The Difference Between Zen and Chi

Zen and Chi are Different, Here’s How…

Let me give you some fascinating data
about zen and chi and stuff,
but let me start out with a basketball analogy.

I was shooting baskets the other day
and really got into the zen of it.

If you look at the rim,
you miss.
If you look at the backboard,
you miss.
If you look at the space inside the ring,
swoosh.

you miss.
If you push the shot,
you miss.
If you let it roll off the fingers effortlessly,
swoosh.

If you think about your body,
you miss.
If you think about the space in the ring,
until you forget your body,
swoosh.

It’s actually very interesting to do this,
and you learn something.
Do things effortlessly,
keep your mind on the goal,
and life works.

But,
since we are about martial arts,
and since my understanding of zen
came form martial arts,
let’s consider a few things.

On the ‘Matrixing Chi’ page
of Monster Martial Arts,
I put out a candle from over a foot away.
That took a lot of zen.
I had to empty my muscles.
I had to focus on the candle
until I forgot my body.
This is just a thumbnail of what I did,
there is a lot more in the book,
but it gives you an idea
of the direction I was taking.

The point here,
however,
is can you do that type of mentality
for every move in every form and every technique
in every martial art?

The candle trick is a trick,
but it has long reaching,
all encompassing effects.

What is a perfect kick?
Can you look at the target hard enough
so that you forget your own body,
and just let it happen?

Most people are into muscles,
and they miss the effortlessness required
for a perfect kick.

Don’t get me wrong,
the beginner should use muscles,
he needs to build up a certain amount of muscle,
but at a certain point
he should give up muscle.

Many people say that when you don’t use muscle
you are using chi.
They wouldn’t be wrong,
but zen is different than chi,
though there is often overlap.
Definitions and descriptions are different,
makes for confusion.
Zen is empty.
Chi is energy.
You can’t have one without the other,
but the process of creating nothingness with the mind (zen)
is different than creating the energy of chi.
But you can’t have some degree of one
without the other.

The Secret of a Long Body in the Martial Arts

Secrets to a Long Life in the Martial Arts

I did Tai Chi in the fog this morning.
Oddly, a warm fog.
But spectacular.
I close my eyes
so I can better not see my body,
Until it feels like I have no body
and am pure me.
Pure ‘I am.’
Finally,
lower the hands
and the rest of the day
is filled with light and energy.
I recommend it to you.

survivalist martial artLet me tell you a couple of secrets…

First,
you don’t need much sleep.
Eight hours sleep is what mothers foist on their children
so they can have a little peace and quiet.
Thomas Edison got by on something like four hours a night,
and a catnap during the day.
So only sleep when you are tired,
not because the clock says to,
or everybody else is.
I get some of my best work done
when everybody else is sleeping.

Second,
while you should gear yourself towards organic foods,
you can pretty much eat what you want to…
IF YOU ARE WORKING OUT EVERY DAY!
Man, let me yell that again.
Have you ever noticed that the people
who hang out in health food stores
are often gaunt and ill shapen?
They are eating the right things,
but without the exercise
it doesn’t mean much.
My general rule is to stay away from synthetics
(pesticides, hormones, additives,
wax, coloring, GMO, etc.)
but I can eat what I want
because working out every day
detoxes me naturally.

Third,
make your muscles long.
Here’s the trick,
your body is compacted all day long.
Gravity pushes on it,
you push on objects,
push, push, push.
So pull it.
Elongate it.
Lengthen it.
Your body elongates a half inch or so while sleeping,
it shrinks a half inch or so
while walking around during the day.
When your body is injured
it is often because it has been compacted
(hit upon and forcibly shrunk)
So stretch it out.
Here’s the thing,
a body that is compacted
does not react as fast.
It loses fluidity of motion.

Now,
here’s something most people don’t consider:
working out doesn’t make your body long.
There is impact, there is force,
and the body compacts.
Gets healthier for the work,
but the muscles don’t get long.
So you stretch before class.
But…do you stretch after class?
Do you stretch at odd times during the day?

Now,
there’s a lot more to be considered,
meat vs veggies,
more sleep after injury
what type of martial art gives the best work out
and so on and so on.
But,
these things have to do with balance
and finding your personal path.
The three things, I have mentioned here,
forget obsessing on sleep,
eat what you want as long as you work out,
and have long muscles,
are the key to it all.
Do these things
and you will find your body getting
strong and stronger and stronger.

