Yoga Fixes Body Easily!

Yoga (The Yoga Kata)

Yoga has been around for thousands of years. Yoga asanas, or postures, were being done by people for this period of time for one simple reason: they work. The interesting thing is that they work, in spite of the fact that they are, for the most part, being done wrong.

I stumbled across this fact as a result of my studies in the martial arts. I studied martial arts for years and years, for decades, and finally realized that I was trying too hard. I was using all my muscles, all my energy, and it was a waste.

It was a waste because how tense your muscles are doesn’t have much to do with how hard you hit. What matters is how relaxed you are. For when you are relaxed you can deliver the punch more efficiently.

If you are tense you are actually working against yourself, against your own body and mind. You are locking up muscles and actually stopping the flow of energy that results in efficient motion.

The problem was that nobody understood this. Instead, karate instructors would train people and wait for them to get tired of using so much effort, would wait for them, after some years, to start relaxing when they executed the moves.

Waiting for a student to get tired is not very efficient. Especially when compared to instructing them on when and how to relax.

In Yoga people are put in postures, and they stay that way, and the instructors, often sadistic animals, chuckle as the student undergoes the effort and the strain and the pain. Heck, we’ve all heard them chuckling and expounding on how easy it is.

But they don’t tell people how to make easy. Even if they do understand, they are often so filled with their own cleverness that they don’t take the time to make the simple explanations.

It’s one of those things of: ‘We’ve always done it this way!’ And no real understanding.

The truth is that effort, strain and pain can actually result in injuries.

The correct procedure should be to encourage the student to relax. Not to put him in difficult poses and wait for a year or two until he finally relaxes, but to educate him as to how to relax individual muscles.

When an instructor does this the student suddenly gets better. He enters more and more difficult poses not by trying harder, but by relaxing his body, by learning that his muscles are fighting, and he must give them commands to relax.

The interesting phenomena is that the student’s mind will not clear out until he has relaxed.

Well, of course. A straining mind is not empty, is not clear of distractions, it is filled with one, huge distraction.

Being in the Moment

I was thinking,
it didn’t hurt too much,
and I started thinking about this.

When I was young,
first starting out,
I was always impressed by stories
of who could beat up who.
People in the martial arts I never heard of,
and we would argue who would win in a fight,
and wasn’t it cool.

And,
in spite of what I am about to say,
I don’t begrudge that.
If you’re young,
enjoy.
But after a while that sort of thing wears out.
Instead of perking up your ears in excitement,
you start to think,
‘who cares?’

And,
of course,
by this time you are really into the martial arts,
beyond the flush of youth,
and into the depths of your soul.

And,
you are learning how to get into the moment.

Nothing bores me worse than a war story.
Somebody suddenly wants to talk about
the time he hit somebody,
or got hit,
or the fight he saw,
even the fight he saw on TV.
And,
what’s even worse,
is when he wants to describe it blow by blow,
what happened in some other moment.

In other words,
he is not in the moment now,
he is not now,
he is yesterday.
Which is to say,
he is not conscious of now.

Martial arts are like climbing a mountain.
and sometimes you have to climb particularly rough cliff.

So what would you think
if somebody took you out there
day after day
and made you climb the same cliff?
Never a different cliff,
always the same cliff.
Day after day.
Boring.

We are not talking about polishing basics now,
which have to be done
fresh and alive
until you are doing them in unique moments of time.
We are talking about repeating the same moment in time.
We are not talking about doing something until every time you do it
it becomes a unique and separate moment,
we are talking about doing the same old same old thing,
the same moment in time.

Man,
that’s unconscious.

When somebody comes to me,
and starts telling me about the time
he and Billy Bob got drunk,
and this really funny thing happened,
I want to scream.

I’m supposed to stand there and listen to a recording.
Something he has told time and time again.
Never a deviation,
not because it is cool,
but because it is cool in his mind,
it is a moment of time he can’t get away from,
can’t forget.

