrixing,
how it slops over into real life and changes everything.

The sixth section has to do with how matrixing brings about neutronics.

The seventh section is ‘Beyond Hands,’
in which is the overview and arrangement
of the entire martial arts.

The reason I wrote this book is because I wanted
an overview of the entire matrixing process.
I want people to be able to understand,
in a thumbnail sketch,
what all the courses are structured around.
I want people to understand the overall scheme,
and be able to put all the courses and books together,
to make sense out of the whole thing.

Now,
if you have been a long time matrixer,
then you may have seen some of this material in various form.
Hopefully the arrangement I present here,
will enhance your understanding,
and give you a leg up.

Also,
and this may be a bit arrogant of me,
I wanted to write an answer to
The Book of Five Rings
by Miamoto Musashi.
That is what the first six sections of the book are about.
The seventh section of the book,
Beyond Hands,
is an answer to The Tao,
by Lao Tze.

So that is what the book is.

you may have to google the thing,
or search for it on Amazon,
but it should be released by now.

Fascinating book on how to align keno and make it more powerful.

Thank you for sending me the Master Instructor course so promptly. Below I touch upon some of the things I’ve learned from it, and other observations…

I joined a school of Wing Chun about six months ago, and dropped out two months ago. The reason for this was that the three forms were just rushed through at break-neck speed at the start of each class, and we were expected to learn them with a single glance. It was a definite case of ‘monkey see monkey do,’ but with one of the monkeys being on amphetamines. Thank God that wasn’t the first style I had ever done or I would have walked away from the Martial Arts in disgust, but fortunately I already had good chunks of Karate, various interpretations of Tae Kwon Do, Krav Maga and even Capoeira under my belt, as well as being a TKD instructor myself.

I understand the importance of teaching in small increments that build on one another. I have been doing this since I began teaching in 1987.

I am lucky to have many ‘ideal students’. The main reason I did this course was so that I don’t let them down. And I believe I have learned much from you in this respect.

Each time I show a sequence, I always follow it with an application. In some of the later Hyung, the movements are slightly stylized, so I teach the “Art” and then the real world tweaking that makes it workable.

After teaching students a new move I already usually ask them if they can think of an application. I myself have actually learned from students in doing so.

Due to current class numbers and the range of grades I often leave students to work on small snippets of techniques alone or paired up for a while. It’s more of a logistical necessity than strategy though, but I have taken what you have written about letting students work alone on board.

The four principles are already adhered to in our style of TKD (Australian Freestyle Tae Kwon Do Academy – ‘AFTA’) but currently in a haphazard manner and are rarely, and differently,  named. The same can be said of The Four Powers. They are treated as things students are meant to intuitively learn through practice and experience. This is another thing I will be focusing on more in future as you lay it out in a very logical manner, and I don’t want to keep my students in the dark.

Thank you for your words on introducing Freestyle sparring. This is something else I have now taken on board.

I was dumbfounded at your explanation of the ‘perfect strike’. The few times I have pulled this off, I too felt no impact, and have actually puzzled over why my opponents were lying on the ground. I thought I was unusual in that sense and couldn’t explain it.

Thank you for the elucidation of the principles of physics in relation to the Martial Arts. It is something I have never come across before, but makes a lot of sense. Much food for thought and reflection (and experimentation). The DVDs really drove it home as well.

Look,
the course is easy,
it is filled with things you have not come across,
or,
if you have,
the principles are firmed up and stated correctly,
and ready for you to actually use.

Not a bit of wisdom,
like a line from the Tao,
obscure but…how do you use it?

Rather,
a solid piece of data
related to the real world,
backed by physics,
so you can use and understand
and actually teach!

I tell you,
without the data on this course,
a person is not really a teacher,
he is a money see monkey do-er.

And the real point here is as Jamie says…

I don’t want to keep my students in the dark.

Isn’t that really the point of it all?
Do you want to just monkey seeing and monkey doing?
OR do you want to teach,
to pass on the real martial arts
and really help your students,
and improve the world?