Okaly doggaly
let me give you my recommendation
for making long muscles.
Yoga.
Now,
oddly,
Yoga is harder to do than martial arts.
That’s if you get into the deep postures,
focus on the hours long meditation,
and so on.

But if you just take the basic postures
and flow through them tai chi style,
maybe holding each posture for a breath cycle or two,
then yoga actually works a lot better
than some of the more extreme methods.

You just sit or stand or lie down,
and let the body stretch.

And here’s something I found interesting:
what muscles are you using when you stretch?
To stand and just extend the arms towards the alls,
what muscles are you using?
I mean,
the muscles are connected to the skeleton,
and the muscles are all ‘pulling’ muscles,
So how do you ‘pull’ the body longer
when the muscles are on the inside?
Weird, eh?

Anyway,
the program I designed for Yoga
is called Yogata,
Yogata stands for
‘Yoga Kata,’
and it does what I describe here.
Lengthens and relaxes the muscles,
easy to do,
more flow,
and it REALLY works.

Excellent for edging around injuries,
finding extra balance in the body,
and it DEFINITELY makes the muscles longer and stronger.

Which of the Five Secrets is is this guy not doing?

Okay,
let’s talk martial arts.
When i was a white belt
I had an obsession.
I would sit back in my head,
and watch my motion,
and it seemed to take forever.
From the start of punch to the stop,
I felt like I could write a 500 word school report.
Slow.

As time went on,
my speed picked up,
but there was always this thing
of being in my head,
and being slow.
I was easy to block.
The funny thing was that
I did okay at freestyle,
so I was fast enough,
but my perception of myself
really ate at me.
I decided upon a punch,
I didn’t want to see it lollygag.

Time kept passing,
and one day I CBMed.
I achieved Coordinated Body Motion.
And suddenly things were different.

Let me change tack to explain this difference.

I went to my instructor,
shortly after I CBMed,
and asked him if he had ever had
anything mystical happen to him.
He knew EXACTLY what I was talking about.

He said,
“I was practicing forms once,
and suddenly I was looking down on my body
through a tube 60 feet long.”

Now,
that wasn’t what I experienced,
and it may be different from other people’s experiences,
but it was the ‘mystical’ experience that defined
when he stopped thinking about doing things
from the viewpoint of being inside his head,
and when he CBMed,
when he lost reaction time,
and started doing things as an aware human being,
and not as a piece of meat type body.

Well,
where did you think the martial arts were going to take you?

Anyway,
Once I broke throughI had a plethora of experiences like this.
All unique,
all expressions of myself
beyond what meat body humans lost in reaction time,
and not possessed of intuitive abilities,
expect,
or understand of themselves.

So,
if you have waded through the mystical of what I just said,
let me give you the EXACT formula
for doing what I have just described:
achieving CBM,
seeing yourself through a tube from 60 feet away,
losing reaction time and becoming intuitive,
or whatever.

One,
breath.

Two,
relax.

Three,
ground.
(sink your weight into the ground)

Four,
fix your body alignment.

Five,
CBM.

Now,
I tell people this in almost every book I write,
it is the one thing I am redundant about,
and thank God,
for it is the secret of the martial arts.
Here’s the problem.

Everybody breathes,
but usually not to the tan tien.

People don’t relax,
unless they are beaten into it.
Unless they are worked so hard
they give up being tense.
Good reason for those big classes.

Usually only the wudan arts
(Tai Chi, Pa Kua, etc.)
understand how to sink the weight.

Nobody understands alignment.
They achieve proper alignment only by accident,
they are victims of the forms that have been passed down,
and the bad teaching that have promulgated with those forms.

Nobody understands CBM,
except in the mystical.
The closest they come is,
‘Use the body as one unit.’

Consider the matrixing definition of CBM.
To start all parts of the body at the same time;
to stop all parts of the body at the same time.
There is more to it than this,
but you can see the scientific bent here.
Not mystical,
something that might happen,
sometime,
if you are lucky,
but something that can be understood,
worked on,
mastered.

Anyway,
those five rules are the secret of it all.
Now,
for whatever reason,
I obsessed on those five things.
I figured them out from reading
ancient martial arts writings,
and translating everything into English concepts.