He can’t get on with his life and find new and unique moments.

What I want is for him not to tell me a war story,
but to create a new and unique moment.
A moment of new now.
Where we laugh for the first time.
Not the hundredth time about something that was over
a hundred laughs ago.

Do you understand where you are going?

This is why you do forms.
Not to repeat them endlessly,
but to repeat them until they become intuition,
and each moment is fresh and unique and new.

And,
what brought me about to all of this
is pretty interesting.

I was thinking about the fact
that people who study the martial arts
usually go into business for themselves.
Or end up in highly creative and unique positions.
If you go to school,
then you get trained to work in a factory.
That is the purpose of school.
It was actually stated so by Ford,
or one of those old time idiots,
back a hundred years ago.
These money guys were actually talking about
how great it would all be
when they got the educational machine turned around
so that people did what they were told,
and became good, little workers in their factories.

So if you go to school,
you end up a cog in a machine.
If you study martial arts,
you learn about things like reality,
what hurts and what doesn’t,
what is good to do and what hurts people,
how to be responsible.
How to take responsibility for your life.

Not how to be a worker.

And that train of thought
is what got me off on this
‘be in the moment’ thing.

Odd how the mind works.
Who woulda thunk.

Anyway,
I do want to tell you how unique you are.
Surviving that thing people call ‘education,’
and actually setting out on a path of real responsibility,
real education,
and being the real you.

Keep going.
And,
make sure you keep going faster and further
bu matrixing.

Interestingly,
I’m still playing with the title.
I can’t find something that I like,
that sums it up,
so I put it up for a few days
change it,
and I’m thinking of changing it again.
But the title doesn’t mean much,
it is the matrixing and analysis inside,
that stays the same.
So I’ll keep you updated.

Now,
here’s a great win I thought I’d share…

Hey Al, I just wanted to give you an update on my progress and of course to say hello. I have been spending a lot of time going over your material DVD’s. At least five years and every time I go through the Matrix Karate material, I always get a another peace of knowledge. Even though I have read the same sentence a thousand times. I do have just about all of your courses,  missing just on or two. Matrix Karate is really the core, it is where the knowledge of the physics, concerning the martial arts, can be understood and where you can really experiment with your own structure. It enables you to move so fluidly from technique to technique effortlessly. As a matter of fact, there was a time when I would do the Matrix form one and then slip into form three. At first, I thought it was my Awareness slipping into unAwareness, I have also been studying Neutronics as well. But, something interesting happened, even while maintaining the focus, I found that I had purposely slipped into form three. There was something during the accidents, that felt as if the energy had intention. Since I was focusing my intention, I realized I had slipped into the energy flow. Now, what came of this, was  understanding the motion through space and that, at that time my intention was directed towards the thought of effortlessness, enabling me to find the energy that emanates from me and flow along those intentions.. That was two years ago and I have sense continued on with my studies and have gone thru KDW and Butterfly. Love the Blinding Steel course. I am currently working thru Pa Kua, enjoying it tremendously.
Well, I have yaked  enough. I just wanted to give an update and to say thank you, really. Your teachings have improved many aspects of my life. A humble bow Master Founder.

The is to delve deep enough to understand
martial arts as a manifestation of energy.
Not blocks and counters,
not how fast you can beat up somebody,
but yourself,
the energy you manifest as an artist.
Well done.

And,
now that Michael has brought it up,
it is called Matrix Karate for a reason.
Do you know what a matrix is?
It is a mathematical grid.
Most people don’t know where on the grid they are.
So they don’t tap into any of the energy they truly possess,
they just do blocks and punches,
get all excited as they skim the surface of their potential.
But that is all they are doing,
skimming the surface.
Once you matrix,
once you locate yourself on the ‘grid,’
so to speak,
everything changes.
You start to understand the rest of the grid,
and then you start to slip from move to move intuitively.
Logic has made that intuitive.
And the matrix,
the grid,
that I am speaking about is not
a physical chessboard you are standing on,
it is the visualization of potentials unleashed.