Did you know that in Foxboro, MA
no martial artist can practice if his shoes are untied.
Got to be true, eh?
I sort of remember that Karate guys work out in bare feet,
but,
maybe they mean all the other martial arts guys/

And,
in Sutherland, Iowa
it is strictly forbidden
to kick the hat off somebody’s head
using martial arts.
I guess if you can kick a hat off
and you don’t know martial arts,
it’s okay.
I mean,
I don’t know for sure,
some of these furshlugginer martial arts laws
are tuff to figger out!

And,
in Casper, Wyoming,
martial arts experts may not wear goatees,
they are illegal
unless one has the appropriate and special permit.
Now that is experts,
which would be black belts,
so i suppose one could have a goatee
until they reached black belt,
then they would have to shave that sucker off.

Now,
to be honest,
I am a wee bit unsure of the veracity of these legislations.
Although,
again to be honest,
anything is possible in Obama’s America.

That said,
I will assume that these laws are true,
until somebody from
Foboro, Sutherland, or Casper,
writes to me and tells me otherwise.
And,
it gos without saying,
I will be extra careful if I am ever caught in those towns.
If I am not caught,
I probably won’t be careful.
You know how that is.

So,
I have a special release coming.
It’s actually going to be a re-release,
but,
it is the introduction to that release
that is going to be the most interesting.
Here is the title of the book
that is being prepared

I’m going to enlighten people,

When you think about it,

People go to school,
they learn things,
and most of what they learn is bushwah.
Lies.
So,
here comes the truth,
and we’ll see what happens.

All these people who have been saying no,

But you,

The Truth About Classical Karate Kicks

What Do You Do if Somebody Grabs Your Kick!

I received a great email,
the question it asked was about kicks.
What do you do when somebody grabs your leg?

Now this is sort of funny,
because kicks,
and kicking exercises
have degraded so much,
this is a valid question.
It didn’t used to be valid.
I’ll be speaking specifically of the side thrust kick here.

back in 1967,
we would just twist the hips and pull the kick back.
It required a certain flexibility of leg,
but it was easy.
You got used to pulling with the hips,
and we didn’t know we were training
with a sort of ‘whole body’ technique,
or what I call CBM,
Coordinated Body Motion,
using the whole body as one unit.

And,
another technique we practiced
was to do a shoulder roll away,
because the catcher couldn’t
hang on to the whole body weight.

Now Kenpo is a good art,
lots of fun,
but there are some problems with it.
In combining several types of arts,
they mixed concepts,
so consider how we used to handle a caught leg
a caught side thrust kick,
in the Kang Duk Won.

Near every class
for over three years,
we did something called plant and push.
We did it with a front heel thrust,
and with a side thrust kick.
With plant and push
you and your partner start in the horse stance.
You shuffle forward,
‘popping’ really,
exploding from the tan tien.
Both feet start motion at the same time,
the front leg plants on the partner’s waist,
and the back foot replaces the front foot,
they both land at the same time.
Doing it this way causes the tan tien to explode,
to ‘pop’ with energy.

Now,
you aren’t kicking,
you are placing your foot,
and then you push.
You only push a couple of inches,
but that is the exact area
of muscle and energy needed
to develop the power in a kick.
You push the person’s whole body,
and he gives way,
just enough
so you have to use your power.

Now,
after three or four years of doing this exercise,
an interesting thing happened.
We could kick,
and if somebody grabbed the thrust kick,
we would hop slightly,
jamming weight down the support leg,
and extending the caught leg,
and we could plant and push the fellow away.
Could do a lot of damage,
really.

This is a true ‘chi power’ kick,
a complete CBM training method.
We stomp to create more energy and thrust the hips,
the reverse of kenpo,
but the same whole body principle.

The thing is that this exercise
is the type that many people look down on,
because they think it can’t be used,
and they don’t realize
how much power accumulates,
and how the person changes over time.
People simply don’t practice this exercise,
and,
to tell the truth,
I never saw it outside of our school.

When they kick today,
they use the kicks from Muy Thai,
and they slop through,
no focus.
They use the legs for bashers,
and they don’t develop pin point accuracy.

We would practice our kicks religiously,
hundreds and hundreds and hundreds
of kicks per kick per side.
We got to the point where we used the ball of the foot
like a balpeen hammer,
right in the center of the chest.
Knocked the F out of anybody,
and we were so fast that people couldn’t catch our kicks.
When I got my black belt
I could kick ANYBODY that was a lower belt.
No problem.
But I couldn’t kick other black belts,
and that was where we would get into catching kicks,
and the worth of the plant and push exercise.