I would read and think about
‘use your body as one unit,’
until I figured out…
start every part of the body together,
stop every part of the body together.

And I did this for ALL the concepts.
So I broke through the mystical barrier,
and matrixing is my attempt to bring others along.

Now,
if you’re interested,

everything is in there.

but then we start rocking.

I give you the actual rules of alignment,
how to make your form perfectly aligned.

How to align your techniques so they ALWAYS work,
the real physics of technical application

on how to do the martial arts.
Information that has been unknown,
or done by accident,
throughout the history of man.

Dancing Martial Arts…How Gay!

Better Martial Arts Movements

Happy New Year!
And happy work out…
every day for the next 365 days.
You deserve it.

Here’s something I realized,
which helped me,
hope it helps you.

karate training manualI was reading a forum the other day,
it was some offbeat subject
on some martial arts forum,
and this guy did a rant on old movie musicals.
We’re talking people like Fred Astair, Gene Kelly, and so on.

This fellow said something like,
“These old black and white movies are gay!
How could anybody watch a guy and a girl,
dance for five minutes!
And there’s even movies where two guys are dancing!
how gay!”

How interesting.
Art is gay.
And he was holding himself up as a martial artist.
Maybe he was too much martial?
And not enough artist?

To be sure, dancing is not martial arts,
there is not much in the way of fist and defense.
But dancing is motion,
and martial arts have motion,
so the two have common ground.
Further,
I have seen many martial artists who were good,
but could have been better,
had they a bit of the poise and grace.

And,
here’s an interesting tidbit,
before I discovered martial arts,
when I was going to high school,
and then college,
I used to be a thespian.
That’s right,
an actor.
And I was in all the plays and musicals
that my schools had to offer.
Loved it.
Good looking girls there, too.
But,
good looking girls aside
(can’t believe I said that!)
one time I was in the play
West Side Story.
I was one of the Sharks.
And we were choreographing the big rumble
between the Sharks and Jets,
and I picked out the biggest guy I could,
and I went to him with an idea.
I hit you,
you hit me,
then I hit and you duck,
and you pick me up and throw me over your shoulder.
Man,
it was great!
We rehearsed it,
went to the director and showed her what we had.
She loved it!
So the night of the play
the rumble started.
I swung and he acted like I had hit him,
then he swung,
and hit me.
Bingo…right on the jaw,
and I was out like a light.
In front of 500 people,
The audience didn’t realize what had happened,
but the director did,
and my partner did,
and somehow,
I don’t know how,
I managed to come to enough to stagger off stage.
But I was knocked out.
So much for dancing being non-violent.

Anyway,
the big hint I wanted to give you has to do with this.
During the holidays they sometimes play old movies on TV.
Find the ones with Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly,
look for some other names,
check out how the masters move.

There was a fellow name of Baryshnikov,
considered the best in the world at ballet,
and he said his favorite dancer was Fred Astaire,
wished he could move like him.

Fred would do things like dance with a standing lamp.
He would roll that thing around,
tilt it and catch it
until you thought the standing lamp was alive!
There is never a hesitation,
never a hint of a stall,
it is actually one of the ONLY examples
of perfection in motion
on this planet.

Now if only a standing lamp was a martial arts weapon, eh?
We’d all be practicing the Fred Astaire Kata.

And,
not to leave out the gals,
Fred had a partner name of Ginger Rogers,
and one time some reporter asked her
if it was difficult to dance with Fred.
She replied,
“Heck, I did everything he did,
backwards,
and in high heels.”

Now that is perfection of motion.

So drive safe tonight,
or just stay home and do your imbibing,
and check out some of these masters of motion
and see if you can pick up anything about balance,
grace and poise,
or anything else
that will help make your kata perfect.

Using Martial Arts to Boil Water with your Bare Hands

I was watching the news,
murder and stabbings
crime and politics,
at risk of becoming sad,
which is,
after all,
the intent of most news programs,
I turned the tube off,
cursing myself for turning it on,
and go work out.

Silence greets me,
I listen to the complaints and reliefs of my body,
and all becomes sacred.

Don’t you see it?
The world goes away,
and I am left with me,
and that knowledge that I am alive,
and,
thus,
life becomes great.