Matrixing is a logic which reveals all your potentials
and allows you, pushes you, into intuitivity.

It is different than anything else.

Sometimes it is subtle,
sometimes it is lightening in a bottle,
but it constantly and consistently changes you,
because it keeps uncovering new potentials.

As I said in the original ads…
If I gave you 3, 6, w, watermelon, and 8,
how long would it take you to count to ten?
But if I gave you 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
how long would it take you to count to ten?
And that is what Matrixing does,
it provides the logical structure,
puts the martial arts in the proper order,
and then you can’t not count to ten,
and then you can’t stop yourself
from finding new ways to use
the ‘numbers’ of the martial arts.
Which is to say the basics and technqiues,
making new forms,
and all sorts of other stuff
that is obscured by the classical method.

And the start is in Matrix Karate.
That is the crucial course.

How the Martial Arts Went Out of Control!

A glorious work out to you!
One more step towards paradise,
that’s what a work out is.
Make sure you take a couple of steps today.

Perhaps you’ve heard me say:

there is an art to destruction,
but the true art is in control.

When I was first learning
way back in the middle ages,
we took a lot of pride
to be perfect in our techniques.

We never threw a kick,
and missed and spun around,
like they do in MMA.
We threw a kick, and if it missed,
we retracted the foot right back to the ground.

And we never threw boxing punches,
like hooks and crosses and things.
Those thing broke the line of the body.
Yes,
they were stronger,
but if you had kicks you never worried about a boxer.
It was more important to hone your whole body,
to have good kicks, punches, blocks, and so on,
than it was to put everything into a wild haymaker,
or some other out of control movement.

I remember the first time i saw somebody
who was out of control in the martial arts.
I was at a tournament,
I think it was up at Richmond,
and this white belt,
when the match was begun,
would charge across the ring,
and start pummeling the other guy.
No art,
no focus,
no technique,
no experience,
no martial arts.
The shocking thing was that he got away with it.
No referee pulled him and his sensei aside,
and told him he would have to know karate
if he wanted to be in a karate tournament.

Not too long after that,
kickboxing started up.
Which was just boxing with a few kicks.
Mandatory kicks,
because it was easier
(required less art,
less attention to detail)
and more effective.

Well, of course it was more effective,
it was the ring,
and you couldn’t kick somebody in the balls.

And,
over the years,
there has been this continuous push
away from the fine tuned attention to detail,
the retraction of the kick and
the focus of the punch,
and now people just bang away
and call it karate,
or martial arts,
or whatever,
and it is.
Not by a long shot.
Doesn’t look like the stuff I learned
near fifty years ago.

The focus,
you see,
went from art,
to beating people up.

And instructors found it easy and mindless
to let people,
to encourage people,
to just throw hooks and jabs,
instead of learning how to generate energy,
and focus it precisely.

Ah, well.

Anyway,
I recommend my courses
if you want to resurrect the art.
I don’t box,
I don’t bang,
I get into the art,
the control,
the discipline that forges the spirit.

The True Language of the Martial Arts

Matrixing is the Rosetta Stone of the Martial Arts

Simply gorgeous day.
Unbelievable.
Perfection is a work out away!

Listen,
I know it’s been said before,
but not as importantly as it should be.
The Martial Arts arts are a language.

Without even going into Matrixing,
let me explain something that happened to me.

I went to school,
I was bright and energetic,
thought I was going to get smart,
and didn’t realize that I was already smart,
and that the real purpose was
to make me socially acceptable.
Which means…
do what you’re told.