BUT,
you have to do it for years.
You can’t be one of these guys
that thinks hitting the bag can be done
with any part of the foot,
and slop doesn’t matter
as long as you kick hard.

You have to focus,
use awareness,
use the ball of the foot,
snap the leg back,
no pause in the cocking position
(when the leg is next to the hip)
sink the weight at impact,
use the whole body
so that the body is like whip.
Takes a lot of work.
But that is the value of the true art.

The world,
unfortunately,
wants the glitter and bauble
the bruises and blood
of the octagon.
They want image,
not art.
But that’s okay.
Everybody has their choices.

Anyway,
hope this helps.

Welcome back.
How’d you do?
On the first quiz I got 44%
On the second I got 36%
So average of 40% capable of killing people.
Hmmm.
I guess that doesn’t make me too balanced.
But that’s okay.
As long as I take my meds and…
just joking.
I don’t like pills.
At all.

Anyway,
I found the quizzes interesting.
I study the martial arts,
it’s all about killing.
I had to think long and hard
about some of the questions,
after all,
if I’m practicing a technique where I rip somebody’s head off…
isn’t that thinking about murder?
Hmmm.

Which brings us to an interesting point.
the martial arts are,
by and large,
a fantasy.
Of all the people I know who know martial arts,
probably one in a hundred ever got in a fight.
They all got calmer, smarter,
were in better shape,
were nicer people.

And,
I haven’t been in a fight since high school.
that’s a long time.

So we come to the crux of it all.

It’s not wrong to be capable,
I would count that as a gained ability.
That’s why you are studying.
But,
it’s probably wrong to act on those impulses,
and I would say that martial artists are much more capable,
but much less willing to act on impulse.
Sort of turns that bad feeling you get
from being so capable and efficient and all,
into a nice feeling.

Yeah.
You know martial arts,
and you can hurt people,
but because you understand the consequences of hurting people,
you are more careful not to.

Heck,
and you thought you’d done badly.
Silly you.

Now,
want to know the art that I do,
that would probably result
in the most damage to somebody?
That would really hurt them?
Tai Chi.

Yeah,
that slow stuff.
Loosey goosey slow as molasses.
Much deadlier than Karate.
Maybe not as deadly as Blinding Steel,
but Blinding steel uses weapons.

Anyway,
want to hear about a weird fight?
The guy who got me into the Kang Duk Won,
his brother was a Hell’s Angel
who also studied Karate at the Kang Duk Won.
Don’t be so surprised,
there were a lot of bikers there.

So this brother,
T I’ll call him,
got in an argument with the head of the school,
Bob Babich.
One of T’s favorite weapons
was a primary chain off a motorcycle.
I don’t know what kind of motorcycle,
but T could wrap it around his waist
and pull it out in a fight.
He could swing it and it would wrap around,
or he could turn it 90 degrees,
and it was like an iron bar.

So T told Bob he couldn’t beat a guy
armed with a primary chain.
Bob said he could.
T said he couldn’t.
Bob told him to try it.
T pulled out the chain,
flicked it through the air.
Bob stepped back and let it pass,
and it cut him above the eye,
a thin, little slit that hardly bled.

The funny thing here
is that T was a killer.

the dollar to go bad,
the Chinese to buy McDonalds…
it can end tomorrow with a mugging,
a fender bender that escalates,
a cop on the wrong side of bed.

And that’s when that fifteen years of training
turns into 10 seconds of survival.

Now,
most of the guys reading this,
they are active in the martial arts,
but there are a few who aren’t…
and who should be.

You make sure your car is running smooth,
the engine isn’t pinging,
the tires aren’t bald,
because those things can interrupt your life.
Well,
martial arts training can save your life.

And even if you don’t use them,
you will use the health benefits,
the calm of mind benefits,
you will live longer,
just like Mom.

The one thing that gets me concerning the Martial Arts, and it shouldn’t, but it does, are ads like the one right below.