Listen,
here’s something you might not know,
the old classics
concerning the martial arts,
actually say some of the things
I say in Matrixing.
They just say it in words from another time,
another place,
a time and place without a science to accurately describe
what the martial artists are going through.

I get a kick out of the old classics,
read them every once in a while
and change the language into English and physics,
and it all makes sense.

Here’s one,
the tan tien boils the chi…

Well,
the body is a motor,
the legs are leads,
and the tan tien is actually an energy generator.
Shift and twist back and forth
through the stances,
make energy go up and down the legs,
and you excite the generator.

Don’t my words make more sense?
And yet they are nothing than an accurate interpretation
of ancient writing.

Writing by the uneducated who were doing their best
to describe the experiences they were going through
and what they had discovered.

Well,
to move into the future a bit,
try this exercise,

Close your eyes
stand in a horse stance,
start shifting side to side,
front stance to back,
twisting the energy up and down the legs.
After a while you become aware only of your legs,
now,
having reached that stage, do this:
imagine the space between the top of the legs as a table top.
Place a cup on the table top,
imagine your motion as an intent
to swirl the liquid
within the cup.

Do this for a while and you can boil water with your hands.
Of course,
it depends upon how unlimited you can imagine yourself,
which means,
it depends upon the strength of your visualization,
and,
ultimately,
it depends on the strength of your discipline.
Have you done your forms enough to control your form?
Unloose your imagination?
Be you?

Now,
I know a lot of people,
upon reading these instructions
will nod their heads and say,
uh huh,
yeah,
and go on about their lives.

And there is the tragedy of those who set up a work out time,
practice as I have indicated,
do it for a while,
and get bored and stop.

And,
I know a few of you are going to go somewhere with this.
Cool.

Now,
I encourage you all,
and even if you don’t go all the way,
even if you just nod your head and move on,
what I have said will be good for you.

But,
for those few who make it all the way
and boil water in their hands,
I want to say something to you…
I know that only people who can make water boil in their hands
will understand these words…

be redactive in your elementalizing

Wow,
I could hear somebody a hundred years from now,
sighing in relief.

except for some specific advice on just learning
not to be distracted,
to extend intention
as a manifestation of awareness.

Hello Al,

I hope everything is well with you. I have studied the mind and self hypnosis and meditation and qigong and other such mental disciplines since I was about 9 years old. Well after going over the Master Instructor course again in a very thorough fashion it hit me to solve these meditative disciplines and well. It worked. I identified three basics of all meditative disciplines.
Focus, Visualization, and Receptivity (Better Known to most folks as Relaxation or Letting Go).  Every meditative practice (including qigong and martial arts) uses these three basics.

Focus is simply holding awareness on a given thing.

Visualization is creating a thought or image

Receptivity is relaxing and listening or trance state work etc.

For example in martial arts as meditative practice one could:
Focus on an aspect of the practice
visualize energy, applications, etc.
Or practice the forms and be aware of the body and how it moves.

This demystifies meditation in an incredibly useful way. There are three skills to work on. No more saying I focus on my third eye and chant the proper mantra because this is how we meditate. Rather a clear precise aim for gaining the benefits and skills of meditation without needlessly being lost in the mire of traditions and forms. A Western Hermeticist can focus on Kabalah, the Daoist can do Qigong and martial arts, or the Christian can meditatively read the Bible but the inescapable truth is all these seemingly disparate arts only differ in focus and intention NOT in the skills used.

Well I’ve chewed on your ear long enough. I’d like to hear your take on all this stuff. Take care and thanks again for all the help and education!

if you do forms,
you are meditating.
Many people don’t realize this,
think they are just exercising,
body building,
and so on.
But the truth of the matter is
when you are doing a form,
you are focusing awareness
on precise moves.

You are therefore meditating.

You have to invest your body with intention,
which is the focus of awareness,
and you have to make the transition
from posture to posture
without losing sight of the focus.

That is all meditation.

Perhaps you understand what I mean
when I say martial artists are a hope of the world.

Through this meditative practice
they become more focused,
more aware,
which is to say smarter,
more able and competent.

These qualify as ‘silk reeling’ exercises,

How Long Does It Take to Get a Black Belt?

Can You Earn A Black Belt in A Year?