So I signed up for a language.
This was when I was in sixth or seventh grade.
A summer school program,
and I was really excited1
I was going to learn a while language!
I went to class
I sat there and learned how to count,
the teacher made remarks about how the mouth
has to be a certain shape,
and I rapidly became incredibly bored,
and I floundered,
and my excitement disappeared
faster than sheep
at a convention of wolves.
Didn’t like languages,
didn’t want to learn languages.
Stupid stuff.

And,
if that wasn’t bad enough,
I tried again in high school,
and it was worse,
then,
when it came to college…
the hell with it.

So what happened?
What happened was a simple matrixing problem.
When you see your first matrix,
and this is in Matrix Karate,
you see how the matrix is used
to find out the things you didn’t understand,
the things that you didn’t even know were there.

When you learn language,
or just about any other subject in school,
there is no matrix,
so hidden at the edges,
and often in plain sight
are all the things you don’t understand.
And this confuses the things you do understand.

Here’s your new language,
call it Alioffstupe.
Count to ten.
The numbers are
one, dos, elebong, ta ta, 6, (blank), xxx.
Well, the numbers aren’t all there.
And the ones that are aren’t totally understandable,
or seem out of place,
and,
by the way,
your mouth is in the wrong shape so you’re wrong.

Still feel like learning my new language?
I don’t think so.
It is stupid,
and it doesn’t make sense,
so nobody in their right mind
would want to learn Alioffstupe.

Okay,
you know where I’m going with this…
when you are taught to learn the martial arts,
you need to count in another language.
The concepts are badly mangled zen,
and the teacher says you’re the wrong race!
Maybe in three or four lifetimes you can learn it,
but…not now.
Now the best you can hope for
is to bow extra low
to those who are shaped better than you.

So the martial arts are a language,
a move is a letter,
a technique is a word,
a form is a sentence,
and so on.
but without a matrix,
the letters are from different cultures,
the words are from different languages,
and the forms are…silly and don’t make sense.

Heck,
you can’t come across a forum today
where some fellow doesn’t lambast forms.

But,
all it means is that he doesn’t understand a language,
he was culture warped,
and he is protesting,
and trying to rationalize something he didn’t understand.

Look at that last sentence,
‘rationalize something he didn’t understand,’
right there,
that is the problem,
ALL THE PROBLEMS,
of all the martial arts.

And here’s the sad thing,
even if you are smart,
diligent,
and get through the mess,
you don’t have a method for teaching
that will bypass what you had to go through!
In other words,
without matrixing you’re passing on the martial arts
in the same unintelligible fashion
they have been passed on for millennium.
AND YOU DON’T EVEN SEE THE PROBLEM!
Heck,
it makes sense to you,
You made it through,
you didn’t see any problem,
and you don’t understand what is going on in the student’s mind.

And the problem is this:
if you don’t have matrixing,
you are lost in a jungle of bastard languages,
and don’t even know it.

Can you give up false learning,
to learn true learning,
and then make all that you have learned true?

Can you learn matrixing,
and save all your students?

Interesting question,
eh?

A Bit of Martial Arts Poetry

Good morning!
The sky is clear and empty,
and it is supposed to rain?
Well,
I’ll work out anyway.
Either way
doesn’t matter.
Just got to work out!

Can you see the math in this?

I like poetry for two reasons
First, it allow me to express myself,
it allows me to force concepts into a cage,
like a beast to be viewed for true worth.
Second, I like the mathematics of it.
I like the order and logic of it all.
And here’s the thing…

Mathematics means ‘knowledge,’
mathematics is method of measuring the universe.
All art is a measure of motion.
Timing is the mathematics of distance closing.
The structure of the body is geometry applied.
And you know you have mastered
the mathematics of the martial arts
when you begin searching for the math (logic)
in the rest of the universe,
when you apply the math of the martial arts
to the rest of the universe.

Music is an obvious math,
a measurement of frequencies through time.
Is that not the martial arts, too?

Carving a sculpt
or painting,
is that not a study of geometry?
Is that not the martial arts, too?