I Couldn’t Believe I Froze Up … What’s Really Ridiculous Is That I’ve Been Trained In 13 Martial Arts Since I Was Only Four Years Old, So I, Of All People Should Have Been Able To Do Something, But I Couldn’t – I Didn’t Know What To Do In This Exact Situation, Even Though I Practiced Many Similar Situations. This Was A False Sense Of Security.

matrix karate black beltdynamic tension muscle building for martial artsThis ad is off the internet, it’s part of a big pitch designed to empower people with ‘invisible force fields’ that enable them to handle multiple attackers with their bare hands, to tear apart whole mobs, and without any martial arts training.

Or, as in the case above, the guy had studied lots of fighting disciplines, but they didn’t work.

Okay, so let’s look at the real facts here.

Fact Number One: I doubt if the guy studied Karate, or Kenpo, or Aikido, or even a smidgeon of Shaolin. But if he did, he better ask for his money back because…They weren’t the real thing, they weren’t real fighting disciplines.

Fact Number Two: In spite of the hype of ads like this, ads which actually degrade the real martial arts in favor of making money for some bum who studied no martial arts, or martial arts that weren’t real, there is no substitute for learning a real martial art.

A fake, comic book, internet scam martial art is a handful of tricks that look neat, but have little relation to each other.

A real self defense method is a LOT of tricks, tied together with effective theory so that everything relates, and which then can work on you to change your mindset and make you a better human being.

Consider this: a real art, like Karate or Gung Fu or Krav Maga develops intuition. It develops a sixth sense. Let me tell you this: if I was that guy I wouldn’t have awakened when the bad guys so much as stepped on my property. The hairs would have stood on my neck, I would have been wired, I would have been more alert than Defcon Five! Because THAT is what a real fighting discipline does to you. It wakes you up, it makes you intuitive, it gives you that sixth sense. 

Consider this: when you study a real discipline, like Jujitsu or Wing Chun or good, old Karate, when somebody holds a gun on you…you instantly wake up! You are more alert than you have ever been, and you can’t stop the scenarios from enfolding in your mind. I can do this, I can do that, and you sort through them and wait, because you know, when the time comes, that you won’t be thinking, you will be doing.

Concerning the above two considerations, the above two chapters, I speak from personal experience. This is not a hype, or a war story, or some whimsical comic book supposition.

So the conclusion is this: if you don’t know a real form of self defense, a classical method that’s been formed through the centuries, then you are a sitting duck. You have no discipline for emergencies, you have no plan, and you likely don’t even have the conditioning.

Yes, sometimes a form of self defense like Karate or Kung Fu might have some mistakes in it, maybe defenses against weapons that are no more, maybe a poser technique, but even these problems tend to make you think, condition your body, give you alternatives in the extreme. Everything is an education, and it really all depends on what you do with it, whether you make it real enough to save your life.

And, here is the truth: don’t bother with the hype, don’t bother with comic book ads. Only seek out real martial arts, real forms of self defense. Learn them fast, and learn more than one, because what one doesn’t teach another one will.

To do less is to stand on the street in the middle of the mob holding hundred dollar bills and scream ‘Don’t take my money!’

You’ll end up in the gutter faster than fast, and it’s your own fault for not being prepared, for not getting in shape, for not giving yourself a real Martial Arts education when you could have.

Bruce Lee is often considered, specifically as to what drove him to his martial arts theories. The main focus of the book, however, is to compare and contrast Jeet Kune Do to the more classical martial arts, specifically, the author’s art of Karate.

This is a hard core book. While it is respectful, it is obvious that the author holds Mr. Lee in high esteem, there are some very hard questions asked concerning the formation of JKD, and the real purpose of the art.

It is also an intelligent book, going into Matrixing Technology, which is the first and only science of the martial arts, and Neutronic philosophy. The author claims that because JKD is an advanced martial art only advanced methods of thought can be used to analyze it.

Which is to say that if you are Beeavis or Butthead, you may want to avoid this tome. It won’t teach you Jeet Kune Do, and it may hurt your head to actually start thinking about it.

Mr. Case has, as said, near 50 years martial arts experience. He began Kenpo Karate in 1967, quickly became an instructor, and went on to study virtually every martial art that came down the pike during the Golden Age of Martial Arts. He became a writer for the magazines in 1981, and had his own column in Inside Karate. Thus, Mr. Case doesn’t enter the picture as a newbie, but an experienced fighter and writer. His compare and contrast with JKD should provide the most enlightened student with much thought.