Well, it certainly doesn’t take 4 or 5 years to get a black belt, and that is in any martial art, Karate, Kung Fu, Taekwondo, or whatever.

I say this off the top because people think it does take that long, and this is one of those big lies that has been foisted upon the public.

Chuck Norris earned his black belt in Tang Soo Do karate in about a year and a half.

Mike Stone, one of the best tournament fighters ever, and the fellow who taught Priscilla Presley Karate, earned his in something like 7 months.

So you can earn a black belt in karate pretty fast.

In fact, back in the sixties, it used to take about two years. That’s right. And fellows who were above average and dedicated could get there in about a year.

So what happened to make it longer and harder to get expert ranking in the martial arts?

Tracy’s Kenpo Karate hired a fellow from the Arthur Murray Dance Schools to put karate sales to contracts. The contracts were based on a four year program.

What this meant is that people were in contract, committed to a four year program of paying fees.

Can you spell ‘MONEY?’

It wasn’t long before every martial art jumped on the bandwagon.

All the talk of zen and noble warriors, and it was about a buck.

When I wrote ‘Outlaw Karate: the Secret of the One Year Black Belt,’ I had this in the back of my mind.

Me in 1974. Karate had just gone to contracts, but I could see how it used to be.

I had studied Kenpo, and knew how it was based upon selling a technique or two every week for for years.

I had studied classical karate, and I had seen how people loaded up the systems with all sorts of stuff, just to make it longer to teach so they could keep students.

I had also come across the facts I recited earlier, about it taking only a year or two, and I was interested in returning the art to that rate of training.

And, let me say something else, I saw that people who learned by those faster methods were better.

They were better because they weren’t overloaded with data from multiple arts, they weren’t trying to absorb exercises and drills designed to make training time longer, they were better because they were aimed at a goal, and that goal had not been spread out over time.

Spread out, which is to say dissipated, weakened, diluted.

Which is to say that because they hadn’t been sold a bill of goods, they were not confused or sidetracked in their training.

I actually discovered several different methods of getting a person to black belt in a year or less, and this in any art.

More important, I discovered ways of putting the martial arts to logic; a logic that is not inherent to the eastern methods of learning.

Outlaw Karate: The Secret of the One Year Black Belt, is one of those methods.

it is one of the better ones because it reduces karate training to the basics, to the methods used back in the sixties. No frills, just the hardest core techniques that worked in a fight, and which built a karate fighter out of anybody who was willing to work hard, and keep his eye on the target.

The name ‘Outlaw Karate’ comes from the fact that I thought I was going ‘outside’ the boundaries of Karate. Actually, I found out that I wasn’t, I was just returning to a harder time, a no nonsense time when people knew they could get where they were going by applying themselves.

A time not configured by ‘contracts’ and the desire to make as much money as you could from a student.

I suggest, if you are serious about Karate, and want to break away from the bushwah and the frippery of contract sales, that you get the book. Focus on one form every two months.

Schedule a couple of hours every night, and go for it.

Do the forms, get a partner and do the techniques, do the drills and freestyle.

At the end of a year you will be in the best shape of your life. Your reaction time will be non -existent and you will be moving intuitively.

Most important, you will be a living testament to the way the martial arts used to be.

Now,
a couple of things…
John has pointed out that
the material of the Master Instructor course
is true,
and sets a standard.
And this is important,
and I am going to say something rather controversial in a few paragraphs,
may even cause some hate mail,
but I sort of enjoy hate mail.
Makes me grin.

So John mentions teaching Outlaw Karate…
and not being certified.
So let’s talk about certification.

Who gave the first black belt?
Well,
whoever it was,
he wasn’t certified,
he simply
convinced everybody he knew what he was doing,
and he offered his blessings
and made up this thing called a certificate.

Now,
there are two certificates in the martial arts that mean something.

First,
that certificate you spent a couple of years bleeding for.
Sweating,
working out every day of the week,
learning a method
that makes human beings
out of these animal earthlings.

Okay,
who’s to say your art is any good?
Might be a rotten art,
you know?

Still,
that damned certificate means something!
You Fing earned it!
You paid for it with your sweat and soul.

That brings us to the second certificate you should prize,
The Master Instructor Certificate.