Even the emotion behind these things,
is a form of math.
Emotions can be expressed as frequencies,
and they can be displayed as petulant performances of children,
or heart stopping expressions of the soul.
Is that not the martial arts, too?

I heard about this when I was in school,
but school isn’t where you learn,
and it wasn’t until I got out of school,
that I began searching.
Maybe you’re like me,
maybe you ‘heard about,’
and then were left to your own devices,
to wonder or not.
instead of actually learning
how to tap into the expressions of the soul
which you are capable of.

When I heard about these things,
I was driven,
and,
ultimately,
being driven to create,
in spite of alls schooling,
I put these expressions down in matrixing and neutronics.
The sole purpose being to create a Martial ARTIST.

Not a fighter,
not somebody who contests against life,
agaisnt the things he creates,
against the truth of himself,
but somebody who understands so well he doesn’t have to fight.
That is the point of it all.
That is the expression of man
brought to its final evolution.

So here’s a poem,
and I hope you can find some math in it,
or at least some martial arts,
and,
maybe,
a bit of yourself.

I think about being a martial artist

I think sometimes I should have been a general,
in charge of hordes of men fighting glorious war,
but those men are all dead or dull in the spirit,
and with time we forget just what they fought for.

I think sometimes I should have been president
leading a country to greatness as tragedy befalls
but history holds great men as scoundrels
and the changes they brought is as slavery calls

I think sometimes I should have been a mother
giving life to man throughout all of the ages
but the seeds raised mighty blow with the wind
so few mothers then become wise as the sages

I think sometimes of the follies I have seen
as men contest men and deny their own brothers
living lives bare of honor and selling their souls
for the tokens of baubles or the joys of a lover

I think sometimes I have fought my whole life
not against men but against my own sword
and in the end I was the victor and worthy of honor
I put down the sword, and knew the true word

Who do I fight and who do I love are reflections of me
different sides of the jewel that is life incarnate
searching through life to find a higher good
overcoming the lifetimes of this thing called fate

Defining the Energy of the Universe

The Real Thought Process Behind Matrixing in the Martial Arts

Good morning!
Another day in paradise.
Paradise being defined,
of course,
by your work out.

The journey to Martial Arts Mastery

Now,
there were a couple of things I did to figure out energy.
and these things led to all sorts of discoveries.

First,
I read the classics.
I read all the books on zen,
I read the tai chi classics,
I read every book,
magazine,
article,
scoured the library,
I could.

This was back in the late sixties early seventies,
no internet.
I had to do it old school.
And,
truth,
there just wasn’t a lot of stuff out there.
We knew about judo,
Karate was the coming thing,
and Bruce Lee hadn’t even been heard of,
let alone tai chi,
or all the esoteric Chinese arts.

Still,
I just kept reading,
over the years,
and the data accumulated,
and an interesting thing happened.

All those mystical things I was reading
began to resolve for two reasons.

One,
my experiences,
my work outs,
were accumulating.
I was gaining a real life data base
of experiences that were relevant.

Two,
I found that these experiences,
for the most part,
weren’t mystical,
they could be defined with physics.

Here’s the trick,
it took four or five years of doing forms
to discover the truth of grounding,
of sinking the weight.
Then the mystical explanations made sense.
And I could say things like ‘grounding,’
and now that it was a more accurate description
than things like
‘root like a tree.’

Mind you,
root like a tree was accurate,
but it was based on definitions
that were not physics,
and could only be described by
comparisons with nature.

The ancients knew nature,
they didn’t know physics.

The trick,
of course,
was to tie all this stuff together,
which I did with matrixing.

Now,
let’s talk about the physics.
The body is a thing.
An object.
It floats through space.
You can define it two ways.
You can define it from the inside out,
trying to make sense of the bones and veins,
the girders and hydraulics,
the nerves and muscles,
and so on.

That isn’t bad,
has to be done,
but it is only half.
And,
it is a half that gets badly abused
because people want to go whole hog,
and forget (obscure) the other half.
They get too scientific,
and start limiting their body by science.