Your first certificate,
in the art of
Aikido or Karate or Kung Fu
or something somebody put together,
it represents your blood and tears,
your hard work over time,
the polish of your soul.

The second certificate,
the Master Instructor Certificate,
represents that you understand
what you are doing.

The second certificate,
even though there is no blood and bruises behind it,
shows that you are no longer a ‘monkey see monkey do’ instructor,
but rather…
somebody who understands the martial arts.

There is a huge difference between somebody who does the martial arts,
no matter how well,
and somebody who understands what they are doing.

And,
to be honest,
if your art is a lousy martial art,
once you do The Master Instructor Course,
it will become a good martial art.
You will suddenly understand
the WHY behind the stances
the WHY behind making ANY technique work
the WHY behind internal power
the WHY behind EVERY move in your forms
and how to get the idea of WHY
from inside your head to inside your student’s head.

you will understand how to make your art perfect,
and in some cases,
you will understand why you need to change certain things
to make your art perfect.

Okay,
want to hear something interesting?

Some 30 or so years ago
I lived in Ukiah, California
As I have done in every town I have lived in
I taught martial arts.
One of the people I taught was Tom Mann.
Tom then opened a martial arts school in Willits, California.
he taught for a number of years,
his student took over at a certain point,
and they had students who went out to other areas
and taught this thing
which I called Kwan Bup.
So,
one night a couple of years ago
I got curious,
and I googled ‘Willits Kwan Bup.’
What I came up with was this link…

starring a fellow name of Sono Carrigg.

Now,
it is obvious that this fellow hasn’t done the Master Instructor course.
And his form,
if he really did five years of training,
is lacking.

I happened to be up in Willits last year
and I saw Tom,
and I asked him about Sono Carrigg.
I asked Tom who had taught Sono.

Tom said,
“I don’t know.
I know I didn’t,
and I asked the guys who teach around here,
even from other schools,
nobody knows who taught him!”

Hmmm.
How interesting.

Now,
at this point
you might be wondering,
was I upset that he was teaching my art?
Was I enraged that he represented himself
as in my lineage?
Nah.

What he teaches is his problem,
not mine.

Here is a point to be understood…

Never get upset at how little a man knows,
just do something about how little you know.

That is a truth.

So now I have John Enger,
most respectful,
honorable
(if you took a look at his website
you can see that he insists upon
surrounding himself with competent martial artists.
Heck,
two of them have Master Instructor Certificates.)
and John is teaching part of my art.

That’s fine,
I want people sharing my art.
I don’t care if you take it apart,
you might make something better.
I don’t care if you call it something else,
you are making it your art.

But I would wish
that you do the Master Instructor Course
before you teach ANY art.

If you wish certification in an art,
we can set up a video test.
But if you have the Master Instructor Cert,
signed by me,
then that is all you need,
because that means that you not only bled and fought,
but you understand,
and,
most important of all,
that from this point on
you won’t be passing down some sort of hackeysack kung fu,
but something that you fought for and…
UNDERSTAND!

There are too many people out there
teaching,
who don’t know WHY they are doing forms
who don’t know WHY the techniques are done the way they are done
who are good at convincing the news media
that they know something
but who haven’t studied with anybody
and don’t know anything,

And I told John,
Teach what you want,
call it what you want,
I know that since you have done The Master Instructor Course,
your teaching will be true.

I hope you guys understand what I am saying here,
I am not necessarily a believer in large associations.
Large associations tend to breed politics,
politics breed policing the martial arts,
which leads to passing state requirements
and a board of certification
and a certificate signed by politicians.

I do believe in your hard work,
and I believe that The Master Instructor Course
will help you out
and bring us a better you
and a better martial art
and a better martial future.

It all comes down to one man.
Not an organization,
not outrage because somebody down the street
is a lousy martial artist…
it all comes down to you.

And I know that The Master Instructor Course
will make a better you,
and make a better art.

Using Aikido to Control a Mob

Control the Mob Mind Using Aikido Guiding Principles

The essence of Using Aikido must be based upon harmony. Harmony is to go in the same direction. Thus, to use Aikido to control a Mob one must go in the same direction as the mob.

So the mob decides to hang somebody. Make sure no video cameras are on you when you yell out, “I’ll get the rope!”

You have now gone in the same direction as the mob, and, here’s an interesting thing, they now rely on you for something. So you have not only gone in the same direction, but you have taken the first step in putting them in another direction.

Don’t let go of the rope. As long as they want the rope, they will follow you. So lead them down an alley. Or suddenly stop and say something really weird. “I have to have a hamburger.”

I know, sounds funny, but somebody is going to laugh and go, “WTF?”

Now, a mob isn’t a bunch of individuals, it is a bunch of weak minds melded into one mind. As long as there is rage in the mind it is going to hang somebody. But if you can get one single person to laugh, then you have splintered one person off. You have brought this individual out of the rage and back to his own mind. So look at him, shove him away, and he will be glad to go.

What you are trying to do here is to splinter individuals off the mob mind. Do enough of this and there is no more mob. These things have a curve, and you have to supplant the mob mind with the desire of the individual to be himself.

Another thing you can do to try and mess up the mob is introduce another thought. Remember, the mob has one loose mind, and it can only hold one thought. So if you can introduce another thought, the mob will begin to self-destruct.

Marching down the street, looking for Johnson, you suddenly yell, “Wait a minute! It’s Smith we want!”

Argument bursts out. Excellent, the mob is now arguing with itself.

The point here is that you use the flow of the mob, take it over, and change the direction. Or, you split the flow of the mob. Or…you can actually come up with a variety of methods for derailing a mob using the concept of Aikido to first insert yourself, then alter the path of the thought.

Now, if you tried Karate, or Kung Fu, or some other martial concept you would end up fighting somebody.

But Aikido is unique in the application of harmony. The trick is to study it enough so that you have a larger mind tan a mob. Not just large enough to splinter from the mob by yourself, and stand back and watch, but large enough to encompass the mob with your own spiritual harmony.

And, here is the great thing, you can use the aikido principles outlined here to control any number of things.

A company is a bunch of individuals come together to a common purpose. You can derail or alter that purpose.

A government is a bunch of people come together, and governments are always being swayed this way or that depending on the person who guides it.

A marriage is a couple of people in common purpose.

Any of these ‘groups’ can be controlled by simply hijacking the purpose or somehow altering the path, and the easiest way to do this is with nothing more than a bit of simple harmony.

Shoot ‘Em Again! It’s Only a Stun Gun!

The Problems of Stun Gun Self Defense

Stun guns became popular for self defense a number of years ago. People touted them as a more humane way of taking bad guys down, and now they have had a number of years to become tried and tested. Unfortunately, their are a few problems with using a stun gun for self defense.

survivalist martial artFirst, let’s address the human angle. No bullets, no surgery, you can zap the hell out of a guy!

Well, not really, shooting somebody with 50,000 volts is rough on the body. If that body has a weak heart, or is even weakened from excess drugs or drinking, it could be killed.

And, having said that, there have been a couple of videos on the net where police sit back and zap the hell out of some poor shmuck. Grinning, and secure in the knowledge that they can torture without worrying about leaving bullet holes.

Humane? No. Dangerous? Yes. Period.

Another point we should take up is the use of a stun gun by Joe or Jane Citizen. Do you know how long it takes to get a stun gun out of holster or purse? And is Joe or Jane a sure shot? They haven’t practiced, so can we be sure they will hit the target first time every time?

So the conclusion is obvious, stun guns are not excellent for self defense, and they do have drawbacks and dangers.

Is it better than shooting somebody?

Maybe, if you actually manage to get a shot off and the bad guy doesn’t have a heart attack.

So what is the alternative?

I personally believe that all police officers should have martial arts training. I believe Tokyo had its police officers all study Aikido, and I think that a study of Aikido, or Tai Chi, or any non-aggressive martial art would be a hundred times better than excessive force and the use of deadly force weapons.

Look, here is the brutal fact, if the police feel they have to arrest somebody they won’t let up. This has the consequence of making police into bullies.

The counter argument is if they let somebody go, and that somebody kills somebody, the police are then responsible.

But martial arts training, especially if it is not aggressive, gives better reactions, and a variety of non-deadly force responses.

So, make the police learn something that will soften their approach, without softening their purpose to arrest bad guys.

And, as for Joe Citizen, maybe if he took a little martial arts he would end up with the self-respect and attitude that drains the bad out of bad guys.