You can only do this much weight in that manner
because the scientific testing proves it.
And there is no mention of the importance,
and overriding intention
of the human spirit.

Or,
you can go from the outside in.
Everything is space,
your body is space,
and that is the other half of the equation.

The problem is that you have to go through the body
to discover space.
It’s hard to just start with space,
unless you want to just study zen or yoga.

So you study space,
and you find that space is much bigger than the body,
and that if you get big enough in space,
you can look back at the body
and figure out the correct way of working it.

Here’s a small progression I worked out
to illustrate this:

There is ONE individual awareness running the body.

There are TWO sides to the body.
(This can be extrapolated many ways:
top and bottom
right and left
inside outside
open or close
and so on)

There are THREE points to a triangle
(the triangle must be used to brace a base
and project energy…in other words,
to strike or block.
This is how you define how the body works)

There are major FOUR directions
(up, down, right, left
the compass points
four basic blocks
and so on)

There are FIVE elements that define the universe,
and which can be used to define a body
or motion (in one sense)
These five elements can from culture to culture

And i kept going,
using numbers to define the universe,
the properties of the universe,
and of the body,
and so on.

But all of this construction is worthless
unless one has first defined space.
Without space you can’t have all this.
Space is the context for things.
Space is the medium in which we have being.
Space is the truth of martial arts,
and of all life.

Of course,
there are different kinds of space,
but the main thing is that space enables us to have distance
which enables us to have perspective,
and suddenly we have life.

Anyway,
didn’t mean to go nuts there,
but thought you’d like to have the real meaning
behind the ‘empty’
in ‘Empty Hands.’

Or,
what zen is looking for.
Or what one must establish to do Yoga.
Or,
for that matter and especially,
Tai Chi Chuan.

Without an understanding of this stuff,
in some sort of structure,
your martial arts are useless.

Turning Up the Chi Heat

Listen,
here’s a bit of data that not many people know,
and don’t understand if they do.

The word tan tien,
the hieroglyphics that make that word,
have to do with a fire giving off heat.
Some linguist can take me to task,
but that’s my understanding.
The tan tien is an oven giving off heat.

Now,
here’s the funny thing,
most forms of martial arts
do not cause the tan tien
to generate heat.

It’s true.

Yes,
a little heat.
But there is so much emphasis on correct posture
that people miss the ‘incorrect posture’
that is necessary for giving off heat.

I know Karate is that way,
most Kung Fu styles are that way,
and I know that even I
sometimes misrepresent it.

But the reason I misrepresent this fact
of the tan tien giving off heat
is because learning proper alignment
is more important.
At least,
in the beginning.

So let’s assume you aren’t a beginner,
and want to learn about
the real alignment necessary
for your tan tien to give off heat.

Be subtle when you do what I am about to tell you.

Tuck the hips,
and round the back.

In pa kua I refer to this as
‘turtle backing.’

And,
you will find this posture
in arts such as pa kua and using i.
Not so much Tai Chi,
though some instructors will note it,
but not normally the Yang instructors.

Now,
do your form with tucked hips
and rounded back.
Make sure your body is relaxed,
and you tighten only your fists.
Make sure you are properly grounded with your feet.

After doing a half dozen forms,
or repetition of a form,
go sit down somewhere and wait.

Sure enough,
if you’ve done it right,
you will feel a sensation of heat
rising up through your body.

And,
the sensation can get QUITE strong.

So,
what do we do with this?

Well,
heat is a manifestation of energy,
so if you are generating heat,
you are generating energy.
Simple dimple.

Now all you have to do is think of your fists
when you strike from that ‘back rounded’ position,
and the energy will start to go into your fists.

And,
a note,
proper body alignment,
taking into account
that it is now okay to round the back
and learn how to line energy through it,
will increase energy to all parts of your body.
